I guess the real question there is what does OSU-football-level-success even look like for basketball? The blue-bloods and top programs in basketball don't have the same kind of consistently high level of success that the top football programs have, there is just way too much parity in college basketball and our NC-deciding Tournament is a field of 68 where one game of off-shooting, bad luck, bad calls, bad match-up, the other team playing out of their minds, etc. can send you home early, regardless of how good you were in the regular season.

Holtmann does have a good performance baseline going here, though many might not care to admit that. People scoff at the 20-win season thing but only 2 other P5 programs have done that every season in the time that Holtmann has been at OSU, and Holtmann typically schedules a tougher than average OOC and the B1G has had a lot of competitive depth most of the seasons he has been at OSU. He also makes the Dance every season, and that to me is possibly the most important fundamental criteria. Because anything can happen in the Dance, but anything can't happen for you there if you're not in it.

We all want to see better high-end results, though, that is a given. We've been sitting on that corner without quite being able to turn it into a notable achievement, be it a conference championship, conference tournament championship, or S16 (or better) appearance. And under Holtmann we've been close to all of those things at various points, but no cigar. It's certainly frustrating but at the same time it is important to have perspective and be realistic about how the program is doing in the larger scheme of things. Hopefully the up-tick in recruiting will help lead to the steps forward we all want to see.

Agreed, you just took the time to articulate what I was thinking. I don't think anyone with reason is expecting the Buckeye hoopsters to make the final 4 every year..... that's what our expectations are for the Buckeye football program though. But bc of the sheer amount of teams in D1 basketball alone, that just isn't realistic for even the blue bloods of the sport. But being near the top of the B1G annually and making deep runs in the tournament consistently isn't too much to ask.

A sweet 16 appearance would be great given the recruits we're bringing in. I most definitely don't expect a Final 4 appearance every year either, but hopefully we don't get bounced so quickly bringing the Middleton's of the world in.

Breaking down Scotty Middleton's game

Full Scouting Report

Middleton is a big wing, with good positional size at 6-foot-6-plus and very long arms. He has really bought into the defensive end of the floor within the last year, particularly during the high school season. He gets low in his stance, is light on his feet, even fairly physical with his chest, and active off the ball. Most of all, his length just keeps him in plays even when it looks like he is initially beat or out of position. He’s already proven he can defend multiple positions, against the highest levels of high school competition in the country.

Offensively, he remains a work-in-progress. He’s not a primary playmaker or creator, but he’s made strides as a spot-up shooter, has a complimenting pull-up game that he can get off over top of smaller defenders, and shows some flashes of slashing potential, although he still gets bumped off the line of his drive at times.

Overall, he’s a bit of a role player extraordinaire right now, who doesn’t need to score a lot of points to impact winning and has long-term 3-and-D potential as his shooting keeps evolving.

Yes, Scotty Middleton still thinks he could beat former teammate Gradey Dick in a game of one-on-one​

Scotty spoke with myself and Land-Grant Holy Land’s Justin Golba last summer, right after his commitment to Ohio State in August 2022. During our roughly 20-minute conversation, we had to ask him if he thought he could beat his former teammate in a game of one-on-one. Side note: if you want to hear the entire conversation, you can find it below.

“Who’s winning, me or Grady?” Once Middleton stopped laughing at the thought, he responded, “Grady I love you, but I won’t lie, I’m winning one-on-one. I’m winning.”

Since that proclamation from Middleton last summer, Gradey Dick went on to be named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year — the best freshman in the best conference in America. He was also named second-team All-Big 12, drafted in the back end of the lottery, and signed a four-year deal with the Toronto Raptors where he will make roughly $5.3 million dollars per year.

11W information one 1 game suspension for Middleton:

20 Jan 2024: Freshman guard Scotty Middleton, Ohio State's top wing off the bench, has been suspended for the contest (i.e Penn State) due to a violation of team rules.
22 Jan 2024: Bench contributor Scotty Middleton, who served a one-game suspension against the Nittany Lions for violating team rules. Middleton will return to play against the Cornhuskers.
