Behind the Numbers
Ugh-ly

It is ironic that EMU used to be known as "Normal College", because normal in the statistical sense they are not. There is no way to sugarcoat it: comparing the Eagles to the Buckeyes is difficult.

Eastern Michigan's Opponents:
Average score vs. Eastern Mich. 37.00 - 20.67
Average score vs. everyone else 23.00 - 14.67
Ohio State's Opponents:
Average score vs. The Buckeyes 12.67 - 41.33
Average score vs. everyone else 28.00 - 19.60
So far, EMU is scoring more than their opponents allow on average, but when one considers their opponents' schedules, this is nothing to write home about. Defensively, the Eagles will be facing their first offense from a BCS-AQ conference, yet they languish at 108th in the nation in scoring defense, giving up 2 touchdowns per game MORE than their opponents score on average.

The Buckeyes on the other hand are giving up 2+ touchdowns per game LESS than their opponents score vs. everyone else and are scoring 3+ touchdowns per game MORE than the score their opponents surrender to everyone else. Clearly, the only number-related drama in this game will be the streaks that the Buckeyes will want to keep going.

36 and Over

After scoring more than 35 points only 3 times all of last year, the Buckeyes have opened 2010 with 3 straight games of 36 or more points. This marks the first time in the Tressel era that the Buckeyes have opened the season with such a streak. The Buckeyes have only had 3 consecutive games of 36 or more points on 2 other occassions in the past decade (2005 and 2006); neither coming at the beginning of the year. If the Buckeyes make it 4-in-a-row vs. EMU; it will tie the 2006 streak for the longest run of 36+ games in the Tressel era.

The Goal

It has often been lamented on Buckeye Planet's message boards that Ohio State has yet to meet Coach Tressel's goal of 200 yards rushing and 250 yards passing for any season. In fact, at no point in any season under Coach T has Ohio State averaged over 200 yards on the ground AND over 250 through the air... until now.
Ohio State Rushing Offense: 206.33
Ohio State Passing Offense: 254.33
Look for the Buckeyes to keep these averages going against the Hurons.

The Lighter Side
The difference between Ohio State and Ohio University was dramatically displayed on Saturday. While the display to which I refer did indeed occur on the football field, it wasn't the game itself. Simply stated, the 43-7 beat-down was little surprise. No. The differences between Ohio State and Ohio was best exemplified by Rufus' unprovoked assault on Brutus. At Ohio State, we root for the Buckeyes. At Ohio, you root against Ohio State. At Ohio State we don't give Ohio a great deal of thought. At Ohio, you plot assaults in front of 105,000 witnesses for a full year. That is patently absurd on its own merit, but a more disturbing element is also evident - your hatred of Ohio State is such that you're willing to commit a crime for it. Think about that - rather than simply being proud to be an Ohio Bobcat fan, you are willing to get arrested in an attempt to "show up" Ohio State's mascot. Of course, the execution of this ridiculous plot provides further evidence of the differences between Ohio and Ohio State. Rufus, manned by some douchebag from Hocking College, runs straight for an unsuspecting Brutus, intent on tackling the upholstery-headed student. When Rufus get there, what does he do? After a year of planning? On the edge of a year long dream.... He wiffs.
Exhibit A:
29gbj0p.gif

Ohio State, as embodied in Brutus, shook you off like a mere annoyance. Because, Ohio, that's what you are. An annoyance. You want Ohio State's respect? Take some pride in your own school. Judge yourselves on your own merits, and not as against what Ohio State has been able to achieve. The reason why whoever is playing Brutus would never conceive of tackling Rufus isn't because we're better people. It's because Ohio State stands on it's own merit. Our "looking good" doesn't rest on whether you look bad. Root for Ohio, or root against Ohio State. There's a difference. Until you "get that" you'll always be just another face in the crowd.

Frankly, the lighter side is relieved that there was something worth writing about this week. Ripping on the ACC, Big East and Michigan's continued struggles against D-IAA competition, can only take an article so far and you know when ABC selects Ohio State v. Eastern Michigan as it's 3:30 contest it's a bad week for football all the way around. Hardly a show-case event.

Or so we would think....

Oh, my Buckeye friends, don't think for one second that this game will be a runaway. No sir. Sure, you can't find a Eagles message board out on Al Gore's information superhighway (actually, I found one - the longest thread was 6 posts). Sure the last time Ron English was in the Shoe his defense kept it together as well as Lindsey Lohan. Don't let any of that fool you, because EMU brass have this to say:

LINK

Seriously? An 18-17 win over Tressel's first YSU team (1986, 2-9) gives you some degree of confidence? Beating a D-IAA team 4 times in 5 tries is something to hang your hat on? In five games against YSU you've commanded a combined score of 98-76. In two games against YSU Ohio State is a 2-0 and has a combined score of 81-6. Your 10-2 1987 team - the best team you've ever fielded - was a grand total of 15 points better than Tressel's Penguins, and you think this gives you "Tressel's number?"

