The matchups are

Monday Nov. 28th

Va Tech @ tOSU - Edge tOSU(Homecourt, and we are the better team)

Tuesday Nov. 29th

Clemson @ PSU - Edge Clemson(don't know anything about these teams, but PSU isnt suppossed to be very good)

Purdue @ FSU - Edge FSU(Purdue isnt a very strong team and it is at FSU)

Miami @ scUM - Edge scUM(at home and they have a couple decent players)

Ill @ UNC - Edge UNC(really looking forward to this matchup, UNC and ILL lost a lot, but they both have talent, I think being in the Dean Dome is the edge here.)

Wisky @ Wake - Edge Wake(they have more talent and at home, but never count out the Badgers with Ryan as the coach. they have Tucker back and this could be a ugly game and the Badgers could pull it out.)

Wednesday Nov. 30th

Duke @ Indiana - Edge Duke(could be closer than people think)

Geogia Tech @ MSU - Edge MSU(at home in IZZO country, I think they will be ready to play at home)

NC. St @ Iowa - Edge Iowa(this will be a 10-15 pt. game)

NWU @ UVA - Edge NW(I know Parker made the jump to the pros, but they still have some taletn and I don't think UVA has much at all)

Minny @ Maryland - Edge Maryland(with Greer out this should be lopsided.)

The only team left out is BC, they play MSU on Dec. 5th so they will get beat by a big ten team anyways.

Right now I have us down 5-6. We shall see how it plays out. I would really like to see us win this thing for once. Give our conference a little respect.

Ill @ UNC - Edge UNC
Wisky @ Wake - Edge Wake
a couple vbets?

Duke @ Indiana - Edge Duke(could be closer than people think)
even without white and ratliff, i may still take indiana -- with points, of course. however, if indiana had white and ratliff, i would definitely take indiana (with points), as well as some on indiana for an upset. i'll be surprised if indiana and michigan state don't make it far in the tourney this year. i see indiana battling michigan state for big ten supremacy, with illinois and ohio state battling for third.

edit: oops. i forgot about iowa. it's easy to do in football, but i shouldn't forget them in basketball this year. i haven't seen them yet, but i've read only good things.

6-5 I like Illinois at UNC. Call me crazy.

Monday Nov. 28th

Va Tech @ tOSU - Edge tOSU - We are more talented and have the game home

Tuesday Nov. 29th

Clemson @ PSU - Edge Clemson - PSU isn't that good and Clemson has won their first few games very handily

Purdue @ FSU - Edge FSU - Purdue has been so bad lately I can't see them winning

Miami @ scUM - Edge scUM - I give them the edge because of being at home...neither team impresses me that much

Ill @ UNC - Edge Ill - Tough pick. Both teams lost players, but UNC lost a lot more. Both teams have started out on the right foot as well. Although UNC is at home, I'll give Weber the benefit of the doubt this time.

Wisky @ Wake - Edge Wake - Wake is at home and has a lot of seniority. Wisky could pull this one out just as Illinois could lose, but in order to balance the picks I go with Wake here.

Wednesday Nov. 30th

Duke @ Indiana - Edge Duke - I say a close game though. Duke has two guys giving them 40 points a game. If Indy could find a way to slow one of them down, watch out.

Georgia Tech @ MSU - Edge MSU - GT is a very young team and I think the road game in a very tough arena to play in will be too much for them to handle.

NC. St @ Iowa - Edge Iowa - Iowa is that good, period

NWU @ UVA - Edge UVA - Northwestern has relied on one player to get them big points this year. Although I don't think UVA is that great, I think they hand it to NW in a close game.

Minny @ Maryland - Edge Maryland - No Greer=No Minny

I have the Big Ten going 5-6. This is right where I figured I would end up. I really hope the Big Ten can win it for once because we look bad every year after this event.

