Who gets your vote?
Linemen rarely receive the accolades they deserve. Banging in the trenches every play, the big guys are seriously the heart and soul of the team. Last weekend one of the future Buckeyes proved that even though they don't throw touchdowns or rush for over 100 yards, that linemen can win awards too.
After a stellar performance on both side of the ball that helped his Leipsic squad to a 35-3 win over Arlington, Ohio State class of 2016 pledge Gavin Cupp picked up 74% of your votes to easily walk away with the Land-Grant Holy Land MVP of the week award.
Cupp, and quite a few of his soon-to-be Buckeye teammates were back at it over the last few days. Trying to lead their schools to the next round in the playoffs, many of the commits put up huge numbers. Which Ohio State pledge did enough to be named MVP? The poll is open. Let your voice be heard, and vote.
Here are your five nominees:
Antonio Williams
Sitting out the last two weeks of the regular season, Williams was back in action on Friday. Although he stacked the stat sheet, Antonio and North Stanly's (NC) opening round playoff game against East Montgomery didn't go as they had planned.
Starting the game off strong, East Montgomery came from behind to defeat Williams, and the comets, 33-21. In what turned out to be his last game in a North Stanly jersey the four-star prospect sure didn't disappoint. Doing as he did most of his high school career, Antonio gave it his all, rushing for 205 yards, and all three of his teams touchdowns.
Tristen Wallace
Wallace came up big on Friday night. It wasn't just his arm, but also his legs that helped lead DeSoto (TX) over Coppell, 35-31.
Completing 5 out of his 8 passing attempts in the win, Wallace accounted for 84 yards and a touchdown through the air. Doing most of his damage on the ground, the OSU class of 2016 commit once again showed he isn't scared to tuck the ball and bang for extra yards. Toting the rock a total of 18 times he rushed for 126 yards, and two DeSoto touchdowns. It wasn't a perfect evening for Wallace, as one of his only hiccups of the game was throwing an interception early in the first half of action.
Todd Sibley
In what ended up being his best performance of the season, Sibley, a 2017 running back, put Akron Archbishop Hoban on his back and carried the Knights to a 21-14 Division III Regional Semifinal victory.
Taking on a very solid Louisville squad, the four-star talent was a one man wrecking crew. Pacing the Hoban offense on the ground, SIbley carried the ball 39 times, finishing with an eye-popping 298 yards from scrimmage. While it might have been from only a few yards out his loan touchdown on the night was definitely a game changer. In what was a tied match up in the fourth quarter, Todd's two yard score helped to close the door for good, putting Hoban one step closer to winning a state title.
Danny Clark
Sibley wasn't the only future Buckeye to have a part in Hoban's success on the field against Louisville. While he didn't have the numbers of his running back, Danny Clark still affected the outcome. In Hoban's victory, the junior quarterback completed 10 of his 22 passing attempts for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
After defeating Louisville on Friday, Clark, Sibley and Hoban will mix it up with crosstown rival Akron St. Vincent St. Mary next week in what should be a battle from the kickoff.
Wayne Davis
Kicking off the Virginia state playoffs, the class of 2016 commit and his Lake Taylor dominated Denbigh to pick up their 11th win of the season. Keeping their title hopes alive, the Titans rolled over the Patriots, 55-14.
Seeing time on both defense and offense, Davis once again proved why the Buckeyes offered him a chance to suit up i the Scarlet and Gray. From his safety spot, Wayne stated to Land-Grant Holy Land that he racked up around 14 total tackles and intercepted a pass, which he nearly returned to pay dirt before being snatched up near the goal line.
His standout play didn't stop in the secondary. On offense the senior hauled in four passes for 60 yards. In what might have been his play of the game, Davis fumbled a reception in the backfield, scooped up the ball, dodged defenders, and raced down the sidelines well over 50 yards for a Lake Taylor touchdown.
