All-American Cornerback Antonio Cromartie Out For 2005 Season. The junior will have surgery next week to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. July 13, 2005

Florida State junior cornerback Antonio Cromartie will miss the 2005 season after tearing the ACL in his left knee during voluntary workouts Tuesday evening. Cromartie, a preseason first team All-American, had an MRI Wednesday morning and head trainer Randy Oravetz confirmed the injury and said Cromartie will undergo surgery to repair the knee next week.

Cromartie, who attended Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, tied for second last year in the ACC with four interceptions. He was also responsible for two defensive touchdowns. Sophomore J.R. Bryant will move up to first team at left cornerback opposite senior Gerard Ross to start fall practice.

QUOTES FROM DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR Mickey Andrews

"You are going to have some unexpected things like this happen. Sometimes it's academics, sometimes it's injuries. He told me he was out here working on his preparations and just went up for a ball, got his feet tied up and landed awkwardly.

It's disappointing for him and it's disappointing for our team. He was right there on the verge of becoming a dominating player. He's a preseason All-American so obviously it's a big loss for us.

You never know what the plan is. Maybe it was for him to earn his degree, be an All-American next year and then move on to the NFL as a redshirt junior. It is how you handle setbacks that is important. He'll bounce back from this.

What it does now is open up an opportunity for one of the other cornerbacks to become a starter. One of those guys is going to have to find a way to become a dependable starter.

We'll probably open up practice with Gerard Ross and J.R. Bryant as the starting cornerbacks. The freshmen (Tony Carter, Trevor Ford and Joe Manning) will be given an opportunity to prove that they deserve one of the starting jobs. <!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->

<!-- STORY AD ENDS HERE -->In 1993, we lost two defensive backs before the season even started with Corey Fuller and Steve Gilmer going down. Antonio has a little setback right now. We've got great surgeons, great rehab people, and he has a great work ethic. He will still have a role on this year's team. Even though he won't be playing, he'll still be in meetings and out here at practice helping these young guys get better."

QUOTES FROM JUNIOR CORNERBACK Antonio Cromartie

"Of course I'm really disappointed that I won't be able to play this year. I think we have a very good team that is capable of winning a national championship and I wanted to help be a part of that. We can still get to the Rose Bowl because there are some very good young players in the secondary. They just have to step up now."

The thing that is the most frustrating is I really worked hard this offseason because I want to be one of the best corners in the country. I felt like I was in the best condition I've ever been in. You just have to believe that things happen for a reason though. Now I will work on getting my degree and doing rehab on my knee.

I still plan on being involved with team in terms of meetings and practices. I talked with Coach Andrews about that earlier today. I want to help out however I can even if I'm not playing. I'll go to meetings and try to help out the young guys and then go out to practice to help them out with things I might see with their technique."

I feel like if I do everything the trainers and doctors tell me to do, I'll be back ready to go for next season."

Canes will roll em and go undefeated! You heard it here first! Not that I like them. Their schedule looks easier and easier.
Not so fast -- they still have their conference play to complete.

They were surprised last year, I don't think it is that much easier this time around.

Though the Canes will beat FSU, barring lightning coming down and striking all wearing Cryami colors.

Now that FSU has to actually play a team or two... they have a new excuse...

Beating the blind sisters or the poor each year does not impress... FreeShoesU is right up there with TennCheat in my book... too bad for the kid though...

Ummmmmmmmmmm.....FSU has played Miami and UF every year for how long? They're the only big 3 team to do this on a yearly basis way before miami became a member of the ACC.......2 non-conference opponents of that caliber is unbelievable year and year out.....not too mention theyve done that while playing notre dame, colorado, theyve scheduled a weak syracuse team hoping theyd be better...........im a huge osu fan but i dont see what we've done to consider ourselves having a difficult out of conference schedule...the acc was always weak but playing uf and um every year has to mean something

By the way, no matter how bad it gets for FSU the game against miami will be close....except for 2001 it always has been, even in 2002 when Miami was supposed to dominate them at the orange bowl.....I actually like FSU this year, great LB's, best running back combo in the country, and a new offensive line coach that is supposed to be making huge strides in the offensive system (former marshall offensive coordinator)

