Behind the Numbers
This week, we are taking a slightly different approach to looking at numbers. Each of the B1G teams have now played 6 conference games. We'll look at tOSU and Penn State, as well as the final conference opponent for each team, TSUN and Wisconsin.

All of the numbers in this section reflect team statistics taken from conference games only.

Team...PPG Off...PPG Def
Wisc....45.2......20.7
TSUN....32.8......17.3
tOSU....23.5......21.0
PnSt....18.3......13.2

No explanations are really necessary, everybody understands scoring averages. Penn State has the best defensive number in the B1G, and TSUN's is second.

Team..PassEff-O..PassEff-D
Wisc...185.6.....107.4
TSUN...133.8.....120.8
tOSU...111.9.....129.9
PnSt...104.7......97.1

We believe that passing efficiency is a better measure than simply looking at passing yards. Wisconsin is going to set conference records for passing efficiency this season behind Russell Wilson. tOSU and Penn State both struggle to throw the ball, which can be attributed to youth and moxie, respectively. On defense, Penn State leads the B1G with Wisconsin coming in second.

Team..RushYPA-O..RushYPA-D
Wisc...5.82......4.12
TSUN...4.83......3.49
tOSU...4.48......3.36
PnSt...4.06......3.46

Finally, a category that Buckeye fans can be proud of: rushing defense. Sparty leads the B1G allowing 3.01 ypc , and tOSU is in a tie with Illinois for second place. On offense, Penn State's number is suprisingly low, since Silas Redd has put up decent numbers. The ineffectiveness of the passing offenses is also making it more difficult for the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions to run the ball.

Team..Yd/Play-O..Yd/Play-D
Wisc...7.19......4.93
TSUN...6.08......4.94
tOSU...4.89......4.98
PnSt...4.99......4.38

This category, on defense, is very close among most of these teams. The two conference leaders in the above category, Illinois (4.37 yards/play) and Penn State, have yet to play Wisconsin, so their averages can be expected to go up.

Team..3Down%-O..3Down%-D
Wisc...52.9......40.0
TSUN...50.0......29.5
tOSU...37.2......44.0
PnSt...35.5......36.4

Desired numbers here are above 45% on offense and below 40% on defense. Once again the weakness of the tOSU and PSU offenses are confirmed; while on defense, tOSU's inability to get off the field on third down shows up. The aggressive schemes of TSUN's defense this year have resulted in a league-leading number for TSUN.

Team..Trnovrs-O..Trnovrs-D..Margin
Wisc...02F.02I....03F.08I....+7
TSUN...03F.08I....07F.03I....-1
tOSU...03F.03I....02F.07I....+3
PnSt...06F.04I....05F.09I....+4

These numbers illustrate that TSUN has an issue with turnovers. They throw too many picks, and while they are doing a good job of stripping ball carriers, their secondary doesn't make enough plays on balls in the air.

Team..RedZone-O..RedZone-D
Wisc...6.37 PPP...4.83 PPP
TSUN...4.24 PPP...5.12 PPP
tOSU...5.40 PPP...4.41 PPP
PnSt...3.88 PPP...5.00 PPP

The usual measurement of RZ% is silly, when points per possession is much more informative. tOSU and TSUN have both allowed 13 scores on 17 red zone possessions, so their percentages match; but TSUN has allowed 3 more TDs, and those extra 12 points (compared to FGs) mean an extra 7/10s of a point allowed per possession.

Wisconsin's offensive number is just a monster, since 5.5 PPP is a solid number here (tOSU would be there except for a missed XP last week). The Buckeyes red zone defense is solid, being second in the B1G to Iowa's 4.25.

The Lighter Side
Penn State has obviously been in the news lately due to serious subject matter. If you believe that you may have knowledge of a child being abused, call 1-800-4-A-Child. If you were victimized, please strongly consider coming forward and accusing the abuser.

Last week, Penn State and Nebraska students and fans contributed more than $23,000 for two charitable organizations -- Prevent Child Abuse Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape. A grassroots effort among Penn State alumni has resulted in ProudPSUforRAINN to support the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN). As of Nov. 15, more than 9,400 individuals had contributed more than $375,000, with a goal of raising at least one $1 from each of Penn State's 550,000-plus alumni worldwide. Those efforts are commendable.

But this section is designed to provide a laugh, and The Lighter Side is willing to see dark humor, so if you're easily offended, you may wish to skip this section.

You've been warned - poor taste follows.

First, there is no truth to the rumor that Penn State will intentionally allow tOSU to get an early lead because their coaches like to come from behind.

There's no way that the Penn State's defense will get called for too many men. Their defensive coordinator likes to keep them at 11 and under.

We all thought Sandusky was the defensive coordinator but he was really the 'Head' Coach.

