Behind The Numbers
First Half Offense
Through 3/4 of the 2010 regular season, Ohio State has a team that is statistically superior to any offense of the Tressel era. Some, including those of us in the preview staff, would be quick to remind you that other offenses may have been better. We all know for instance that the 2006 offense left a great deal of potential on the field simply because they didn't have to score in the 2nd half of most games. The same is true however of the 2010 offense. This squad is better than the statistics show... seriously.
Score By Quarter...1...2...3...4
Ohio State_______114_140__61__63
Opponents_________42__34__12__34
Difference________72_106__49__29

Clearly, the Buckeyes bludgeon their opponents bloody in the first half and coast in the second, especially on offense, especially in the 2nd quarter. How good are the Buckeyes in the 2nd quarter?
  • The best quarter for any team in the Big Ten (not-wearing-Scarlet-and-Gray) is the 2nd quarter for the Michigan State Spartans. The Green and White best their opponents by 74 points in that quarter. The Buckeyes are 32 points better.
  • Purdue's defense is at their best in the 2nd quarter. In fact, only 3 Big Ten defenses are better in that quarter (one of them being the Buckeyes). Purdue has given up 7 touchdowns all year in the second quarter. Ohio State scored 4 of them.
  • The only other unit in the Big Ten that sees more than 120 points scored in one quarter is the Michigan defense (122).
  • Iowa is the conference's 2nd best first-half offense, averaging 19 points per opening stanza. The Buckeyes are averaging 28.2 points per first half.
First Quarter Defense

Apart from the gawdy first half offense, what jumps off of the table above is the first quarter defense. Yes, the 3rd quarter defense is impressive, but that's to be expected from the Buckeyes. It will be interesting to see if this holds true this week, as the Nittany Lions are a slow-starting team, having been outscored by 11 points in the first quarter this year. They've outscored their opponents in every other quarter.

As for the Buckeyes, four Big Ten defenses fare better in the 1st quarter than the Silver Bullets. One defense (Iowa), has a better 2nd quarter (by 1 point). While some of this can be laid at the feet of the special teams play, anyone who's seen the Buckeyes play can tell you that the Ohio State defense starts slowly this year.

Oddly, one of the 4 defenses who best the Bucks out-of-the-gate is Northwestern. They have given up only 19 points in the first quarter this year. Unlike the Buckeyes, the Wildcats go on to allow 64 points in the 2nd quarter.

In the 2nd half, it's a different story. The Silver Bullets are 50% better than the 2nd best 2nd half defenses. The Buckeyes have given up only 46 points in the 2nd half of games this year, while Iowa and this week's opponent, Penn State, have given up 69. All other Big Ten teams have given up 90 or more points in the 2nd half thus far this year.

Better Than You Think

That last fact might surprise some people, but not likely BPers who have made it this far into the preview. The Penn State defense is actually quite respectable this year. Having already played Iowa and Michigan, and with Alabama also on the slate, the Nits have played a tougher line-up of offenses than have the Silver Bullets. Conventional stats are thus hard-pressed to provide a means of comparison. Fortunately, the BP preview team has DSA. For an explanation of what follows (if you need one), consult earlier previews.

Differential Statistical Analysis (DSA)

The following differ slightly from what you see elsewhere as BtN always discards stats compiled vs. FCS competition, which includes the Nits' game vs. the Penguins.

This might be the only team in the Big Ten that has even so much as shared a title with the Buckeyes in the past 5 years, but the 2010 version is not in the same league, metaphorically speaking. The Buckeyes are better in every single metric, both Traditional and DSA.

As always, the Traditional and DSA numbers are combined to form a numerical "prediction" for the outcome:

The Lighter Side
"Just look at em. Mmm hmm. Look at those boys jumpin' around like they just won the Rose Bowl. Now, dammit, Bo, I want you to look at this!"
"I can't do it, Woody. I... It's..."

"It's a damned shame, is what it is! 65 points to Illinois? Illinois! Why, it took the Illini 8 damn years to score that many points against my first teams at Ohio State, mmm hmmm."

"I know Woody, I know. Hell, in the '70s my Michigan teams gave up 978 points for the decade. For the DECADE, Woody! This Rodriguez fellow has given up 982 points in three damn years! If I wasn't already dead, I don't think my heart could take this!"

"65 points! Why, it took 5 daggum games for Ohio State to yield that many points this season. You need to do something, Bo. This is not what Michigan's about."

"What can I do, Woody? I've been dead for 4 years now. I had nothing to do with this."

"What can you do about it? Dammit, Bo, you go down there and you haunt this Rodriguez fellow. You knock stuff off his walls. You haunt him, dammit! That guy has got to go!"

And so it was that Bo Schembechler was once more called in to service to save a program teetering on ridiculous. Sometimes a win isn't really a win.