Seventh try should be a charm for 0-6 Big Ten

Six years later, Jim Delany still doesn't know what the Commissioner's Cup looks like.
"I've never seen it," he says.
See, the Commissioner's Cup goes to the winner of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, and Delany's league, the Big Ten, has never won it. Six up, six down.

img9066732.jpg
BC coach Al Skinner's No. 10 Eagles will be the only ACC team not playing in the challenge. (AP) Delany doesn't know where he would put the Commissioner's Cup when the Big Ten finally does win the thing, but he had better start making plans. The Big Ten is going to win this year.
The Challenge begins Monday night with a single game, Virginia Tech at Ohio State, and then accelerates with five games each on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Why do we say the Big Ten will win? Check the details. The Big Ten is the home team in six games, the ACC five. And while every Big Ten team will play, one team from the 12-member ACC cannot. And that one team is No. 10 Boston College.
Those are important details, but really, it's simpler than that. The Big Ten is up. The ACC is down. And the gap between the two has never been all that big in the first place.
Overall the ACC has a 34-19 edge in Challenge games, a whopper of a margin that hasn't been reflected in the NCAA Tournament. In the six years since the Challenge began, ACC teams have gone 59-25 (.702) in the NCAA Tournament, while the Big Ten has been right behind at 57-30 (.655). The ACC has had seven Final Four teams, the Big Ten six. The ACC has a 3-1 edge in national championships thanks to North Carolina's last-minute victory over Illinois in the 2005 title game.
"These conferences are one or two in college basketball, if you look at the history over the last several decades," Delany says. "If you measure it by number of teams in the (NCAA) Tournament, number of national championships, number of No. 1 seeds, Final Four teams ... these conferences are one or two."
But there can only be one No. 1. This year, it's the Big Ten's turn.
Here's how we see it unfolding, by a final tally of 7-to-4:
 Monday's game

Virginia Tech at Ohio State: If the Hokies couldn't beat Bowling Green at home, they can't win at Ohio State. Winner: Ohio State.
 Tuesday's games

Wisconsin at Wake Forest: The Badgers won the Paradise Jam, but they haven't faced the kind of competition Wake Forest saw in New York. Then again, Wake Forest didn't look all that good against that competition, and the Deacons' point guard situation remains in flux. Winner: Wisconsin.
Purdue at Florida State: Under the best of circumstances, the Boilermakers would have a shot. On the road, and without its projected starting backcourt of David Teague (knee) and Tarrance Crump (suspension), these aren't the best of circumstances. Winner: Florida State.
Clemson at Penn State: Both teams are undefeated, though neither has played anyone of note. Since Penn State is at home, we're tempted to add to the Big Ten's win total, but the home court is the only thing Penn State has going for it. Winner: Clemson.
Illinois at North Carolina: Because of North Carolina's awful interior depth, UNC freshman center Tyler Hansbrough hasn't competed against anyone as good as Illinois' James Augustine since the McDonald's All-American game. Hansbrough is in for a shock, as is Illinois native Bobby Frasor, the UNC freshman starting at point guard opposite Illini force of nature Dee Brown. Winner: Illinois.
Miami at Michigan: With point guard Anthony Harris, Miami could win this game in Miami. Unless Harris (foot fracture) returns more quickly than anticipated, and returns without any rust, the Hurricanes have no business winning it on the road. Winner: Michigan.
 Wednesday's games

Georgia Tech at Michigan State: The Jackets are painfully young, and this is their first road game of the season. Expect a blowout. Winner: Michigan State.
Minnesota at Maryland: The Gophers will be playing without star wing Vincent Grier (broken finger). Expect another blowout. Winner: Maryland.
Northwestern at Virginia: The Cavaliers have no one who can stop Northwestern's Vedran Vukusic, a 6-foot-8, 245-pound forward averaging 25 points per game. Winner: Northwestern.
Duke at Indiana: This ought to be the best game of the bunch. If Indiana's Marco Killingsworth can neutralize Shelden Williams, and if Marshall Strickland can stay hot from the perimeter ... nah, Duke's still going to win. But it should be a good game. Winner: Duke.
North Carolina State at Iowa: This is a great matchup of two deep, balanced teams. Cedric Simmons vs. Greg Brunner will be worth the price of admission. Most of those tickets will be purchased by Iowa fans, seeing as how this game is in Iowa City. Home team wins a close one. Winner: Iowa.

Miami, Indiana have most at stake

Miami might need a road win more than any other ACC team heading into the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Canes are reeling a bit after getting worked over by Temple on Sunday in Philadelphia, and point guard Anthony Harris is still out with a broken foot, meaning the point guard by committee will have to be in effect against Michigan on Tuesday night.

"There's no question we need one, we need one bad," Miami coach Frank Haith said of a road win. The Canes also lost to Air Force two weeks ago in the BCA Invitational in Seattle, missing out on a chance to face Washington in the final.

