The Buckeyes land their first transfer commitment of the offseason with a plug and play offensive tackle.

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for the Ohio State football program. From transfer portal recruiting to the split of the fanbase in support of this coaching staff or not, the Buckeyes are the continued talk of the town. This Saturday’s College Football Playoff game with Tennessee is only fueling matters all over social media.

Keeping the main thing the main thing, the Buckeyes are preparing to take on an SEC opponent in the Shoe for the first ever post-season game at Ohio Stadium, and that’s what matters more than anything. Forgetting everything else and focusing on this game is all the staff and players are doing, and Saturday they’ll have their chance to not only quiet the doubters, but more importantly keep their ultimate goal still alive.

In just over 48 hours, the country will see if Ohio State can right the ship and look like the team they were thought to be since the beginning of the season. The countdown has been on.

BOOM! Ohio State lands much-needed OL portal commit

Ohio State is desperate need to add offensive lineman via the transfer portal for the 2025 season. A position group that is under scrutiny more times than not, the Buckeyes and position coach Justin Frye have the portal as their way to solve the issues of not only depth, but also talent considering the recruiting misses the last few cycles.

The first two weeks of the portal window being open saw Ohio State linked to several offensive line transfer targets, but nothing had come of it. Regardless of reason, the staff saw guys head elsewhere, and of course worry started to rise from the fanbase considering how important this position is to the team’s future success.

Still swinging, yesterday the Buckeyes received great news as they finally received the first of what should be multiple commitments along the unit. Ohio native and Minnesota transfer Phillip Daniels signed with Ohio State on Wednesday, giving the Buckeyes a sigh of relief and what hopefully is the first of more to come.

An obvious fit when you look at his background, Daniels is the cousin to former Buckeye Paris Johnson Jr., and is a Cincinnati product the staff already knew from his high school recruiting process. Following his two-day visit to Columbus, nothing more was needed to be seen, and he is now officially a Buckeye.

Seeing time this past season for the Golden Gophers, Daniels is a clear option to start immediately at right tackle in 2025, and at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds he fits the mold of what you’d expect to see this program having out there leading the way. The No. 38 player in the portal and the fourth-best offensive tackle per the 247Sports rankings, the job is far from finished for Ohio State, but this first addition is much needed and is a big win for the unit that needs to stack positive momentum this offseason.

Quick Hits

  • Keeping with the theme of transfer portal offensive line targets, Ohio State continues to host multiple players at the position even this week. Per Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts, one recent visit was “a pleasure” for another guy the staff seems to be zeroing in on this first portal window.

The No. 92 player in the portal rankings and the tenth-best offensive tackle per 247Sports, Rahtrel Perry is another visitor in the long line of guys Ohio State is trying to sway towards Columbus. A 6-foot-7, 323 pound athlete, Perry leaving Central Connecticut State goes to show that the smaller schools are also no stranger to producing big-time players who may have been looked over during their original recruitment.

Sure to be new names coming, this is the latest name worth paying attention to when it comes to the Buckeyes and their pursuit of offensive linemen.
