Anyone an Official/Referee/Umpire?

bkochmc

Assistant Coach
I was reading JonathanXC's thread about starting his new job where he mentioned he is a professional umpire and it made me curious how many other officials/referees/umpires are here on the 'Planet... or at least the ones willing to admit they are.

I am a track & field official and have my OHSAA and USATF licenses. My assigments are usually for the throws (discus, shot put, hammer) or the jumps (long, triple, high) and occasionaly start junior high meets.

To the poster above, I have always wondered what a official makes per game/meet, if you do know, how much does a football ref make for a regular varsity game?
My knowledge of football officials pay is the league sets how much they get paid before the season starts. For non-conference games the home team sets the pay. That is all the info I can give as I do not believe it is a flat rate across the board. I know this is the case with track because there are some meets where I get paid a good amount of money and there are other meets that I don't get paid at all. The average pay for a track meet is around $40... will usually get paid more for large meets, less for dual/tri meets. When factoring in the amount of travel time and time at the meet the pay is usually less than $9/hr. Remember: most officials, myself included, are doing it only for the love of the sport and not to make a living off of. Only a fortunate few in the high-profile sports can make a living off of doing what they love to do... hopefully JonathanXC can be one of those fortunate few. :)

EDIT: I just want to be clear that even those fortunate few that can make a living off of officating almost all of them still have some sort of other job they need to work. The only "full-time" officials I know are ones that have retired from their regular jobs.

I dunno...i know a few people who all they do is officiate, and make a good living at it. I know a few people who assign basketball and baseball, and also officiate it too, and they make quite a bit of money. Also, MLB NBA, and NHL officials usually don't have another job...whereas NFL officials do, because they only work on the weekend.

Quiz: Why is this umpire in a hurry?

Watch as home-plate umpire Brian O'Nora beats a hasty and urgent retreat from his designated work area during the first inning of Friday night's Phillies-Mets game:

Question: Why is he doing this? I'll give you a moment to process your thoughts ...

Wrong.

Here's your answer: Apparently... the press box said that O'Nora swallowed his chew...

I shall now barf on behalf of Mr. O'Nora. You thought he merely had to poop, didn't you?
