Eric Frantz of JJHuddle.com is reporting that a date has been set for the Ohio North-South Classic. It will be played Fri., April 23, at Ohio Stadium, the day before OSU's spring game.

This creates what could be a good weekend of football in Columbus in April and could also mean more OSU signees playing in the in-state all-star game.

According to a source close to the situation, the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association?s annual North-South Classic will be held April 23 at Ohio Stadium. The game will be played the day before Ohio State?s annual Scarlet and Gray Game.

Right now no time has been set, but the organization is looking at the potential of having the game kick off at 7 p.m. Usually, the game is played during the day.

Also, look for more BCS-type talent to be on display. The last couple years, since the North-South game and the Big 33 game have been played on the same day, most of Ohio?s top tier talent has gone to Hershey to compete against Pennsylvania?s best. This year a play will be made to keep some of that talent at home and in the North-South game. The Big 33 game also won't be contested until June 19, so there is no conflict.
Teams should be selected and finaled in early January.

The North-South Classic is the oldest high school football all-star game in the country.

Ohio State recruits Darryl Baldwin (Solon), J.T. Moore (Boardman), Tyrone Williams (Shaw) and Verlon Reed (Marion-Franklin) will headline a group of 13 future Big Ten players, including five headed for Michigan and three going to Wisconsin.

It is possible a fifth future Buckeye could be in the game if Cleveland Glenville's Christian Bryant, currently undecided, picks the Buckeyes.

North-South all-stars will play on eve of OSU's spring game

There is no high school football all-star game in the country older than Ohio's North-South game. This year's game will be No. 65.

Though organizers do pitch the longevity and star-studded history of the event, they acknowledge it was beginning to show its age to the point where it needed a face-lift.

"We're trying to catch up with Joneses," said North-South game coordinator Ed Terwillinger, who is head coach at Olentangy. "We're trying to bring some punch back. We've fallen behind some other all-star games."
In order to bring back the crowds and attract the best players, Terwilliger and his staff have moved the game from the second weekend in June to April 23, the eve of Ohio State's spring game. The site remains Ohio Stadium.

The North-South game no longer will conflict with the Big 33 game, an all-star game pitting Ohio vs. Pennsylvania players in Hershey, Pa. Now, players from Ohio can play in both games if they want.

High school football: All-star game moves to spring

The Ohio North-South Classic high school all-star football game has been moved up in an effort to avoid a scheduling conflict with the Big 33 game, which has led to diluted talent pools for both games recently.

The North-South game will take place April 23 in Ohio Stadium, the day before the Ohio State Scarlet and Gray game.

"The enthusiasm we've had for this change is like, wow," said Olentangy High School coach Ed Terwilliger, the game's coordinator for the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association, whose convention started yesterday.

Area players to be in North-South game

The 65th annual North-South Classic will be April 23 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

Nine area high school football players are among the 72 who were selected to play in the game, which is the longest running high school all-star game in the United States.

North Canton Hoover running back Erick Howard and Wadsworth wide receiver Anthony Schrock, both University of Akron recruits, were selected for the North.

Other area players on the North squad are Garfield running back Tyson Gulley (Syracuse recruit), Buckeye defensive lineman Kelton Keller (Eastern Michigan), Massillon center Jeff Myers (Toledo), Canton McKinley linebacker Jewone Snow (West Virginia), Walsh Jesuit linebacker Cameron Ontko (Wisconsin), Highland running back Aaron Maslowski and Ravenna wide receiver Parnell Taylor.

Ohio State recruits Darryl Baldwin (DL, Solon), Christian Bryant (DB, Cleveland Glenville), J.T. Moore (DL, Youngstown Boardman) and Tyrone Williams (WR, Cleveland Shaw) will play for the North, and Verlon Reed (QB, Columbus Marion-Franklin) will play for the South.

Hannibal River defensive back/quarterback Dylan Potts, a UA recruit, is on the South team, along with Kent State recruits Roosevelt Nix (DL, Reynoldsburg) and Mark Fackler (DE, Kenton). KSU also has one recruit on the North team, Poland Seminary defensive back Luke Wollett.

Highland coach Tom Lombardo will coach the North and Mark Crabtree of Dublin Coffman will coach the South. Ravenna's Jim Lunardi is one of the five North assistant coaches.

Southern (Ohio) speed?

On a night of firsts, the team representing the lower half of the state in the 65th annual Ohio North-South All-Star Classic eked out a 23 ? 20 victory by sticking to some tried and true football axioms. The geneses introduced for this years? game included moving it from a summer date to the spring, playing it on a Friday night, and scheduling it the night before the annual Ohio State spring game. All of which (in this writers opinion) should become embedded into the traditions of this the nations longest running high-school football all star game. Not the least of which is playing the game on a Friday night. I mean, isn?t that a federal law for all high school football games by now?
