  • Our old pals Siena and Butler are going at it today. The Saints lead by 3 at halftime, 31-28.

I like these games, scheduled just a couple weeks ago, between mid-major conference teams. You get to see some good players you usually don't see, and you get an idea of relative strength of these schools, several of whom will make the tournament.

Kent State and Akron are participating in the festivities today, too, on the ESPN channels.

There are very few of these games that look interesting. Most of them are with two teams that aren't going to make the NCAA tourney. I like to watch college basketball about as much as anybody, but this is a pretty weak looking group of games. I am kind of interested in seeing Luke Babbitt play again, but that's about the only thing other than the Siena-Butler game that interested me at all.

Yeah, the overall slate isn't as good as prior years. Northern Iowa-Old Dominion was one of the better ones but they played it last night. College of Charleston versus George Mason looks pretty good, too.

    EDIT: Charleston beat Mason, 85-83.

The 10th place team in the MAC defeated the 2nd place team in the Horizon.

    Ohio 64
    Wright State 59

Decent day for the MAC, going 7-4 in Buster games this weekend.

One month later, Ohio won the MAC tournament then knocked Georgetown out of the NCAA tourney, 97-83. I guess they were trying to tell us something when they knocked off Wright.

Wright State is playing Hofstra right now in this year's BB. I'm curious why the Raiders have a dog for a logo.

Some decent match ups this year. Kent State lost at Drexel last night, 73-66.

Missouri State plays at Valparaiso today (Dookie V is doing that one, so it might be unwatchable). Utah State plays at St. Mary's tonight. Cleveland State plays at Old Dominion tomorrow.

In what I think is the best pairing, George Mason plays at Northern Iowa - both of them have pulled off shockers in March Madness in the recent past. Both have looked good this season.

It's supposed to be a wolf. They changed because the old viking-ish logo was too much of a cartoon/caricature. I don't know why that precluded them from doing a more contemporary version of the old mascot, but whatever.

I've caught Wright State a couple times this year. They're going to have to win the conference tourney to make the big dance, but they might just be able to do it.

Brad Brownell (now at Clemson) did a great job picking up the pieces after the Biancardi fiasco. Hopefully Donlon can keep the momentum up.

    Valpo 80
    Missouri State 67

This one surprised me, even though Valpo was home. They're getting better at the right time but MSU has been solid all year and got smoked.

    Utah State 71
    Saint Mary's 59

SMC had won the last 2 years and looked on their way to doing it again up by 9 at halftime and playing at home. USU dominated the second half. Pretty impressive win.

George Mason has the longest winning streak going in college hoops - yes, George Mason - and they kept it going winning a tough road game, 77-71.

I thought the CAA looked good except for Hofstra. The MAC didn't look so hot. The Horizon looked pretty good with Wright State, Valpo and Butler winning.

I'd like to see Cleveland State-ODU but they're playing the same time as OSU. I think ODU takes care of the Vikings.

It's that time of year again as this year's slate was announced and the marquee match up looks like undefeated Murray State hosting 21-2 Saint Mary's. Long Beach State visiting 21-2 Creighton is a pretty good one as well.

There has been an eventual Final Four team emerge from the pack of Bracket Buster winners the last two seasons (Butler, VCU) so it will be interesting to get a sense of which of these mid-majors is stronger than the others this year.

Effing ESPN... screwing the Bobcats with the non-TV/TV matchup... really... ESPN3??? That AINT TV!!!

Ohio deserved a better matchup and a TV spot and got neither. Now we play a team with a much lower RPI that isn't going to help Ohio have a chance at an at-large berth.

    Fuck ESPN!!!

Yeah, I hate that ESPN3 shit. Seems like they should get them all on TV if they're going to do it, instead of leaving two out of it.

Friday, Feb. 17 (all times ET)
    7 p.m. ? Northern Iowa at VCU (ESPN2)
9 p.m. ? Valparaiso at Loyola Marymount (ESPNU)

    Saturday, Feb. 18
11 a.m. ? Drexel at Cleveland State (ESPNU)
Noon ? Wichita State at Davidson (ESPN or ESPN2)
1 p.m. ? Buffalo at South Dakota State (ESPNU)
2 p.m. ? Akron at Oral Roberts (ESPN or ESPN2)
3 p.m. ? Drake at New Mexico State (ESPNU)
    4 p.m. ? Nevada at Iona (ESPN or ESPN2)
5 p.m. ? Old Dominion at Missouri State (ESPNU)
    6 p.m. ? Saint Mary?s at Murray State (ESPN or ESPN2)
    7 p.m. ? UNC Asheville at Ohio (ESPN3)
    8 p.m. ? UT-Arlington at Weber State (ESPN3)
    10 p.m. ? Long Beach State at Creighton (ESPN2)

I hope Murray State is still unbeaten going into that one.
