From the meltdown contest thread:
So, why am I going to bother responding to Mac4lyfe, especially here on Buckeye planet, where Mac, no doubt, won't see it? Well, I'm bored, for one. For another, Al Gore's interweb is free enough for me to use it for these purposes.
Quickly, I don't recall ESPN saying Ohio State could beat God. Next, while it might be fun, I'm not real sure where all the "questions" are on the schedule Ohio State played, so I'll just leave that alone. I mean, Indiana isn't very good, but Ohio State did all they could be expected to do in that game... destroy them.
So, this rant comes down to the last line. Illinois, (who, incidentally, didn't play a perfect game), SHOULD have beaten Ohio State.
OK... Lets see here... on the surface we have a Florida fan taking issue with Ohio State's one and only "ugly win" this year. And, I must agree, Ohio State's game against Illinois was indeed an ugly win. See, what Mac should have said isn't that Illinois SHOULD have beaten Ohio State, he should have said, Ohio State SHOULD have destroyed Illinois, but didn't. Not sure that helps his ridiculous argument, but thats neitehr here nor there. Want to see some ugly wins?
Florida v. Vanderbilt (4 - 8) 25 - 19
Florida v. South Carolina (7 - 5) 17 - 16
Florida v. Florida State (6-6) 21 - 14
Now, admittedly, Illinois is 2 - 10, so it's not quite apples to apples here. In any case, You're ranked #2, Florida... don't you beat the crap out of cellar dweller Vandy? Not so much. You're the second best team in the land, Florida, don't you crush South Carolina? Well, no.. but you do block a couple kicks to save the win. You're, according to Mac's implied contention, probably better than Ohio State, Florida... Great year to beat the piss out of a down Florida State, yes? Well.. no. Maybe not. Finally, if you want to talk Ugly, have a look at the tape of the 3rd quarter of the SEC Championship game. I mean seriously, 3 time outs burned on one drive, resulting in a punt (Although, Ourkansas gifted you a TD on the muff... well done... :clap, clap :
Anyway, it's not my point to compare Florida's schedule strength against Ohio State's. I'm going to give the SOS to them because I'm not insane. My point is this - if you wish to support the notion of "how Florida matches up to Ohio State" you might want to do better than the ugly win angle.
Now then... I can see the Mac certainly knows his Big Ten football. I'm certain, in reading his review, that he watched every minute of the Ohio State Illinois game, and didn't simply look at the final score.
llinois didn't play a perfect game. Well, I suppose that's technically true. Brasic threw a pick, and there was a fumble... not to mention, they did get flagged 1 time for 15 yards. I suppose it may be true in some other sense as well, and that being that the Zooker couldn't figure out which QB he wanted to go with. I suppose on the Zooker, Florida fans should be given a pass when it comes to recognizing that Zook teams won't be playing perfect. So, OK... it wasn't "perfect" but then, it certainly wasn't their worst performance of the year either. (If you're interested, Ohio State lost a fumble, threw a pick, and was penalized 5 times for 39 yards. )
Should have beaten Ohio State, huh? As I watched that game, I don't recall worrying that Illinois was going to beat Ohio State when the 1st Q ended 7 - 0. I certainly didn't bite off all my fingernails when Ohio State went to half with a 17 - 0 lead. At the end of the 3rd, I remember being frustrated that Tressel had gone to play calling which went as such, "Off Tackle, Off Tackle, 3rd and Long, pass, Punt), but I don't remember being worried that the 17 - 0 lead would stand up. Then, when Illinois intercepted a Smith pass at the OSU 48 and drove 38 yards for a FG with about 9:00 to go, I don't remember thinking, Holy Crap, we're in real trouble here! Then, when Illinois scored with 1:27 to go in the game to make it 17 - 10, I surely don't remember thinking, OH MY GOD!!!!! We're gonna fucking lose! I do remember thinking, "Huh.. if they get an on-side kick they might tie this. Unreal." but, then, they didn't get the on-side kick. And I said to myself, "Nice effort. Sure was a lot closer on the scoreboard than I thought it'd be. Wonder what other games are on?"
So, I wonder Mac... at what point during the game did you decide "Wow, Illinois SHOULD be beating Ohio State." What drive was it? What play? I mean, it sure can't be Ohio State having to come from behind to beat an inferior opponant, since OSU never trailed. But, But, it must be something. Afterall, you're emphasis on SHOULD indicates to me you know what you're talking about.

Re: How do we matchup against tOSU? All of you have bought into the espn spin of OSU being able to beat God. A quick glance at their schedule and there are many questions to be answered and they don't seem so invincible.
The Illini didn't play there perfect game and SHOULD have beaten OSU. I think Boise State has a better argument of being number 1.
