Behind the Numbers
A Bit of History
Woe to you oh Earth and Sea
For the Devil sends the Beast with wrath
Because he knows the time is short

Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast
For it is a human number
Its number is six hundred and sixty six

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx5KnFr9xSk&feature=fvst"]YouTube - Iron Maiden-666 the number of the beast[/ame]

Ohio State has outscored TSUN 704-666 in games played at The 'Shoe.

2010 Numbers

Quick, which is better, Michigan's total defense or their scoring defense? If you answered that their scoring defense is better than their total defense it's probably because you've seen the NCAA rankings for these statistics.

Category...........TSUN Rank
Total Defense.........112...
Scoring Defense........99...

This is a classic case of a rank comparison (no pun intended) not telling you the whole story. Yes, Michigan's Total Defense is bad. There's no disputing that. But their Scoring Defense is even worse.

While Michigan's opponents gain 25.2% more yards against the Wolverines than against everyone else (Differential Total Defense = 1.252), they score 28.5% more points on Maize & Blue than they do on everyone else (Differential Scoring Defense = 1.285).

Conversely, Michigan's offense might be better than you think if you are just looking at the raw numbers (even if you include their game with UMass).

Team...............Scoring Offense
Ohio State.............39.64....
Michigan...............36.82....

This looks like a case of clear Buckeye superiority. Another look at the differential numbers shows the other side of the coin.

While the Buckeyes score 52.0% more than their opponents typically allow, the Wolverines score 52.4% more than their opponents have surrendered to everyone else. So by this more objective measure, the Maize and Blue have been slightly better than the Scarlet & Gray when it comes to point production; though the difference seems small when you consider how much more time the Michigan starters have spent on the field trying to outscore opponents who themselves are meeting with little resistance.

The numbers have more to say about this match-up, so let's look at all of them, both traditional and differential. As always, games against lower division teams are discarded, so the numbers for TSUN's game against UMass are not reflected here.

Comparisons

Michigan's offense is outstanding at moving the ball with differential numbers that are significantly better than the Buckeyes'. This translates into roughly equivalent point production, differentially speaking. This probably has a great deal to do with the fact that the Wolverines are 11th in the conference and one-hundred-11th in the nation in turnover margin. The Buckeyes on the other hand slipped to 7th in the nation and 2nd in the conference after a 2 interception (and no takeaways) day in Iowa City.

Defensively, there isn't much of a comparison to make. The Maize & Blue are bad and the Buckeyes are a shade below their usual elite status. That could change this week however. Going against an offense that has put up video-game-like numbers against some of their opponents, there is the distinct possibility that the Buckeyes could get their Differential Rushing Defense below that 0.50 threshold, which is a feat accomplished by only a few defenses of the past decade and 4 times by the Buckeyes (2002, 2003, 2005, 2007). The past 2 years were the first such consecutive pair under Tressel when the Buckeyes failed to get below 0.50 in DRD, so getting back in that range would be a welcome accomplishment for the Silver Bullets.

Overall, the slight statistical superiority of the Michigan offense is dwarfed by the massive actual superiority of the Ohio State defense. The composites thus show the Wolverines to be exactly what knowledgeable football fans think they are, a slightly above average team. The Buckeyes on the other hand are getting the Differential Scoring Composite (DSC) near the 3.0 mark, which is a mark they exceeded only in 2006 (3.110).

Prediction

As always, the traditional and diffential stats can be combined to provide a prediction for the game.

Team______________Yards_____Points
Ohio_State_______546-559_____50-51
Michigan_________325-352_____19-21

In 2 of the past 3 years, both teams have fallen short of the expectation provided by this type of analysis. But those low-scoring affairs were both in Ann Arbor, one in bad weather, both against offenses that Tressel knew the Buckeyes could stop.