Haith said Temple dictated the entire game, and he wasn't pleased with the Canes' effort, either. Guillermo Diaz, Miami's top scorer from a year ago, was 1-for-10 against the Owls. Diaz is averaging 14.7 points per game through the first six games. He averaged 18.0 a game last season.

"And only one of his shots was contested," Haith said. Haith said Diaz was trying to do too much, going back to take the ball from Denis Clemente at the point, and that was affecting his shot. Trying to guard Temple's Mardy Collins and Mark Tyndale also was an issue.

"We miss Harris' toughness," Haith said. The hope is that Harris will return in time for the Wofford home game on Dec. 10, or at the very least for the ACC opener at NC State on Dec. 18 before a date with Florida on Dec. 22.

So, if Miami is the team that needs a road win the most in this event, who needs the home win?

Indiana.

If the Hoosiers can beat Duke on Wednesday night (and they can), the team should stamp itself as a Big Ten and national player. Indiana would be claiming a win without its top returning forward, D.J. White.

Although Mike Davis has some big wins, Indiana also has had its share of near-misses under him. Last year in this event, the Hoosiers couldn't nab North Carolina, even with a terrific home-court atmosphere.

This game should show Assembly Hall at its finest. There is a pep rally planned for before tipoff, and any time Duke is in town, it's going to be a lively affair. Throw in the Devils' No. 1 ranking and the arrival of Duke freshman and Indiana native Josh McRoberts and the Hoosiers have every reason to make this an event.

Auburn transfer Marco Killingsworth has been waiting for this kind of big-time game since he transferred to IU. The Hoosiers should have the return of injured guard A.J. Ratliff (thumb) to give them depth at every position save Killingsworth's (without White). If this game lives up to its hype, it could be one of the most memorable for the season.

Here are some other things to look for the next two days:

Coming-out party:
Likely for North Carolina. The nation hasn't had a chance to see the new-look, youthful Tar Heels. A win over Illinois and Dee Brown would do wonders for their confidence and the team's national profile. There will be plenty of national TV games this season, but first impressions are everything and UNC has a great shot to make a lasting mark on the season with a win over the Illini.

Best game receiving little hype?
NC State at Iowa. The Wolfpack beat Notre Dame rather handily Saturday, and Iowa is coming off a win over Kentucky and a near miss against Texas last week in Kansas City. Neither team's style of play is too attractive, but both are gritty and tough and should be NCAA teams come March.

Trouble for Georgia Tech?
The Yellow Jackets are reeling after getting blown out at home by Illinois-Chicago. So, as a reward, they get to go to Michigan State, where the Spartans are finally getting their sea legs after an exhausting trip to Hawaii that included a loss to the Warriors, a triple-overtime loss to Gonzaga and an overtime win over Arizona. This could be too much for the green Jackets.

False read on Minnesota?
If Vincent Grier were healthy instead of nursing a broken bone in his hand, the Gophers would be on full display at Maryland on Wednesday. Instead, Minnesota is at a serious disadvantage going into this game without one of its better scorers. Mo Hargrow is off to a solid start, but the Terps' pressure could be the story of the night.

Why no Boston College?
The Eagles were the last team to join the ACC, thus making it an easy decision to keep BC out of the Challenge this season. BC will still face a Big Ten challenge, though -- in the headline game of the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 6 in New York. The Eagles will play Big Ten favorite Michigan State at Madison Square Garden.

Who will be left out next season?
According to ESPN programming folks, this hasn't been decided yet.

What's the best potential matchup in 2006?
Never too early to look ahead to what could be a compelling Ohio State vs. North Carolina game. This would pit the top two recruiting classes against each other.

Man that would be awesome. Hopefully it could be on a neutral court no giving anyone an advantage.

The hype for that game would be huge.

Pretty pumped for day two of the challenge. I think Wisky and Illinois can take care of Wake/UNC. That would make three very visible wins for the big ten. I think Purdue will probably lose to FSU, and I have no idea about Miami/Michigan. Felt the need to honor the turning of the tide with a sig :)

edit: it's a good thing I don't get ESPN U, or at 8 pm I'd have to watch Wisky/Wake, Purdue/FSU, & Clemson/PSU all at once :)
