Baseball America Pre-Season Poll

While I see no reason to presume it an impossibility to not continue our long standing tradition of losing to Miami in the Super-Regionals - we have a very deep bullpen, and a deep pen and great defense is really the whole college baseball deal. Two quality starters and great depth for an unfortunate dip into the losers' bracket is essential. Most teams cannot climb out of the loser's bracket once they use up their arms in a long extra inning loss. Back in the LSU "gorilla ball" days with too-hot manufactured bats powered by creatine enriched hitters you might score your way out of a problem. Now you have to have depth or get really, really lucky by having a bunch of low pitch count victories in a row. In 05 UF fought out of the loser's bracket to the finals, but it was over before it started, as we had no juice left at all. (plus, we faced a better ball club...but it is fair to say that our slight chance was over before it started).

The one thing we DO have is a great coach. Hiring Sully from Vanderbilt was another Foley genius move. The Baseball America eval of our club states:

Experience/Intangibles: 70. The coaching staff has quickly developed a reputation for excelling at teaching the game and getting the most out of its players.

This means that we will always be able to recruit well and attract the talent that you need to make a run. This goes back to having a guy like Tress in charge of your football program. Coaching is everything. When a coach finally goes, you can go from the top of the mountain to also ran in just a couple of years. I hope Tress stays for ten more, and that Sully retires in 2030.