With the game at home and against a good (but not great offense), look for the Buckeyes to match the point production called for above with time to spare.
The Lighter Side
For the second season in as many, Ohio State enters Michigan week off a 3 point victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes. Last season, Ohio State went to OT and won on the leg of Devin Barclay. This season, it was the legs of Terrelle Pryor who gained a first down on 4th and 10 only a play after a wide open Devier Posey would drop a TD pass he had just put on the money. After that first down, another key connection was thrown to Sanzo. A Boom TD and a defensive 4 and out .... and .. It's Michigan week.

Just like that, Michigan week is upon us. Coming into this season, Ohio State was thought to be one of the top teams in America. While several statistics on both sides of the ball suggest just that, Ohio State is rated 8th in this week's BCS standings. The biggest problem with the Buckeyes standing is a loss on the road to Wisconsin - a team which has established it's pretty darn good this season. Wisconsin, as it happens dispatched Michigan last week, 48-28.

Coming into this season, Michigan was .... what? It depends on who you ask, doesn't it? Ask a Buckeye and Michigan would be a team which is better on offense, but which had serious concerns in a young defense which had poor depth. Buckeye fans would say defense would kill Michigan in the Big Ten. Michigan fans, on the other hand, were blinded by offense. Some, admittedly, have voiced severe concerns about the state of the defense. Nonetheless, the loudest voice is that of the offense only. Emboldended early on by very strong performances by Denard Robinson against weaker competition, Michigan won early. The defensive problems were there, even then, but as the season has wore on ....

Defense. Both Ohio State and Michigan sport statistically good offenses. Michigan rates #1 in the Big Ten in total offense, while Ohio State rates #2. In scoring offense, Ohio State is 2nd while Michigan is 3rd. But, on defense, the difference between these two teams is vast. Ohio State sports the top defense in the Big Ten, Michigan the worst. Ohio State literally yields 2 entire football fields per game less than does Michigan. Points wise, Ohio State again appears atop the Big Ten standings while Michigan is a league 9th in that metric.

Defense. Ohio State's secondary has been a MASH unit this season. So has Michigan's. Still, Ohio State has established it has enough quality depth to still field one of the top defenses in the nation. Michigan's? Pfft. To read their boards and especially those which feature a ceartin dam-building scout correspondent, it's more important that the mighty Wolverines are .... not as good as Oregon, but could get there. Not as good as Oregon? Yeah, no kidding. Oregon is number one in the nation. Michigan is not ranked. Ironically, Michigan fans desire to be a team which Ohio State virtually stopped cold in the 2010 Rose Bowl. That's the goal, I guess. Big numbers, and then a punch in the face from Ohio State to end November.

Well, fine then. You got it. You think simply because Ohio State has won the last six Games in a row and 8 of Tressel's 9 that we're satisfied? You think that just because while you stumble around the cellar for a couple of seasons and while Ohio State has won or shared the Big Ten Championship 5 straight years we are going to forget who your people are? Do you think that just because Ohio State has been to BCS games in all but two of Tressel's seasons and for 5 straight years while your program is now at a point where you rush the field to celebrate bowl eligibility (and in a game where you gave up 65 friggin points!) that we're going to act like you nitwits did in the 1990s? Oh, no. No sir. You want to know why Ohio State is dominating you right now? We get it. This Game. We don't cheapen it by saying "Illinois is our real rival" or some such bull. Michigan is our rival. Period.

And beating Michigan is what it's all about. If Ohio State were to win the next 58 games against Michigan, I would feel just as strongly that the Buckeyes would have no choice but to beat your collective asses in the 59th.

No quarter.
No. Mercy.

When this season began, we had big plans for Ohio State. Among those plans has always been a win in The Game. Our best dreams for 2010 - beating Michigan - even in the light of the recent history - is still priority one. It has all lead to this. Time to send another Ohio State class packing with 4 pairs of Gold Pants.

