  • The Buckeye baseball team heads for Port Charlotte, Florida this weekend for 3 games against 3 Big East teams in the annual Big Ten/Big East Challenge.

    Friday, Feb 26th - South Florida 4:30 PM
    Saturday, Feb 27th - Notre Dame 4:00 PM
    Sunday, Feb 28th - Cincinnati 1:00 PM

    South Florida Bulls Official Baseball site

    The Bulls were picked to finish 2nd in the Big East this year by the conference coaches (link), trailing only Louisville. Last year, USF was 1st all year until the last weekend of the season and finished 1/2 game behind the Cardinals. They may prove to be a good opponent this early in the season. The were swept by the 7th ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville to open their season (link). The South Florida will also take on Illinois and Michigan in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge.

    Notre Dame Fighting Irish Official Baseball Site

    The Irish are picked to finish 5th in the Big East in 2010, but started off in fine fashion with a three game sweep of Mississippi Valley State in Greenville, MS over the weekend (link). Notre Dame will play Illinois and Penn State in the challenge.

    The Bearcats opened their 2010 season winning 1 of 3 games vs Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Florida (link). They are picked to finish 7th in the Big East by the coaches. UC will also play Penn State and Purdue.

    Buckeyes come from behind to defeat South Florida 4-2

    ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - No. 13 Ohio State picked up a 4-2 comeback victory over South Florida behind a strong performance by ace Alex Wimmers Friday evening in St. Petersburg. Wimmers went eight innings, giving up five hits, one earned run and punching out six. Ryan Dew led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one being the go-ahead tally.
    The Buckeyes faced their first deficit of the young season after Ryan Lockwood led off the first with a single, stole second and scored after Junior singled and advanced to second on an error by third baseman Brad Hallberg. Carlin advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on a ground ball to make the score 2-0 before the Buckeyes came up to bat.
    Ohio State answered back in the bottom of the second and cut the lead in half when Brian DeLucia doubled home Dew with two down in the inning.

    CLEARWATER, Fla. - No. 13 Ohio State moved to 5-0 on the season with a 10-2 win over Notre Dame Saturday evening in Clearwater.

    Right-hander Dean Wolosiansky picked up the win, going six innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs while fanning three. Michael Stephens was the star at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of runs scored.

    The Buckeyes jumped out to the early 2-0 lead, taking advantage of a pair of Notre Dame errors in the top of the second.

    After Notre Dame starter Brian Dupra got a quick first two outs in the third, the Buckeyes used back-to-back doubles by

    Stephens and Ryan Dew and an RBI single by Brad Hallberg to push the lead to 5-0 after three innings.

    Ohio State tacked on three more in the fourth to make it 8-0. After Matt Streng and Tyler Engle singled to lead off the inning, they were both driven in on Cory Kovanda's triple to right-center. Kovanda was then driven in on a two-out double by Stephens.

    The Fighting Irish plated two in the bottom of the fifth and the Buckeyes added one in both the seventh and eighth innings to round out the scoring.

    The Buckeyes (5-0) will close out the weekend Sunday in St. Petersburg against Cincinnati. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