I must admit I've never felt sorry for FSU in my entire life, even while playing Florida and Miami every year. I've always seen Bobby Bowden the same way as probably the rest of the nation sees Jim Tressel: a Teflon Don of sorts. However, having said that, being dealt a hand that they are being dealt right now with losing starting QB Sexton (lyme disease), AA LB Sims (arrested- domestic battery), and AA DB Cromartie (injury) among others, I must say that that sucks. On the bright side, they still have all-world QB Xavier Lee (whom I'd have killed for to see in S&G), and I'm sure they have more than adequate back-ups for Cromartie and Sims (who will be out only temporarily). Sportswriters are suddenly predicting doom and gloom for FSU, but believe me, they will do JUST FINE. Quote me on that one. No Rose Bowl for them this year, but they will NOT go 6-5 like SI's Stewart Mandel thinks. Cromartie will cheer from the sidelines this year, but the world will still turn for FSU fans.

I don't want to ridicule ya bm91 or accuse you of not being a Buckeye or what not, but I did want to point out that the way you wrote your post, it most definetly sounded like you weren't a Buckeye fan. The last thing ANYONE should ridicule tOSU for is who we schedule for out of conference opponents. ND? NCST? Washington? Texas? USC? Miami (FL)? Marshall? BG? Miami (OH)? Northern Illinois? Syracuse? UCLA? Those aren't pansy schools we're scheduling, and those are teams I can think that we've played or will soon play off the top of my head. Sure, OSU plays a MAC school every year, but even the ones we've been scheduling lately aren't sloches. Sure, FSU plays Fla and Mia every year, but those are also rivalries. You wanna see a weak out of conference schedule? See Minnesota and Kansas State.

Best running back combo is VERY very arguable. I'd certainly put USC's White/Bush combo before Washington/Booker, but point taken.

Great Post BuckTwenty, agreed completely.
I just wanted to point out that for the last 20 years or so FSU has reguarly had the hardest out of conference schedule in the country........i just graduated from there so it's my second favorite team.....when people say they always played in a weak acc, well yeah but they also scheduled michigans, notre dames, and play uf and um every year.....it's no cakewalk what they do down in tallahassee

osu scheduling the usc's and miami is awesome and im glad theyre going to be playing the best....shows they arent afraid of anyone and are ready to take the national championship not leave it in the hands of a computer system and panel of voters

I don't want to ever hear from anyone that FSU has played a consistently tough schedule.

They always play Miami early and due to all the preseason hype the loser(FSU unless Miami is on probation) stays in the top 5 and then gets 8 guaranteed wins by shit-hammering the likes of Duke, Wake Forest, and UNC untill the season ender vs Florida. The 2 tough games are also non-conference so if they do lose they still get a big time bowl game for being the ACC champion...kinda like a Hilton sister getting an auto bid to a MENSA competition.

2 tough games bookending a creampuff ACC schedule and they get a pass when they lose the first one....thats been the MO for FSU since the early 90's and now that they ACC is getting tough and losing to Miami actually screws them as a conference loss they are FINALLY getting a taste of what its like for the rest of college football's elite teams.

FSU until the last two years reguarly played miami in the middle of the year with florida late in the year....they usually scheduled a team like texas a&m or usc, michigan, byu early on..not all years....they had series with notre dame many times in the 90's and recently int he 2000's. Theyve also scheduled louisville's, colorado's, syracuses to try and compensate for the acc schedule they play....im not gonna say osu has an easier schedule b/c they play the big 10, a conference that has been way stronger than the acc every year of its existence but fsu makes up for it with their out-of-conference schedule.

The only reason FSU is playing UF right now is because it was state mandated. Miami would play UF too but UF is having "difficulty" scheduling us.

As far as FSU's schedule, they've always had some decent OOC schedules. No one can fault them for their schedule.

As far as the Miami/FSU series, how does Miami's schedule look easier? They've played on Labor Day exactly once in their history. They still have to play @ VT which is very difficult.

Speaking of scheduling, it looks like a Miami/OU matchup is being set for 07 and 09.

At Va Tech? No problem. Just bring a bunch of hottie 13-year-old girls and put em on your sideline. Can't win without a quarterback (unless you have Ginn).