Go Bucks! Beat Michigan!
Traditions & Opponent Perspective

1901nov9.jpg
  • Michigan Stadium. "The Big House." The Stadium's official capacity is 109,901, though football game attendance can exceed 113,000 when all is said and done. The reason that the number is 109,901? Fritz Crisler, the legendary Michigan coach, has a seat somewhere, which he would never reveal, and his spirit is supposed to be in attendance at every Michigan home game. The largest crowd in stadium history was 113,090 on September 4, 2010 for a game against UConn. This is also the modern NCAA record for people at a football game.
  • Michigan's football helmet is a highly recognizable icon in college sports. The famous "winged" design dates back to 1938 when Coach Herbert O. "Fritz" Crisler begin a new era in Michigan football. Even as helmets have evolved over the years, the winged design has remained the pre-eminent symbol of Michigan football.
  • Michigan does not have a live mascot comparable to Ohio's Brutus Buckeye. The Athletic Department has steadfastly maintained that such a symbol is unnecessary and undignified and would not properly reflect the spirit and values of Michigan athletics.
  • As early as 1861, the students and alumni began referring to themselves as "Wolverines." How the ferocious animal came be associated with the state and adopted as the university mascot remains a bit of a mystery, but there are several theories. You may explore the different theories by clicking on the link:

[*]In November 1896, the University of Michigan Band held its first rehearsal. The U-M Band gave its first public performance in 1897 at old University Hall for the Law School's annual observance of Washington's birthday. The first appearance on a football field was in the fall of 1898. At the Michigan-Ohio State University football game in 1932, the University of Michigan Band created the first "script Ohio" -- predating a similar formation now made famous by the OSU Band.
[*]The University of Michigan's fight song is The Victors, and it was written by student Louis Elbel in 1898 following the last-minute football victory over the University of Chicago that clinched a league championship. The song was declared by John Philip Sousa as "the greatest college fight song ever written." The song refers to the university as being the "Champions of the West". At the time, UM was part of the "Western Conference", which would later become the Big Ten Conference. During his Presidency of the United States , UM alumnus Gerald R. Ford was known to sometimes have "The Victors" played at various state and presidential functions in place of the traditional "Hail to the Chief".

- During half-time shows the band creates the Block M on the field.

- Women were admitted in the Marching Band for the first time in 1927.
- During the pre-game show the band plays the opponent school's fight song in addition to their own.

  • When the football players enter the stadium on game day they each slap the banner.
  • Trophy games:
    • Michigan plays Minnesota for the Little Brown Jug, which dates to 1909.
    • Michigan competes against Michigan State for the Paul Bunyan Trophy, which was introduced in 1953.
  • The cow bell. Usually a couple fans have cow bells and play a little tune on it and at the end everyone yells "Go Blue".
  • "Ohio State/Michigan Week" has grown beyond the football game to include the annual blood battle, which benefits the Red Cross, food collection for food banks, and spirit events such as banner contests. OSU and UM have turned the rivalry into an event that helps people across school lines.
The Rivalry

  • In honor of the 100th meeting between the schools in 2003, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives proposed a resolution to recognize Michigan and Ohio State as the greatest rivalry in sports history.

