Behind the Numbers
Toledo was pretty good by Toledo standards last year. They beat a 4-8 Purdue team. It was the first time they beat a team from a BCS-AQ conference with more than 3 wins since 2006, so they've got that going for them. The last time they beat a BCS-AQ conference team that finished the season with a winning record was back in 2003 when they scratched out a 35-31 win against an 8-win Pittsburgh team. Ohio State hasn't given up that many points to a team from a non-AQ conference since long before the non-AQ term meant anything.

The Buckeyes' average score against MAC opponents has been 36.44 to 11.06. No MAC team has ever beaten the Buckeyes in 18 tries. The Rockets on the other hand have 6 wins and 13 losses against Big Ten teams, with half of the wins coming against the Boilermakers. Toledo has never beaten a B1G team that finished the season at 0.500 or above.

Not that any of that is more than a general comparison of the programs. For a more specific comparison, we could look at the conventional and differential statistics for last year's teams. If we were to do so, we would see that the Buckeyes were superior in ever category but two. The teams were tied in sacks allowed and Toledo had an edge in sacks (but not tackles-for-loss). In most categories, the Buckeyes superiority was so vast it's not worth discussing.

Not that any specific comparison of last year's teams has more than a mild correlation to what the schools are putting on the field this year. Any comparison of this year's teams can only go by last week's games - Ohio State vs. Akron and Toledo vs. New Hampshire. Since BtN typically throws out games against FCS competition, that really isn't much to go on.

Yes, 58 points is the most that Toledo has scored since laying 70 on Northern Illinois back in 2007, and New Hampshire was 5th in FCS in scoring defense last year. The Rockets, however, are about to face a team that was 5th in FBS in scoring defense last year, 4th when games against FCS teams are thrown out. Nevertheless, it is entirely possible that the Silver Bullets will face a steeper increase in competition than will the Rocket offense.

Does that mean we can split the difference between the 58 that the Toledo scored and the shut-out that the Buckeyes posted? Well... Let's just say there's a reason that we discard FCS games and leave it at that.

As for the Rocket defense, sure, they do lead the nation in Turnover Margin (+5)... Ah, who am I kidding. Buckeyes by 4 touchdowns.
The Lighter Side
Something happened during Ohio State's shutout of Akron that went virtually unnoticed, but those of us who create these game previews take great pride in discerning the smallest details involved in each Buckeye football game.

It happened on the line of scrimmage, close to the snap, and it happened on both sides of the line. It started slowly, but once it began, the momentum built steadily, and by the end of the contest, what had transpired was almost as impressive as Chris Gamble being on the field for 118 plays in the National Championship game.

Playing on both sides of the ball, when the field temperature was approaching 130 degrees, a talented Buckeye who's been in the program for years quietly kicked off his 2011 EVAN BLANKENSHIP HEISMAN CAMPAIGN. Several appropriate URL's are still available, so head to GoDaddy.com right now and stake your claim.

You thought that Jim Bollman didn't have enough depth on the O-Line? OK, we won't name a specific poster, but clearly those concerned about the O-Line depth, especially until the Nebraska game when Mike Adams gets back, have forgotten about Evan Blankenship, who comprised an entire season of O-Line recruiting all by himself! Not even Orlando Pace can make that statement.

If you have any doubt about his footwork and athleticism, have you seen his skateboard videos?

Admittedly, he's bulked up a little since those were filmed, but Evan remains very agile.

We're just waiting for the final home game of the season, where we fully expect Evan Blankenship to sing the National Anthem, block a field goal, get a sack/scoop-and-score, run back a tipped pass for a pick-six, pancake the Mike LB multiple times on trap and power plays, dot the 'i' in Script Ohio at halftime, and then top it off by scoring on a fumblerooski-like trick play to win the game in the final minute. OK, it can't be an actual fumblerooski, dammit, since the NCAA made intentional fumbles illegal after the 1992 season, but we expect enough creativity in the play-calling to make something like that happen.

There may be some of you doubting that truly great things can happen for the Buckeyes this season, but when you're standing inside the freezing 'Shoe in mid-January, listening to Evan Blankenship's moving rendition of Carmen Ohio at the National Championship celebration, just remember that it all started back in that same stadium on a very hot day in early September.

