Behind the Numbers
Wouldn't it be fun to look behind the numbers of the Bobcat's loss to the Toledo Rockets last weekend? Wouldn't it be fun to revel in the Rocket's incredible 2 and 5 yard scoring drives after Boo Jackson interceptions? Of course that would be fun. But this is Behind the Numbers. We don't do fun.

Instead, let's taking a painful look back at the 2008 game against Ohio. Why, you ask? Because sometimes the best way to enjoy a nice cold dish of vengeance is to let it stew.

First, let's be clear: The Buckeyes owe the Bobcats a whipping in a Big way. That game in 2008 was the biggest underperformance in a year that marked the biggest season-long underperformance in many years for the Buckeyes. It was the first indication that the 2008 Buckeyes were but a shell of a shadow of what they should have been.

As bad as that season was though, the Ohio game was worse. The following are national rankings in some DSA metrics for the two teams from 2008.
TEAM_________DSO___DTO___DSD___DTD___DSC___DYC
OHIO__________91____83____76____46____90____65
OHIO STATE____28____59_____5_____7_____9____22

Where:
DSO = Differential Scoring Offense
DTO = Differential Total Offense
DSD = Differential Scoring Defense
DTD = Differential Total Defense
DSC = Differential Scoring Composite
DYC = Differential Yardage Composite
Not very close, right?

26-14

Ohio led 14-12 entering the 4th quarter.

26-14

Ohio was 9 for 17 on 3rd down while the Buckeyes were 5 for 15.

26-14

Ohio had 4.7 yards per carry while the Buckeyes floundered to 4.1.

And the score was 26-14 (or was that already mentioned?)

Who Does #2 Work For?

Terrelle Pryor was 0 for 2 on the day. Granted, the Bobcats recently held another QB to an 0-fer day; Mitch Allen, the quarterback for Wofford. Something in the air (oxygen?) suggests that #2 won't be 0 for 2 on Saturday. And when the day is done, the Bobcats will no longer be ranked #2 in Pass Defense. Wofford indeed.

Served Cold

Two years and 12 days after that awful September day, the Buckeyes get to step back on the field against the Bobcats again. They get to hear the Bobcat fans finish every O-H-I-O with a petulant "U". The Buckeye fans get to hear the green clad Fredo's chirp about how well the Bobcats played last time.

When they do, think on all of the facts presented above. Think about how horribly the Buckeyes underperformed last time. Think about how sweet it will be to put the Bobcats in their place. Then, in the 4th quarter (if not earlier), you will get to watch Fredo Fans file forlornly out, feigning disinterest as they try (and fail) to forget the fiasco.

One other "F" word comes to mind when it comes to Fredo of course.

It's time to take him Fishing.

The Lighter Side
Fifty Three to Ten. That's what the Ohio State-Miami score might have looked like if Tressel was sporting a team which had a typical Tressel-team special teams unit and if Ohio State punches it in on those drives where they settled for 20+ yard Field Goals. Tack on a thirty-some yard FG that was missed and add 7 more for the last drive, and you're looking at a 63 - 10 game. Of course, this is the score when viewed through the most scarlet of lenses. Fact is, Miami had a couple of drives where they shoulda coulda woulda scored seven points- the most notable of which resulted in Cam Heyward's 80 yard INT return after first and goal at the 6. So, we'll go ahead and take 36 - 24 without worrying too much about what might have been if all the breaks went the Buckeyes way.

However, the aforementioned Special Teams have simply got to get better. Ohio State's defense has been outstanding in the two games the Buckeyes have played. They have pitched a shutout against Marshall, and gave up just 10 points to Miami. Ten points in two games. That's pretty darn good. The Special teams? Oh, they've given up 21. Takes some of the shine off solid kicking from Devin Barclay, a solid return game of Ohio State's own (hats off to Jordan Hall for keeping those legs pumping and to Jamaal Berry who was a turf monster (ahem.. teammate) away from housing a return, and not far away from a second), and a blocked FG of their own from Torrence. I suppose I'd rather be complaining about that than about an offense which can't manage more than a lousy 16 points against former President James Madison, or a defense that affords nearly 50 to a Big XII squad that struggled with Utah State.

