Week 8 is in the books and Buckeye Nation is left with that horrible feeling of not having a game to look forward to this weekend. In a sudden turn of events, the B1G is not as awful as everyone predicted. The B1G has three teams in the Top 10 (OSU, MSU, Iowa) even though Iowa may be the biggest imposter ever in the Top 10. Michigan joins the big three in the Top 25 at number 15 and somehow Northwestern is left out of the Top 25, further showing how lazy voters are. Sure Northwestern has lost to #10 Iowa and #15 Michigan but they also have wins over #8 Stanford and #22 Duke. Let’s take a look at how things went for the B1G over the last week.
Illinois (4-3 overall, 1-2 conference)
Last Week: Lost to Wisconsin, 13-24. Illinois struggled on third down only converting three times on 12 attempts. Add in the fact that they had seven penalties and two fumble recoveries and you have all the ingredients for an 11 point loss.
This Week: The Illini travel east to take on Penn State. They have played Iowa and Wisconsin pretty tough the last two weeks. With it being a noon contest, I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if the Illini pulled off the upset.
This Week in Recruiting: Illinois received a commitment from 2-star kicker James McCourt. They sit at 17 commits for the 2016 class.
Indiana (4-4 overall, 0-4 conference)
Last Week: Lost to Michigan State, 26-52. In a game where the final score does not tell the whole story, Indiana actually played really well against one of the top teams in the nation. With six minutes left in the game, the Hoosiers only trailed 26-31. MSU would then rattle off three touchdowns in three minutes to win in “blowout” fashion.
This Week: Bye Week.
This Week in Recruiting: Indiana did not have any commits this week. They sit at 10 commits for the 2016 class.
Iowa (7-0 overall, 3-0 conference)
Last Week: Bye Week.
This Week: The Hawkeyes welcome Maryland to town. The schedule is pretty easy going from here as they managed to miss Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, and Penn State. Barring any disasters, expect to see Iowa representing the B1G West at 12-0 and ranked in the Top-5 in December.
This Week in Recruiting: Iowa did not have any commits this week. They sit at 23 commits for the 2016 class.
Maryland (2-5 overall, 0-3 conference)
Last Week: Lost to Penn State, 30-31. Maryland played this game much closer than anyone expected. Noted Buckeye demolisher, Perry Hills, continued to put up big stats throwing for 225 yards and rushing for 124 yards but his three interceptions were costly.
This Week: Maryland travels to Des Moines to face the undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes. It could be a long day for Maryland.
This Week in Recruiting: Maryland did not have any commits this week. They sit at 18 commits for the 2016 class.
Michigan (5-2 overall, 2-1 conference)
Last Week: Bye Week.
This Week: Our rivals travel to frigid Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers in a night game. This will be a defensive slugfest full of boringness and semi-cold temperatures. Right now it is predicted to be 49 degrees at kick-off.
This Week in Recruiting: Michigan did not have any commits this week. They sit at 21 commits for the 2016 class.
Michigan State (8-0 overall, 4-0 conference)
Last Week: Beat Indiana 52-26. As discussed above, this game was a lot closer than the score indicated. Connor Cook was on fire and threw for 398 yards and four touchdowns. While the stats were impressive, his ball placement was amazing. He puts the ball in good spots and lets his wide receivers make plays.
This Week: Bye Week.
This Week in Recruiting: Michigan State did not have any commits this week. They sit at 20 commits for the 2016 class.
Minnesota (4-3 overall, 1-2 conference)
Last Week: Bye Week.
This Week: Minnesota welcomes the Wolverines to town. Minnesota is tough to figure out. Some weeks their defense shows up and holds TCU to 23 points and other weeks it is non-existent and gives up 48 to Nebraska. One thing is for sure, the offense is sub-par and the Michigan defense is going to have a field day. Question is can the Michigan offense score if good Minnesota defense shows up?
This Week in Recruiting: Minnesota did not have any commits this week. They sit at 18 commits for the 2016 class.
Nebraska (3-5 overall, 1-3 conference)
Last Week: Nebraska lost to Northwestern 28-30. You really have to begin feeling bad for Cornhusker fans. They’ve had to not only endure five losses but also the fact those five losses were by a combined 13 points. Nebraska had a chance to tie it up after Tommy Armstrong scored with a little over five minutes left but the two point conversion was no good.
This Week: Travel to Indiana to take on Purdue. This should be a good game for Nebraska to take out some of their anger.
This Week in Recruiting: Nebraska did not have any commits this week. They sit at 15 commits for the 2016 class.
Northwestern (6-2 overall, 2-2 conference)
Last Week: Beat Nebraska 30-28. I admit it…I thought Northwestern was going to lose this one. Year after year we see Northwestern lose a big game and it completely sends them into a tail spin. Northwestern was able to bounce back from two straight losses by a combined 68 points and pull out the win on the road against a decent team.
This Week: Bye Week.
This Week in Recruiting: Northwestern did not have any commits this week. They sit at 19 commits for the 2016 class.
Penn State (6-2 overall, 3-1 conference)
Last Week: Penn State beat Maryland, 31-30. Christian Hackenberg had a nice day throwing for 315 yards and three touchdowns. Somehow, Saquon Barkley did not run for 200 yards which I just assumed was his average after watching him run last week. He struggled with only 65 yards on 20 carries.
This Week: Home against Illinois.
This Week in Recruiting: Penn State received a de-commitment from Christian Colon. They sit at 19 commits for the 2016 class.
Purdue (1-6 overall, 0-3 conference)
Last Week: Bye Week.
This Week: The Boilermakers welcome Nebraska to town and I don’t think they will be gracious house guests. The Cornhuskers should show up angry and score some points.
This Week in Recruiting: Purdue did not have any commits this week. They sit at 9 commits for the 2016 class.
Rutgers (3-4 overall, 1-3 conference)
Last Week: Rutgers lost to Ohio State, 7-49. Unfortunately for Rutgers, they caught Ohio State finally running on full cylinders and allowed Barrett and Elliott to have huge days.
This Week: Travel to Madison to take on Wisconsin.
This Week in Recruiting: Rutgers did not have any commits this week. They sit at 18 commits for the 2016 class.
Wisconsin (6-2 overall, 3-1 conference)
Last Week: Wisconsin beat Illinois, 24-13. Wisconsin was expecting starting running back Corey Clement back but he did not play. Starting quarterback Joel Stave was injured but back-up Bart Houston came in and threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns to help the Badgers win a tough one.
This Week: Wisconsin welcomes Rutgers to town.
This Week in Recruiting: Wisconsin received a commitment from safety Eric Burrell. They sit at 20 commits for the 2016 class.