Sandusky's defense will be that he was schooling these young boys in football by teaching them how to receive. Although it's weird seeing a defensive guy teach kids how to pitch and catch.

At Sandusky's arraignment, the judge asked him, "How does 8 to 10 years sound?" He replied, "Sexy."

Did you know that McDdonalds is introducing the McSandusky Burger? It's a piece of old meat between fresh buns.

What time is curfew in the Penn State athletic dorms? When the big hand touches the little hand.

Did you say you played football at Penn State? No, I said I played under Coach Sandusky!

Jerry Sandusky walks into an elementary school just as classes are letting out for the day, when a teacher approaches him and asks, "So which child is yours?" Sandusky says: "I don't care, surprise me."

Jerry Sandusky, Tim Curley and Gary Shultz are on a plane with a bunch of Second Mile kids, when suddenly the plane careens out of control and is on course to crash. Curley yells out, "Here, there are only 3 parachutes!" "What about the kids?!?!" replies Shultz. Curley angrily replies, "Screw the kids!!!" Then Sandusky calmly asks: "Have we got enough time?"

What's the difference between Jerry Sandusky and a terrorist? Sandusky actually gets his virgins.

What the difference between Jerry Sandusky and acne? Acne waits until a boy is at least 13 years old before it comes all over his face.

What do Jerry Sandusky and evaporated milk have in common? Both are white and come in little cans.

Sandusky's favorite anagram for Nittany Lions: Tiny tan loins.

What kind of ice cream does Penn State serve at The Creamery? Bend and Jerry's.

How does Penn State separate the men from the boys?
- A) They don't, they look the other way
- B) Crowbars

What's the only University where you can major in a minor? Penn State.

They plan on repaving The Second Mile so it's no longer a dirt road.

If you call women who likes younger men cougars, do you call men that like young boys Nittany Lions?

And although this song came out while JoePa while still an assistant under Rip Engle, it seems to be a fitting legacy for him, and for those in State College who may have placed the football program above more important concerns.

In honor of the Beach Boys, one final joke:

What did the woman on the beach say to Jerry Sandusky? She said "Hey! You're in my son!"

And reading the following section, written a couple years ago, about Penn State keeping secrets now seems a little creepy.
Traditions & Opponent Perspective
One would think a lion would stand so proud that traditions would be dripping off their mane. However, when talking with the Nittany Lion fans one thing was apparent, if they have rituals and traditions they aren't willing to share. Correction, they are willing to say they have traditions, just not willing to expound on what these "secretive" traditions entail. For instance:
  • "The Creamery" - no response, but we've since learned it's an Ice Cream place on campus
  • "Old Main" Again, ?
  • "Cowbell Guy" Yet another, ?
  • "Mellon Bank Blue Buttons" Huh?
When pressed for more details, I was met with mere silence. Therefore, those must be the "Secret Traditions."
Now, for the more public traditions:
  • Blue and white, plain and simple, have been the trademark of PSU since 1890 although Black and Pink were their original colors.
  • Penn State's athletic symbol, chosen by the student body in 1906, is the mountain lion which once roamed central Pennsylvania. Penn State is believed to be the first college to adopt the lion as a mascot.
  • Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, the lion was designated as a Nittany Lion. In regional folklore, Nittany was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed. A later namesake, daughter of chief O-Ko-Cho, who lived near the mouth of Penn's Creek, fell in love with Malachi Boyer, a trader. The tearful maiden and her lost lover became legend and her name was given the the stately mountain.
  • With Beaver Stadium and Mt. Nittany looming in the background, "Paternoville" takes life. The students gather, set up tents and camp-out sometimes as far out as 6 days before their weekend game, all to receive a good spot in line to purchase tickets. HIPPIES!
  • The team rides in blue and white buses to the stadium, and walks through fans lined up on either sides of the walkway to enter.
  • The starting QB rides in the front of the bus with Paterno and gets off the bus to the stadium first. Last week JoePa's seat was empty.
  • The band plays the "Hail to the Lion" fanfare to the four corners of the stadium and the Drum Major does a flip.
  • Similar to our "O-H" "I-O" you will hear "We are" with "Penn State" as the response.
  • A recent tradition started in the last several years at Beaver Stadium has the student section hopping and singing in unison to the thumping dance number "Zombie Nation."
  • During home games, late in the 3rd or early 4th quarter the band plays, "Hey Baby" as the crowd sings along.
  • The Lion mascot does pushups for each point PSU scored throughout the game.
  • If Penn State is victorious, the victory bell is rung.
  • Lest any of us forget the tradition of the Lion roar. Or The Rail.
And now, the most confusing tradition stumbled across, "The drumline coming out to a tap then playing the 'juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi, juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi, juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi' while the band runs out yelling 'Ohhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhh LET'S GO STATE.'"