Bringing us to the national scene. First up, "It was just Marshall." Gosh, I'm no game day studio guy, but Marshall looked pretty good against a ranked West Virginia. In fact, Marshall was a freshman's fumble away from icing that game. It's a shame they couldn't hold on, but the nation saw it none the less (it having been a Friday night game), and Ohio State looks the better for it. I mean, they're still not Florida A&M, but they're still pretty good, I think.

Boise State, on the other hand, has to be wondering if they're in trouble. Their big signature win of 2010 sort of looks like a non-doctored photo of Kim Kardashian now. Decent, but not all it's cracked up to be. Which reminds me, maybe the Beavers can get it done after all. Might be sloppy, but I'll take it. Number 5 Michigan falling to Appy State was still a bigger loss, but James Madison over Virginia Tech seems a larger blow to a whole conference. The ACC might beat the Big East in the race to lose its automatic BCS bid. Dreadful. Just plain dreadful. Miami, as much as I hate to say it, may well be the class of the conference now. Of course, this is what ACC brass expected when they stole the Canes from the Big East. But, these aren't yet those Canes. That may have been the lowest scoring Wake Forest-Duke Basketball game we'll see in some time.

Kick Hitters:

Denard Robinson has looked good. There's no denying it. He's still not a 25+ carry a game guy. By the time November rolls around, Robinson may be held together with staples and tape.

Umeyer @TTebow - "We miss you so much, can you petetion for another year or 10 of eligibility?"

Say what you will about Tennessee, but I have to say - that was the cleanest, most well groomed, group of football players I've ever seen. I don't know what they're doing down there post Kiffin, but Derek Dooley sure has 'em looking, and smelling good.

Speaking of Kiffin, I've sort of forgotten about USC.

Bama beat Penn State, and they look like a machine on the ground. But, to their credit, the Nits shot themselves in the foot more than Bama held them. You'll get that with a freshman QB playing the No. 1 team in the country, on the road, at night, on National TV.

As for next week, the Buckeyes get the Ohio Bobcats. The Bobcats will play like this is their Rose Bowl and Ohio State will guard against sleep walking. We've seen this before and it can get ugly. There's little question this Buckeye team is several trademark symbols better than little brother. Let's just hope the Buckeyes remember what happened the last time they were slow to roll out of bed when Team Solich came a drinking... I mean... to town. The lighter side would go further in making fun of Ohio this week, but there's little hope this piece could be more impressive than what you'll likely see from ORD. Go get em, brother!
Traditions & Opponent Perspective
Ohio football, like the school itself, is rich in traditions. Some Ohio football traditions include:

The Bobcats - It may come as some surprise that the name "Bobcats" is not as old as Ohio football itself. Up until 1925, the team was known simply as the "Green and White," the school colors. Eventually, it was determined that Ohio's athletic teams needed a nickname. As it would do on several occasions, Ohio brass put it up to a contest to determine what the nickname should be. Proposed by Hal H. Rowland of Athens (And Ohio Alum), it is said the "Bobcat" won as it has a reputation for being a sly, wily, and scrappy animal. Rowland won a $10 first prize for the winning proposal which was officially adopted on Dec. 7, 1925.

Colors - Originally, the unofficial colors of Ohio university were blue and white. However, in 1896, a newly hired football coach, Samuel McMillen, asked that Ohio change the colors worn by the football team to those of his alma mater, Dartmouth. Put to a campus-wide student vote, the olive green and white colors were indeed adopted. The green has evolved since then, becoming the darker "hunter" green we are familiar with. Interestingly, McMillen never coached a game for Ohio University. It would seem personal problems prevented him from traveling to Athens in the fall of 1896.

Mascot - The Bobcat mascot first appeared at Ohio's Homecoming game against Miami on Oct. 22, 1960. Wearing a bright green sweater and a baseball cap on top of his paper mache head, the Bobcat was a gift to all of Ohio University from the men of Lincoln Hall. Traditionally, the cheerleader who wore the costume also lived in Lincoln Hall.

Rufus the Bobcat -The school mascot is a fierce yet friendly looking Bobcat that is always wearing an Ohio jersey with a number "1" on the back. On September 2, 2006, Rufus was unveiled as the new mascot among great fanfare and atop a Harley Davidson.

