Note to College football teams: Keep Matthew McConaughey off the sidelines. First texas, Now Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -Central Florida spoiled Marshall's emotional night that included Matthew McConaughey roaming the Thundering Herd sidelines.

The Golden Knights , who ended a 17-game losing streak last season with a home win over Marshall, got a 22-yard field goal from Michael Torres with 6.7 seconds left for a 23-22 victory Wednesday.

Anthony Binswanger gave Marshall a 22-20 lead with a 50-yard field goal with 3 minutes left, but Torres made the last of three 22-yarders to make for a poor start to the season in which he missed three of four previous tries.

''Happy to see a kicker whom we had a lot of trouble with make that last kick,'' Central Florida coach George O'Leary said.

McConaughey is starring in the upcoming film ''We Are Marshall'' on the aftermath of a 1970 plane crash that killed 75 people, including most of the Marshall football team.

He led the current team on a walk to the stadium before the game and roamed the sidelines during the contest.

A 4-minute scene from the film, scheduled to be released Dec. 22, was shown at halftime as cameras flashed throughout the stadium.

But the energy didn't seem to help Marshall's offense much.

UCF's Kevin Smith rushed for a season-high 166 yards before bruising his ribs late in the third quarter. He didn't return. Jason Peters ran for 108 yards for the Golden Knights (2-3, 1-1 Conference USA).

UCF outgained Marshall 488 yards to 366, but the Golden Knights were kept out of the end zone on four trips inside the Thundering Herd 20.

''I thought we ran the ball well but I didn't see that many points up on the board. I thought someone up there had an eraser,'' O'Leary said. ''We moved the ball great from 20 to 20. But give Marshall credit for stopping us in the red zone.''

Marshall (1-4, 0-1) couldn't take advantage of the 181-yard rushing effort of Ahmad Bradshaw and the excitement surrounding McConaughey's appearance.

''This is a hard one to swallow,'' Marshall coach Mark Snyder said. ''They just made one more play than we did. I knew it was going to be a barn burner.''

Smith's 34-yard run set up Steven Moffett 's 28-yard TD pass to Mike Walker to give UCF a 20-9 lead early in the third quarter.

Bradshaw answered a minute later with a 32-yard TD run and Binswanger kicked a 26-yard field goal with 10 minutes left in the game.

After Binswanger's 50-yarder, UCF got the ball back at its 19-yard line.

''With two timeouts, it seemed like an eternity left,'' O'Leary said.

Moffett, who sat out most of the first half, completed four straight passes to move the Golden Knights to the Marshall 17 with 50 seconds remaining. Among the completions was a 12-yarder to Mike Merritt on fourth down.

''We had it defended. That's what makes it such a heartbreaker,'' Snyder said. ''He scrambles back across the field and the coverage got skewed and he found a guy open. On fourth down, you have to do your job.''

Peters then ran 14 yards to the Marshall 3, setting up Torres' winning kick.

Moffett finished 13-of-19 for 165 yards.

Texas has no business having him on the sideline. A program like Marshall probably needs that kind of exposure (w/ the movie). Personally, I think he should have been down with the press and interviewed if absolutely necessary... not in the middle of the coaches/players.

at least it's not as stoopid as USC having Snoop on their sideline. DOes that idiot even know what a college campus looks like?

Ashley Judd on the other hand...she can be in my huddle any day of the week.
