Cory Kovanda was named 2007 Ping!Baseball Freshman All-American Honorable Mention
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Cory Kovanda, a freshman second baseman on the Ohio State baseball team, was named 2007 Ping!Baseball Freshman All-American Honorable Mention Sunday. Kovanda started 51 of the Buckeyes' 55 games in 2007 and helped spark the team's run to the Big Ten tournament title and bid to the NCAA Championships.
For the season, Kovanda posted a .289 batting average (48-166), scored 25 runs and knocked in 17 RBI. The product of Worthington Kilbourne High School finished his rookie campaign with a .964 field percentage, committing just nine errors in 251 total chances.
Kovanda excelled in the postseason for Ohio State. He went 2-4 and scored
a run in the Big Ten tournament opener, a 10-3 Buckeye victory over Penn State. In the NCAA Regional at College Station, Texas, Kovanda went 3-11 in the three contests and had a key one-out hit in the 10th inning to help set up Ohio State's 6-5 win over Le Moyne in Game 3.
The Buckeyes finished the 2007 season with a 38-24 overall record and made their 18th overall appearance in the NCAA championships.