Please. There's no way to sugarcoat this: Take your beating and your check and go away.
Traditions & Opponent Perspective
The Nickname
Prior to officially adopting the nickname "Eagles" on May 22, 1991, the Eastern Michigan teams were known as the Hurons. The name change was influenced by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights October 1988 report which suggested that teams with Native American logos and mascots drop those logos and mascots as the usage promotes racial stereotypes. "Eagles" was selected over "Green Hornets" and "Express." The name Hurons was the result of a contest sponsored by the Men's Union in 1929. A three person committee selected the name from many entries, including the runner up submission "Pioneers." Apparently the winning submission was proposed by two students, Gretchen Borst and George Hanner. Hanner may have been influenced by the Huron Indian tribe as well as his place of employment at the time, the Huron Hotel. Prior to the 1929 selection of Hurons, EMU had also been known as the "Normalites" and "Men from Ypsi." Prior to being named "Eastern Michigan" the school was as Michigan State Normal College and is, of course, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Eastern Michigan has also been called Normal College, and Michigan State Normal School.

"Swoop" The Eagle

One of five College Mascot's named "Swoop" (Utah, Eastern Washington, Miami (Ohio), and Emory), EMU's version is a bald eagle. Swoop's routine includes frequently taking a fighting stance where he attempts to poke his chest out as a show of confidence.

The Pride of the Peninsula

The Eastern Michigan University Marching Band is known as "The Pride of the Peninsula." It began in 1924. The band plays "Go Green" and the Fight Song (both reproduced below) during home pregame festivities along with performing during the tunnel entrance and a maneuver known as the "Floating E." After every rehearsal the band sings "Our Pledge."

The band travels to some football games and has performed at the University of Michigan, Michigan State as well as The Pontiac Silverdome and Rich Stadium in Buffalo. The Band also has performed in "America's Thanksgiving Day Parade" in Detroit. The band includes brass and woodwinds, but when it is slimmed down for Basketball it is "brass and sax"

Eastern Eagles Fight Song - The fight song:

"Eastern Eagles, hats off to you!
Fight, fight, fight for ole EMU.
Look to the sky, the Eagles will fly,
the bravest we'll defy.
...Rah,rah, rah!"

"Hold that line for ole Green and White.
Sons and daughters show your might.
So, FIGHT, FIGHT! for ole EMU
and vic-tor-y!"

EMU Alma Mater - EMU's alma mater is as follows:

Eastern, sacred Alma Mater to your name we shall be true.
Ever marching on to victory, we'll stand by to see you through,
Softly floating on the breeze, verdant green with white of snow,
This our banner we will carry in our hearts whe'er we go

Go Green - Also heard at sporting activities, "Go Green" is:

Go Green, roll up the score.
Go Green, let's get some more.
Raise a cheer for old Green and White.
Let's show them we came here to fight.
Go Green, vic'try we'll claim.
Go Green, let's win this game.
We'll always fight for old EMU.
Come on and let's go Green!

EMU Dance Team

Performing at all home football games, men's men's and women's home basketball games, women's home volleyball games, and some soccer games the EMU dance team can also been seen at some special events including, parades, pep rallies, gran opening and dance competitions.

EMU Cheerleading

The Eastern Michigan University Cheerleaders pride themselves in their goals to promote spirit and support for EMU. The squad is, of course, active at EMU sporting events but they are also active at local charity events and are considered to be strong ambassadors of the Athletic Department and University. As an ever present reminder of EMU's spirit, the group also conduct Cheer Camps for young fans.

Still, a horse[censored] decision.
Eastern Eagles Fight Song
- The fight song:

I hadn't seen those in a LONG time. Thanks.

EMU Dance Team
Performing at all home football games, men's men's and women's home basketball games, women's home volleyball games, and some soccer games the EMU dance team can also been seen at some special events including, parades, pep rallies, gran opening and dance competitions.

Uhhh... how do I say this? This was the "shapely" team when I attended. Maybe it's gotten better; however, it was hard to "raise morale" when seeing these gals before. If you know what I'm saying.

These weren't bad.

Edit: btw, if you scroll to the bottom of the emueagles link, you'll see the new (new to me at least) logo for the university: It says "Eastern Michigan Unviersity - Education First". I think that sums up what I've said elsewhere... athletics are being relegated to a very low level.

"there's no way to sugar coat it"

You're quite observant. It was not by design that that phrase shows up as often as it does. When we were drafting this piece, we thought it was pretty funny that so many of us had the same phrase in mind despite not having read another author's section before using it ourselves. The "lighter side" usage was intentional, however, playing off this coincidence.