Let's take a quick look back on the Preseason AP Poll
1) Alabama - As Woody and Bo were just discussing, maybe defense matters. It's not as if Alabama has abandoned the concept, but losing 9 of 11 starters has its down side.
2) Ohio State - Well, what can you say? Voters love hating on Ohio State. It's hard to understand how the Buckeyes aren't the highest rated one loss team in the nation, though, one can understand them being behind Wisconsin - the team that beat them. But, Stanford and LSU? Laughable.
3) Boise State - Meh. I suppose the only good news on this front is Boise State just got jumped by TCU
4) Florida - Seriously. They were rated #4 preseason.
5) Texas - Yeah, 5. One voter thought they were the best team in the nation.
6) TCU - Give the 5 teams directly above TCU's schedule and they'd be undefeated too. Color me unimpressed.
7) Oklahoma - Like Texas, some voter thought these guys were the best team in the land.
8) Nebraska - OK, not a bad pick, really.
9) Iowa - This pick didn't look terrible either, but the Hawkeyes have dropped two already and still have Ohio State to play. They should have lost to Indiana. Unfortunately, Lester Hayes used up the last of the stick-um way back in 1980.
10) Virginia Tech - Two words. James Madison.

If there is a stronger argument against preseason polls, I'd like to hear it. In any event, BCS haters, this is your year. Ironically, it's a year where the little guy has its best shot at the championship game that stands the best chance to make the big school powers say, "Hmm. You know, a playoff doesn't seem so bad all of a sudden." Once that happens, Boise State and TCU or the like become the NCAA basketball equivelant of Gonzaga. Sure, they're good enough to win a game or even two over traditional big time schools. But, the chances that they beat legitimate powers in successive weeks is, frankly, poor. Like Michigan against Illinois - sometimes a win isn't really a win.

Sometimes a win is a win, though. Joe Paterno has won his 400th game - a comeback win against the Northwestern Wildcats. One wonders if Paterno has any idea this occurred. I suppose congratulations are in order nonetheless. So, congrats, JoePa. Now, go back to sleep. You're not going to want to see the beat-down that's going to happen this weekend. You remember that recruit you last went to visit? A kid by the name of Terrelle Pryor? Yeah. He's all grown up now.
Traditions & Opponent Perspective

One would think a lion would stand so proud that traditions would be dripping off their mane. However, when talking with the Nittany Lion fans one thing was apparent, if they have rituals and traditions they aren't willing to share. Correction, they are willing to say they have traditions, just not willing to expound on what these "secretive" traditions entail. For instance:
  • "The Creamery" - no response, but we've since learned it's an Ice Cream place on campus
  • "Old Main" Again, ?
  • "Cowbell Guy" Yet another, ?
  • "Mellon Bank Blue Buttons" Huh?
When pressed for more details I was met with mere silence. Therefore, those must be the "Secret Traditions."

Now, for the more public traditions:
  • Blue and white, plain and simple, have been the trademark of PSU since 1890 although Black and Pink were their original colors.
  • Penn State's athletic symbol, chosen by the student body in 1906, is the mountain lion which once roamed central Pennsylvania. Penn State is believed to be the first college to adopt the lion as a mascot.
  • Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, the lion was designated as a Nittany Lion. In regional folklore, Nittany was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed. A later namesake, daughter of chief O-Ko-Cho, who lived near the mouth of Penn's Creek, fell in love with Malachi Boyer, a trader. The tearful maiden and her lost lover became legend and her name was given the the stately mountain.
  • With Beaver Stadium and Mt. Nittany looming in the background, "Paternoville" takes life. The students gather, set up tents and camp-out sometimes as far out as 6 days before their weekend game, all to receive a good spot in line to purchase tickets. HIPPIES!
  • The team rides in blue and white buses to the stadium, and walks through fans lined up on either sides of the walkway to enter.
  • The starting QB rides in the front of the bus with Paterno and gets off the bus to the stadium first.
  • JoePa coughs before he leads the team in running out onto the field (this sounds a bit more like mojo as opposed to tradition to me.) He sometimes does something else as he's running off the field.
  • The band plays the "Hail to the Lion" fanfare to the four corners of the stadium and the Drum Major does a flip.
  • Similar to our "O-H" "I-O" you will hear "We are" with "Penn State" as the response.
  • A recent tradition started in the last several years at Beaver Stadium has the student section hopping and singing in unison to the thumping dance number "Zombie Nation."
  • During home games, late in the 3rd or early 4th quarter the band plays, "Hey Baby" as the crowd sings along.
  • The Lion mascot does pushups for each point PSU scored throughout the game.
  • If Penn State is victorious, the victory bell is rung.
  • Lest any of us forget the tradition of the Lion roar. Or The Rail.
And now, the most confusing tradition stumbled across, "The drumline coming out to a tap then playing the 'juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi, juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi, juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi' while the band runs out yelling 'Ohhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhh LET'S GO STATE.'"