The name "Rufus" was a popular choice as it refers to the species name for the bobcat, Lynx rufus. There also is a connection with Rufus Putnam, who presided over the meeting to form the Ohio Company of Associates that resulted in the founding of Ohio University. In 1926, Putnam, who was on the first board of trustees for the University, was honored with the naming of Putnam Hall.

Live Bobcat - Rufus, however, is simply a symbolic mascot for a live Bobcat. In 1983 in a contest held by John and Liz Gillam, "Sir Winsalot," owned by Ohio University graduate and Columbus resident Richard Widdis, became the school's official mascot.

Sir Winsalot called the Columbus Zoo home until his death. Waddis replaced him with a new cat, named "Paws." Paws, like Sir Winsalot calls the Columbus Zoo home and my be seen in the "North America" section.

The Ohio University Marching 110 - "The Most Exciting Band in the Land" is widely regarded as one of the best in the nation and was ranked by Link Magazine in 1996 as one of the Top 10 college marching bands in the nation. They perform at every Ohio home football game and have marched at other events such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and numerous NFL games.

Ohio's Fight Song - "Stand Up and Cheer" Since the early 1900s, and based upon a melody originally composed by Paul McNeely, "Stand Up and Cheer" has been used to inspire the team and crowd at Ohio sporting events.
Stand up and cheer,
Cheer loud and long for old Ohio,
For today we raise
The Green and White above the rest.
Our teams are fighting
And they are bound to win the fray.
We've got the team,
We've got the steam,
For this is old Ohio's day!
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Ohio's Alma Mater song - "Alma Mater, Ohio" was the result of a special contest in 1915 entered by persons from all over the United States. Kenneth S. Clark, a graduate of Princeton University, submitted what would become the school's song, winning the $150 first prize.
Alma Mater, Ohio
Alma Mater, brave and fair!
Alma Mater, we hail thee,
For we own thy kindly care.
Alma Mater, Ohio
When we read thy story o'er,
We revere thee and cheer thee
As we sing thy praise once more.
Salute to the Students - Following every Ohio home football game, win or lose, Ohio football players head to the student section to thank the Bobcat's most rabid fans for attending.

The Cannon - After every Ohio score, an 1800s style military cannon is fired. When the Bobcats enter the field, the cannon shoots off a smoke "O" that can be seen for several minutes before fading into the air.

The "O-Zone" - The student cheering section at every Ohio men's football game. Widely regarded as the best student section in the conference.

Tail-Great Park - The park across from Peden Stadium is transformed for every home football game into "Tail-Great Park". The park features kid's games, live music, and tailgating everywhere the eye can see on game day.

Homecoming Parade - The annual homecoming parade at Ohio begins in downtown Athens and ends in the Peden Stadium parking lot just in time for the big game. Always on a Saturday afternoon, homecoming is always one of the highest attended games of the football season.

The Battle of the Bricks - Ohio's archrival is Miami University. "The Battle of the Bricks" is an annual all-sports rivalry competition between the Ohio Bobcats and the Miami RedHawks athletic programs. The name "Battle of the Bricks" evolved from each school's reputation of having a campus of red brick buildings. Each varsity athletic competition in which the Bobcats and RedHawks meet including tournament play is counted as part of the years series record. At the conclusion of each academic year, the school with the most varsity wins takes the trophy back to their campus for the following year.

The Battle for the Bell - Ohio also has a regional rival in Marshall University. The annual football game between Ohio and Marshall is called "The Battle for the Bell", with a traveling bell trophy as the prize for the victor. Ohio leads the all time series over the Thundering Herd. With Marshall's move to Conference USA in 2005 this rivalry game has been on hiatus. The series resumes this year, and Marshall is in fact the Bobcats' next oponent.

The Baker Cane - Celebrating his 100th birthday on October 7, 1995, President Emeritus Dr. John C. Baker returned to Ohio a cane that had been lent to him in 1956 by Carroll Widdoes, then head football coach, to speed his recovery from a broken leg. Dr. Baker believed that the Cane was university property. In any case, it came signify a commitment to "honesty and integrity" and the cane is displayed as a symbol of that commitment.
