Blade Servers, Storage Area Networks and VMWare esx

Greatest things ever to come to computing. Just thought I would let you all know.

Agreed. We have migrated over to all 3.

The only issue we've had is that our 30 blade racks put off so much heat. We've had to install two additional AC's in our data room.

How many VM hosts are you running?

10 Dell 1955's hosting 21 Servers at the moment, ESX Console says I am at about 30% capacity, with SQL and Exchange running. I am just blown away with how nice this is. We're going to be moving the entire infrastructure to Oregon in a couple months and colocating the environment.

... only until you fry a backplane or blow-up the only part that didn't have a redundant alternative, and you lose everything all at once. :tongue2:

I've got an HP EVA5000 2C12D with 128 fiber drives in it. I like it for snapcloning disk images off of our most mission-critical commodity servers, but I don't think I'd want to run day-to-day operations on it live.

Actually, we just picked up another set of 1955's off of ebay for 8 grand and another pair of CX 500's for 1700, if they work we'll set a goal of placing them in a second colo, and mirroring, tho I doubt my boss is going to want to shell out of the ESX licening again, if not, then it's all spare parts and what-not, either way, my major concern with the whole unit is the chassis, if it fails I am fucked, but otherwise, everything is redundant.

I do know what you mean though, in one weekend I had a raid adapter fail on my backup to disc server, and 2 drives fail in a raid 5 environment on my exchange server. My boss looked at me "So, when's the last time you actually plugged in a tape?" I looked at him and said "You know, we archive everything that comes in and out for 7 years, I am going to see if I can write a script to push that mail back in"

Worst 3 day weekend ever.
