Giving breasts a squeeze could hinder cancer growth

BreatHealth.jpg

Women suffering from breast cancer may benefit from giving their breasts an extra squeeze ? literally.
According to researchers from the University of California at Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, placing mechanical force on malignant mammary cells can actually reverse their irregular growth process and put them back on track for a normal growth pattern.
?We are showing that tissue organization is sensitive to mechanical inputs from the environment at the beginning stages of growth and development,? said Daniel Fletcher, professor of bioengineering at Berkeley and faculty scientist at the Berkeley Lab, as well as the study?s lead investigator.
Breast tissue grows, shrinks and shifts throughout the course of a woman?s life in a structured pattern ? and ultimately stops growing at some point. Breast cancer is often characterized by a breakdown in this normal growth pattern, causing breast cancer cells to grow irregularly.

this would make me question the bra as a source of problems then.

if squeezing the titty can impact cancer cells, what does squeezing tits into a bra do for circulation of the lymph and what not.

the government should require all women to go topless their entire lives to help prevent breast cancer, because cancer is bad and the government is your only hope, and i want to see some tits.

Breast cancer survivor posts time-lapse video of treatment

When Emily Helck began treatment for breast cancer, she decided to document each day with photos. At the end of a year, Helck put the images together in an emotional time-lapse video.

The video, which starts in September 2012, and ends a year later, manages to be both heartbreaking and life-affirming. The inevitable physical changes that come with cancer treatment appear early. But through it all, Helck's bravery and openness remain a constant.

Helck told Yahoo News that she hopes the video makes the process less scary for others who may find themselves in a similar situation.

"A big part of the power that this disease has is that it makes people afraid. For me, the unknown is almost always worse than the reality. My hope is that by showing what it looks like to go through treatment, I can shine a light on a little bit of that unknown."

LOOK: Topless Serena Williams sings 'I Touch Myself' to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In her Instagram caption, Williams stressed the importance of self-checking

As it turns out, Serena Williams can sing too. Williams, who has made two straight Grand Slam final appearances but is still seeking her 24th major win, did something a little different to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A topless Williams sang the Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" to remind women to self-check for lumps.

'Three's Company' star Suzanne Somers opens up about regrowing her breast after cancer battle

SuzanneSomers1.jpg

Former “Three’s Company” star Suzanne Somers is opening up about her health issues and the unconventional method she used to regrow her breast after a battle with cancer.

The 71-year-old sitcom actress was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. In a recent interview with US Weekly, she discussed the alternative treatment she underwent in order to regenerate her breast after having a lumpectomy and undergoing radiation treatment. When it came time to consider reconstruction, the star became one of the first women in the United States to legally undergo cell-assisted lipotransfer.

“They took fat from my stomach, spun out the stem cells, discarded the weak ones, took the strong ones, injected them into this breast with, like, a turkey baster, and for a year I felt, like, electrical zippers growing the blood vessels,” Somers told the outlet.

The star revealed that she’s had a breast that is fully hers and not an implant or foreign object of some sort that’s designed to give the illusion of a second breast since 2012. She revealed that she was so pleased to have two breasts again that she may have gotten a little overzealous in showing them off.

“The first two weeks after I had it done, I was showing everybody. I’d whip it out — ‘cause I was so used to not having it,” she says. “And then after two weeks, my husband [Alan Hamel] said to me, ‘You gotta stop showing people your breast!’”.....

Interesting breast cancer survivor story, I didn't realize that medical procedures have advanced where women can basically "regrow" their breasts. I thought that the "stomach fat" proceedure just implanting stomach fat into the breast to fill the void from the lumpectomy, etc.

Well, it's the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and nobody else posted anything to "bump" the thread, so I will:

Oklahoma news anchor diagnosed with breast cancer after streaming first-ever mammogram on Facebook Live

ALi-Meyer-KFOR.jpg

An Oklahoma journalist who chose to air her first-ever mammogram on Facebook Live last year was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer, she said.

In October 2018, Ali Meyer, a reporter with Oklahoma’s News 4 (KFOR), chose to live-stream her mammogram “because I thought it might remind some women to schedule theirs,” she wrote in an essay posted to the news station’s website.

When the day of her appointment arrived, “I had no concerns,” Meyer, 41, wrote. “No lumps; no family history; no reason at all to think that my baseline mammogram would turn my world upside down.”

But to her shock and dismay, Meyer’s mammogram results were abnormal.

Local radiologist Dr. Richard Falk, with the University of Oklahoma’s Breast Health Network, found cancerous calcifications in the reporter’s right breast, she said. More specifically, she was told she had non-invasive ductal breast cancer.

“I will never forget that day. I will never forget telling my husband, my girls,” she wrote.

One day after her diagnosis, Meyer took to Facebook Live to share the news.

“This has been hard and shocking. It does rock you to your core,” she said, according to KFOR. “You guys have been really supportive and I appreciate it so much. This is not the news I was hoping to tell you about to raise breast cancer awareness.”

Meyer, who was only 40 at the time of her diagnosis, did not have any genetic mutations that could explain why she developed breast cancer at such a young age.

Meyer later underwent a right side, skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy.

“Even though [the] surgery was my choice, it felt like forced mutilation,” she wrote in the essay. “It felt like cancer was stealing part of my body away from me.”

Luckily, because of how early her breast cancer was detected, Meyer’s prognosis was good.

"We found this when it was not invasive and not a mass when you are most likely to be completely cured and go on with a normal life," Falk told Meyer for the essay.

Meyer’s surgery was a success. Now one year later, she is cancer-free.

"I will never stop having mammograms,” she wrote. “I will never stop telling women to take care of their bodies and schedule their mammograms."

"This year I had my second, annual, 3D screening mammogram,” she continued. “I am thrilled and relieved to tell you my mammogram was clear, showing no signs of breast cancer.”
