Browns-Chargers matchups
Saturday, November 4, 2006
4:15 p.m. Sunday
Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego
TV Channel 19
QUARTERBACKS
The players Browns safety Brian Russell says Philip Rivers can be "one of the great quarterbacks ... his arm strength might be second to none. He has the luxury of checking down to LaDainian Tomlinson, and he's doing that at all the right times." Rivers' yardage lead over Charlie Frye is a modest 1,536 to 1,329.
The edge Chargers ... Rivers ranks No. 4 in the league in passer rating. Frye needs a career game to give the Browns any kind of shot.
RUNNING BACKS
The players Sure, hindsight is 20-20, but the Browns are still sporting two leftover black eyes for picking Gerard Warren over LaDainian Tomlinson at No. 3 overall in 2005. With more than 8,000 rushing yards and 2,600 receiving yards in his career to go with 91 TDs in six seasons, L.T. would need to overdose on Kryptonite not to make the Hall of Fame.
The edge Chargers ... Reuben Droughns matches Tomlinson's intensity, but that's all. L.T. wrecked the Rams for 240 rushing-receiving yards last Sunday.
RECEIVERS
The players Midway through his fourth San Diego season, tight end Antonio Gates has 2,838 receiving yards, a 12.6 per-catch average and 29 TDs. After four years as a Charger, Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow had 3,341 yards, a 13.1 average and 27 TDs. Former undrafted free-agent Eric Parker and long-ago Brown Keenan McCardell, 36, are a decent wideout tandem.
The edge Chargers ... Kellen Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards need their best day together to offset an attack that features a team-high 35 catches by Tomlinson.
OFFENSIVE LINE
The players The Chargers have a functional no-name unit. RT Shane Olivea was a Round 7 pick out of Ohio State in 2004, taken just before the Browns got RT Jonathan Dunn, now out of the league. RG Mike Goff was with the Bengals when they were bad. Nick Hardwick, a former Purdue wrestler, is the center. LG Kris Dielmaan was an undrafted rookie out of Indiana in 2003. LT Marcus McNeill is a rookie Round 2 pick.
The edge Browns ... Cleveland's veteran group attacked the Jets as if to say, "All we needed was a little help from the boss."
DEFENSIVE LINE
The players End Igor Olshansky, one of the strongest brutes in the league, might be back. In his absence last week, replacement Jacques Cesaire stripped the ball from Rams RB Stephen Davis. Safety Marlin McCree picked it up and ran 79 yards. Left end Luis Castillo, a first-round pick last year, is playing well. The Browns really need end Orpheus Roye, who limped through the week on a sore hamstring.
The edge Chargers ... Browns nose man Ted Washington still gets the job done. Chargers nose man Jamal Williams gets the job demolished.
LINEBACKERS
The players It's a battle of 3-4 schemes. The Browns can make merry over the fact beastly Shawne Merriman - three sacks of Marc Bulger on Sunday - is beginning a four-game suspension. If injured Shaun Phillips can't play, the Chargers will be without two men who account for 141/2 of their 26 sacks. Browns first-rounder Kamerion Wimbley is emerging as one of the year's best draft bargains.
The edge Chargers ... What's stranger than two 33-year-old inside linebackers starting together? How about that Randall Godfrey and Donnie Edwards both were born on April 6, 1973.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
The players Browns cornerback Daven Holly was out of the Cleveland Clinic and back in uniform Friday, but he seemed a bit woozy from an undisclosed illness. If he can't start opposite rising star Leigh Bodden, undersized veteran Ralph Brown will. Chargers corner Quentin Jammer has underachieved as a former No. 5 overall pick but is having his best year.
The edge Browns ... Bodden and AFC Defensive Player of the Week Sean Jones give the Browns two upper-tier players.
SPECIAL TEAMS
The players Chargers punter Mike Scifres averages an amazing 43 net yards. Dave Zastudil might have those stats if he punted in Scifres' paradise. Phil Dawson doesn't get lots of field goal tries - he's 8-of-10. Nate Kaeding gets plenty and is 16-of-18.
The edge Browns ... Dennis Northcutt should be back to allow Joshua Cribbs to focus on kickoff returns.
STRATEGY
The coaches Cleveland is deep in Marty Schottenheimer's rear-view. He was 48-35 with the Browns during the 1980s and is 196-138-1 in his career, including 5-12 in the postseason. Cam Cameron, a former Bobby Knight-era basketball player at Indiana, coordinates the offense. Schottenheimer's sit-on-a-lead reputation reared its ugly head in a loss to AFC North leader Baltimore.
The edge Chargers ... This is Browns Offensive Coordinator Jeff Davidson's first serious test. Wade Phillips, in his 30th NFL season, has the Chargers' 3-4 front humming. STEVE DOERSCHUK

not to contest that... but it might be a function of having the most number of knockdowns in the NFL.. if I remember what the announcer said last week..BuckeyeMike80;653581; said:Now if only they could get Frye to NOT fumble into the end zone.... :(
BuckFanAtAkron;653584; said:time to get a new quarterback. He gets way too many turnovers. Why is it the defense plays there hearts out every week and the offense blows it for them. I would kind of like to see derek anderson in their. It is getting so hard to watch this team. I just say the famous words: wait tell next year.
