Watson, Crick & A Twist
For Bengal fans this was a game with small flashes of strong play from 2nd year RB Chris Perry, poor passing from Palmer and the kicking game making the most consistent showing -- in the form of 2 ex-Hokie driven FG's. Rookie Odell Thurman looked alternately strong running sideline to sideline and somewhat at sea stuffing a run right into his space. Perhaps the run-D Marvin Lewis was so keen to see improvement upon will come into being when hold-out 1st rounder LB David Polack joins the fold. Thurman had the team high of 7 tackles, all solo. Clearly the Patriots were running to his side.
Brady was not running the Patriots Offense, ex-LSU QB Rohan Davey was given the early work-out.
For those neutral observers wanting to see ex-sCUM players lose and ex-OSU players prosper this was still a mixed bag of a game. Perry was the brightest Bengal spot, and Krenzel ended up with the lowest passer rating of the 4 Bengal QB's - best was Casey Bramlet. Krenzel was playing very late in the 4th quarter (2:33 left) , so its hard to tell how much could be learned by the staff from putting him in that late and with an insurmountable task facing him.
Vrabel was his usual steady presence on Patriots D and newly acquired ex-Steeler ex-tOSU Rodney Bailey played like a man in the early going. Childress got a few chances to strut his stuff, his best showing coming later in the game. He ended up netting the 2nd highest yards of any Patriots receiver, with a total of 39 yards on 3 catches. The first two throws going his way ended incomplete and with an interception (forced by the Bengal rush on Davey - not Childress' doing). Third toss to Bam he was flagged for a Motion penalty. When ex-USC pine-rider Cassel subbed for Davey things didn't improve.
Bam started out the 2nd half in better shape, pretty decent run back to the 28 yard line. He netted all his yards on service from Cassel in the 2nd half, including a team long of the day catch for 23 yards on 3rd down.
Here is the Bengal.com summary of the game and how far "Dey" have still to go.
