Has anyone else here ever taken boxing classes? I've been doing them for about a week now and it has kicked my ass. The classes are easily the hardest workouts i've had in 2 years, loseing 4 pounds (water) per a session.
Not to mention the fact that there are girls i the class that come after an hour of sparring can probably take me out, I recommend it to anyone.

I boxed as an amateur in college and for a short while afterwards. It takes three to six months of consistent training to be able to go THREE rounds with another amateur. When you start - you find quickly that most people cannot jump rope for three minutes, or work the heavy bag continuously for more than 90 seconds. Even in my peak boxing shape, I still could not understand how the pros can go 12 rounds. These are the best conditioned athletes in the world.

One thing I will caution about boxing "classes." Is this like in a group at a gym, or is this real boxing w a trainer, because there is a significant difference. In the class, you get to do most of the cardio and solo offensive work, but you do miss out on the best and most rewarding workout of all - sparring. You could work the mitts or bag for months, but there is no substitute for going against a live opponent. You do ultimately get used to getting hit - but you never forget the first time it happens to you. The workout is better too - its one thing to be throwing punches for three minutes, its another to do so while your stomach is flexed the entire time and someone is pummeling you.

As a side note - once you start boxing competitively, you being to laugh at how funny most bar/street fights are. Not only does everything seem like its in slow motion, but some of the things the guys will do is beyond stupid. Its like when someone plays a musical instrument, and they see an actor on TV pretending to play the same instrument - you can tell that the person has no idea what they are doing. Fighting is exactly the same - except funnier.....

One of the best workouts I've gotten is from cardio kickboxing lessons.

About four years ago, before I started doing triathlon training, I was taking cardio kickboxing taught by the wife of Dennis Alexio (former world heavyweight kickboxing champ). I was nearly always the only guy in the class. The workouts would wear you out, because Lei (Mrs Alexio) has stamina to burn and would get full throttle the whole workout. And it had more actual boxing and kickboxing moves than the usual classes. I remember a couple of the big local boys coming in for the start of a class one time with arrogant smirks on their faces, like "This ain't shit". Fuckers lasted all of five minutes before they drug their asses out of class and back down to the weight racks. :slappy:

What was funny was I had my best weight training workouts immediately after the kickboxing class. A couple of fairly scantily clad Asian girls bouncing around the room for an hour also helped ensure my heart rate (and something else) remained elevated.
