Just curious about you ranking Penn State higher than Iowa....given that Iowa are undefeated and beat Penn State at Happy Valley.

  1. Alabama - I know Tennessee has a good defense, but shouldn't the supposed #1 team in the country at least be able to put up around as many points as the Ohio Bobcats did against them?

  4. USC - It's getting tougher to justify this ranking with the way their opponents have been able to keep it close or make it close the last two weeks in games they should've won comfortably. Still, they are getting the job done.
  5. Iowa - Speaking of getting the job done... This team has almost had its season ruined a few times now, and somehow they manage to get through. I can't say that I think it'll last for them, but I have to give them credit for doing what they've done so far.
  6. Texas Christian - Bumped them up past Cincinnati. Their wins over Clemson & BYU ****> UC's win over Oregon State and whoever else you'd care to argue might somehow constitute a significant win for the Bearcats. TCU has been known for it's defense, but lately they're showing they can score too, which makes them a dangerous team.

  8. Georgia Tech - Their run game is filthy right now. Some head coach is going to crap their pants when they find out this is the team the drew for their bowl game.

  12. Oregon - They are really growing into the team many of us thought they'd be before the season started. The quality of play has been there, but the ghosts of that stinker against Boise State still linger - that and USC's ability to ALWAYS win the PAC-10 are the only things keeping me from ranking them ahead of the Trojans and calling them the favorite to go to the Rose Bowl.
  13. Oklahoma State - Since losing to Houston, the Pokes have quietly piled up a series of very average wins. When you're playing outside of the top end of the poll where style really counts, doing what Oklahoma State has done is enough to merit a halfway decent ranking. They still haven't got into the meat of the Big 12 South schedule though, and I don't think they'll be able to hold this position.
  14. Ohio State - Maybe jumping them up a few spots was a bit premature. Maybe the fact that it was only Minnesota really does matter. Maybe I'm a shameless homer. Or maybe Good Pryor just arrived for good and the Buckeyes are eve better than this ranking. We'll see. The nice thing about a ranking that might be a bit dubious is that you get more information over the next week, and you get to do it all over again. If they continue to look good, I'll continue to move them up. If it was a fluke and they stink again - back down they go.
  15. Utah - The record is there, but right now their best win is their loss to Oregon. BYU & TCU loom.
  16. Miami (FL) - They've shown that the talent is there, but they've also now shown that they're prone to many of the same ups & downs that plague any other young team.
  17. Oklahoma - They won their game in a blowout and get bumped down a bit on my ballot. Such is life when you lose three games.

  25. Notre Dame - I had to hold my nose for this one (again). They could easily be 1-6, with anonymous passive-aggressive billboards being posted all over Northern Indiana by disgruntled alumni. Somehow they've put themselves in a position for a BCS bid though. What can I say? In the land of hapless college football teams the one that manages to pull a 5-2 record out of its (front)butt is king, FWIW.

Notre Dame doesn't make the cut this week...too many close wins over inferior teams. Central Michigan can prove they belong by winning at BC this week.
