The race started on Saturday with a shot ceremonial run, and starts in earnest on Sunday.

The vBet will be open for a 24-hour period starting sometime on Monday.

Here is a link to the Current Standings.

NOTE - this vBet normally pays out before the NCAA Tournament bets are closed..

OK, the odds have been set. The race has started, and the bet will remain open for about 24 hours.

Post 1 has a link to the current standings, which are usually updated at least once per hour.

When I placed my bets just before the cutoff time this morning, I went for 6 different mushers, who at the time were in 1st, 3rd, 4th, 11th, 12th, and 13th place.

14 hours later, they are now 1-2-3-4-5-6.

They won't finish that way, so I need to pat myself on the back right away!

Geez, here we go again. :shake:

You think a guy this flexible wouldn't be reaching to pat his back all the time...

This is shaping up to be a helluva race. Right now, the leaders are all in Takotna. It looks like Aliy Zirkle got there first, but when the staggered start is factored in, she's actually 3 minutes behind Mitch Seavey. (Everybody with a higher bib number will gain 2 minutes for each number when they take their required 24-hour layover, so Mitch will gain 42 minutes on her, 2 times (35-14)). But the amount of people within a few minutes of each other at the front of the race is unusual.

Mitch and his son Dan are moving at the fastest rate on the course right now. Mitch's father is Dan, who is 74 years old and in last place, but he's running to mark history as the only musher in this race who also ran the inaugural Iditarod back in 1973.

4-time winner Lance Mackey slowed down on his last leg. It looks like he's taking his 24-hour stop at McGrath, while all of the other leaders went past there, and most of them will take it at Takotna, where they arrived last night.

Mitch Seavey is the first musher to reach Ruby, one of 4 stops on the Yukon River that the racers have as choices for the location of their required 8-hour stop. Mitch has said he'll take his 8-hour stop at Ruby. The only other musher in Ruby is his son Dallas, who arrived 67 minutes behind his father.

Mitch's team is better suited for long runs, and Dallas thinks he can let his dogs loose to race faster later in the race. Aliy Zirkle is still close enough to be a threat, as is last year's winner John Baker.

It's difficult to judge the size of a lead until the teams leave a checkpoint. Some teams rest at checkpoints, others rest in cabins along the trail and then spend only a few minutes at the checkpoints.

All of the leaders have taken their 24-hour and 8-hour rest stops. They must all stop for another 8 hours at White Mountain, 77 miles from the finish, but that's a couple of days away. Mitch Seavey has the lead, but his son Dallas is running faster, and Aliy Zirkle's team will be better rested in the short term. Former winners King and Baker are still within striking distance. These standings are based on when everybody left Galena.

For those following more closely than I -

Has Mackey had problems, or is he just not up to it this year?

I thought King retired?

Mackey has a young team - he ran them in the Yukon Quest last month and finished third. He was near the front early in the race, but couldn't maintain the pace - I haven't heard why.

King had retired, but decided to try once again for a record-tying 5th win.