[*]The Ohio State/Michigan game has always been important, but it was not always the last game of Ohio State's season. This practice began in 1935 and, except for one year, the tradition has continued.
[*]The rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan can be traced back to a feud between their respective states which began in 1835. The state of Ohio and the Michigan Territory fought a bloodless conflict with one another in a border dispute known as the Toledo War. Some have proposed that the college football rivalry is a modern manifestation of this historical tension.
[*]The inaugural meeting between Ohio State and Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1897 was a blowout victory for the Wolverines, who posted a shutout 34-0 over the Buckeyes.
[*]Only three times in history has the matchup pitted the two against each other with perfect records on the last game of the regular season. The 2006 contest in the 'Shoe was the only time that the teams played each other as the top two teams in the polls; TSUN was #2, the Buckeyes held onto #1 after the 42-39 victory. In 1970 OSU (8-0) and Michigan (9-0) met in Columbus, with the Buckeyes winning 20-9. Ohio State went on to lose to Stanford in the Rose Bowl. Then in 1973 OSU (9-0) traveled to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan (10-0), and the game ended in a 10-10 tie. Controversially, Ohio State was selected as the Big Ten's candidate to travel to the Rose Bowl, where they defeated USC. Three other times (1902, 1906, 1933) the two teams met each other with perfect records in early season matchups.
[*]Michigan's longest winning streak in the rivalry is nine games, from 1901-1909. Michigan also went without a loss in the first 15 games (13 wins and 2 ties). Ohio State's longest winning streak is the current six game streak.
[*]Michigan's largest victory margin was in 1902, when it won 86-0. Ohio State's largest victory margin was in 1935, when it posted a 38-0 shutout. OSU's highest point total in a game was 50, which occurred in 1961 and 1968.
[*]Michigan has been shut out in 11 games in the rivalry. Ohio State has been shut out 26 times. The second meeting between the schools resulted in a 0-0 tie.
[*]Between 1933 and 1940, the losing team was shut out every year. The teams split the meetings 4-4, with a combined winning-losing score of 206-0.
[*]The 1950 contest, colloquially known as the "Snow Bowl," is perhaps the most famous game in the rivalry. Eighth-ranked Ohio State was scheduled to host the game on in Columbus amidst one of the worst blizzards on Ohio record. The Buckeyes, who led the Big Ten, were granted the option to cancel the game against Michigan, which would have, by default, given the Buckeyes the Big Ten title outright and won them a trip to the Rose Bowl. Ohio State refused, and amid howling snow and wind, in what was probably the most literal example of a "field position" game, the teams exchanged 45 punts, often on first down, in hopes that the other team would fumble the ball near or into their own end zone. Despite not obtaining a single first down, Michigan capitalized on two blocked punts, recovering one in the end zone for a touchdown and booting another one out of bounds for a safety. Michigan shocked the freezing Columbus faithful with a 9-3 victory, securing the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl berth. Heavy criticism of Coach Fesler's play calling led to his resignation and the hiring of Woody Hayes as his successor.
[*]The 1969 loss to Michigan initiated the legendary "The Ten Year War" between Hayes and Schembechler. Both teams used the game as motivation for entire seasons and after the initial win by Michigan, played dead even at four wins and a tie apiece. Hayes, aided immeasurably by the presence of two-time Heisman recipient Archie Griffin, had the upper hand during the first part of the war, in which Ohio State won the conference championship and went to the Rose Bowl four straight years, while Michigan won the final three. It was also an era in which through television Ohio State football again came to the forefront of national attention. During the "Ten-Year War" Ohio State and Michigan shared the Big Ten title six times. The "War" ended in 1978 when Schembechler won his final game against his mentor, 14-3, giving him a record of 5-4-1 against Hayes.
[*]The teams have evenly split the last eighty-four meetings (from 1926 to 2009), with 40 wins apiece and four ties.
[*]"Carmen Ohio" was written on the train ride home to Columbus following the 1902 contest, which saw Ohio State losing to Michigan 86-0. The lyrics and melody have remained largely unchanged since its conception.
[*]Although both football teams play in games for traveling trophies, there is no trophy for the Michigan-Ohio State game. However, if the Buckeyes win, each team member receives a pair of "Gold Pants," a small golden charm of football pants worn by football players on necklaces.
[*]The OSU campus seems to be more active for Rivalry Week than the U of M campus. However, the two schools hold a blood drive every year from November 1 until the day of the game on their respective campuses. Both teams take the "Blood Battle" seriously. This annual event is a competition between the two chapters to see who can collect the most blood. It benefits the Red Cross and is hosted by the Alpha Phi Omega fraternities at both schools. There is also a contest to see which campus can sign up the most tissue and organ donors in the Buckeye Wolverine Challenge for Life.
[*]For the ninth year, the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) of both schools will hold a Rivalry Run for Cancer. See Fiji Pike Facebook for more information and donations.