Until then, we give you these previews of his singing:

EVAN BLANKENSHIP FOR HEISMAN

Traditions & Opponent Perspective

Nickname

In 1923 the nicknameless University of Toledo football team (The team had been sometimes refered to as "the Blue and Gold, Munies and Dwyers Boys until then) met Carnegie Tech, losing 32-12. Writers from Pittsburgh asked a UT student named James Neal who was working in the press box to come up with a nick name for the team. He decided on "Skyrockets" as he was impressed with his team's "flashy" performance against the superior Carnegie team. The writers shortened that to "Rockets" and has been used ever since. Other names have been considered, Toreadors and Bulls (in reference to Toledo, Spain), as well as Commodores, Turtles, Jeeps and Bancroft Highwaymen.

School Colors
The colors Midnight Blue and Gold were selected by 10 of the 14 football lettermen who attended the organizational meeting for the Varsity T club on December 1, 1919.

Fight Song
"U of Toledo" was written in 1932 by Dave Connelly, who also served as UT athletic director and baseball coach through the 1930s and 1940s. Connelly's version, which he hummed to a friend named Bernie Jones who ultimately wrote the music, contained a chorus and verse, but as of 1975 the verse has been dropped.

Alma Mater
Debuting at the half of a Marshall v. Toledo basketball game on March 2, 1959, "Fair Toledo" was selected from eight entries which were submitted in the UT Alma Mater Song Contest in an effort to replace "Golden and Blue," which was set to "Amici," a tune used by several universities. Much like the fight song, the winner did not have any formal musical training. Gilbert Mohr hummed various tunes, and then later with his wife, Jean Strout, wrote lyrics. They received a $100 government bond for winning the contest.

The Cannon
Fired off before each home game, at the end of each quarter, and after every Rocket score, the cannon has been a part of UT football since 1953. A Civil War era model, the cannon was obtained from a Pi Kappa Phi member who bartered the cannon in lieu of his fraternity dues.

The Rocket
As Ohio State fans, we know about "hating" your rival. UT turns it up a notch. Obtained in 1961, UT has a genuine Nike-Ajax missile from the U.S. Army missile in the northeast corner of the Glass Bowl, just outside of the wall. The one-ton Rocket, painted midnight blue and gold has propellant boost capable of guiding the missile to a supersonic velocity. It is said that the rocket's trajectory is pointed directly towards Toledo's rival Bowling Green State University, 25 miles south and if it were to be actually fired would land on the 50-yard line of the Falcons' Doyt Perry football stadium.

The Peace Pipe
Ironically, despite aiming a live warhead at their rival, UT and Bowling Green play for an object known as the Peace Pipe. Beginning in 1948, the trophy was awarded to the winner of UT BGSU basketball games until the pipe was stolen in 1969 by a thief who was never caught. The pipe was likewise never recovered. In 1980, using a miniature peace pipe replica which sits atop a trophy the Peace Pipe is awarded to the winner of the annual gridiron battle.

Spirit Rock
Tarred and feathered, burnt, and painted hundreds of times (traditionally only painted during twilight hours), Spirit Rock has hosted many pep rallies. The original 8-ton stone donated in 1968 was replaced in 1997 owing to the expansion of the Student Union which was where it sat. The original stone now rests near a pond at Scott Park Campus. The 1997 stone is located in "the flatlands."

Rocky the Rocket
In the 1966-67 academic year Toledo's Spirits and Traditions committee decided to increase school spirit by having some student dress up during select games. In 1968, however, Bill Navarre became the first "Rocky the Rocket" dressed in a costume which was essentially a wastepaper basket with a pointed rocket top made of paper-meche. (couldn't have been any worse than the original Brutus the Buckeye). Over the years, the costume has undergone changes, including the transformation to an "astronaut" theme. In the 1970s, with the help of John Glenn, Rocky sported an authentic NASA spacesuit, helmet and boots. In 1983, Rocky became a "plush" clad mascot, undergoing minor changes and ultimately becoming the cartoon like "super hero" unveiled officially in 2008.

Rocket Fanatics
Organized in 1995 in an effort to increase student spirit, pride, attendance and participation this group saw an increase in popularity in 2000 after adopting the slogan "See you at the game" and giving out T-Shirts. Now, every UT student is considered a Rocket Fanatic the moment they enroll and Rocket Fanatic t-shirts are regularly seen in the student sections of football and basketball games.
