Ohio standout Dorian Jones reflects on recent Ohio State official visit

Richmond Heights (Ohio) 2025 shooting guard Dorian Jones was here competing at the Nike EYBL one week after making an official visit to Ohio State.

The 6-5 Jones is ranked as the nation's No. 37 prospect overall, No. 5 shooting guard and No. 2 overall in Ohio for the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.com. We checked in with Jones on how his visit with new head coach Jake Diebler and his staff worked out last week.

"The visit went pretty good," Jones said. "I enjoyed myself a lot. I got to meet the new coaching staff and a lot of great people."

Taking a look at the Ohio State basketball team's 2025 signees

Jones is a shooting guard who stands at 6'4 and just 160 pounds. He needs to gain weight before he's ready to deal with the rigors of the Big Ten Conference, but he can shoot the ball. Diebler wants his team to be full of guys who can shoot from deep, and Jones can do that.

Ohio State commit Dorian Jones not expected to enroll this summer

The four-star guard will spend one season at the junior college or prep academy level before joining the Buckeyes in 2026.

Four-star 2025 Ohio State commit Dorian Jones is not expected to enroll at the university or join the men’s basketball program this summer, Jones confirmed on his social media.

Jones, who committed to Ohio State last July, is a 6-foot-4, 160-pound guard out of Richmond Heights High School. He was the second prep commitment to Ohio State during the Jake Diebler era of men’s basketball, after 2026 Marcus Johnson did so in April of 2025.

A high-level shooter with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, Jones is currently the top-rated Ohio player in the 2025 class, the 19th-rated shooting guard in the class, and the No. 114 recruit in the nation. His recruiting has slipped some during a senior season that’s seen him miss considerable time due to illness — he was the No. 72 recruit in the nation when he committed last summer.

Jones is still firmly committed to Ohio State, but he is expected to either play one season at a junior college or a preparatory academy this academic year to continue his development. With Bruce Thornton and John Mobley locked into starting roles and Taison Chatman and Gabe Cupps competing for backup minutes, Jones would have had a challenging — but not impossible — path to earn consistent minutes this upcoming season.

Ohio State’s other incoming freshman — 6-foot-8 power forward A’mare Bynum — is still expected to enroll this summer and could have a substantial role this season.

Jones’ year playing prep basketball should not affect his collegiate eligibility, giving him four seasons starting in 2026. This precedent was set in December 2024, when Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia sued the NCAA requesting an additional year of eligibility after spending his first season at New Mexico Military Academy — a junior college.

Jones not enrolling at Ohio State this year opens up one additional spot on the men’s basketball roster. Diebler and his staff are expected to bring in an additional player to take that spot at some point this summer.

Just sayin': Apparently he will (basically) be a 2026 recruit now.

Cannot fault this young man. Undersized at 165 pounds, could probably use a year or so putting on some muscle. Improving his skill level might be a plus as well, although he's probably been hooping since he was six. Diebs will have to reopen his recruitment, starting from just a little above scratch, as don't quite believe his commitment carries over for a year (officially, if not mentally). Always want to see Ohio's best become Buckeyes, but our best have been usually poached by outside schools, except for those that aren't.....Go Bucks! PS, does tOSU have a 'place' to stash these guys going the prep school route? Cannot remember if Ohio has such a place inside the state...

Just sayin': I saw some information on 11W that said there might be academic issues to....

Four-star guard Dorian Jones also signed to play with Ohio State, but has since pushed back his college enrollment due to reported academic eligibility issues.

Thanks Script. Read something about that as well. However, article said he had 'reopened' his recruitment. Sounds like he wants a home where he can tee it up on the court immediately, and not do a year in jc or an 'academy'. Pretty certain he'll find one who'll take him. Keep telling the kids around here, that no big school is going to spend all that money on a kid that won't be around due to grades, even with all the tutoring that's available. Well, more telling the parent, who's extremely proud of their kid's accomplishments athletically, but not so much in the classroom.
