Boom is the fo-sho starter here. He has earned the job. He is fast. He has great vision. He can identify a hole. He can make the first man miss. His lowest YPC average all year was 2.4 against Illinois. His second lowest was in his first game ever against Youngstown State, with 3.4. Aside from that, he averaged 4.2 YPC or higher in every single one of his games all season. He can make a 1st and 10 at least a 2nd and 8, if not higher, every single time that he touches the ball. This will add to Pryor's comfort zone.
I'd like to see Brandon Saine take Brandon Smith's spot as the pass-catching FB next season. Jermil Martin should also factor into the running game as a blocking FB.
As for the true Freshman, Jaamal Berry and Carlos Hyde, only time will tell what their fates will be in the run game.

IMO the big wild card here is Jamaal Berry. I think we all have a pretty good idea of what Pryor and Boom are like. Boom should be great for us, he is an excellent player and will fit into our system well. Pryor is Pryor.
A guy like Brandon Saine could also see some time as FB maybe, maybe catching some passes here and there. Hopefully Carlos Hyde can get some playtime as a power-back type of guy.
But Jamaal Berry is one of those guys that could be a star... He could be Reggie Bush or he could be Mo Wells (no offense whatsoever to Wells, just hasn't been Bush version 2) or, most likely, something in between. But if he can scare defenses, I think he will play a huge role in this offense. If he is as good as we hope, we will just have so many more options.. Pryor + Boom + Berry, Pryor/Boom, Pryor/Berry, Berry as wideout, Berry going in motion, Berry just being an option for a 2-yard dumpoff (that could, at any time, become a 70 yard dumpoff).. It would just add a huge dimension to our running game.

My biggest concern is Hyde. I live in Fort Myers and used to live in Naples and have a close family friend whos son went to Naples High and we a had a Highschool kid as an employee last year who went to Naples High as well. They have all said the kid is a BEAST but his work ethic is a little suspect. I've only seen clips of the kid and his stats are good, all I can say is I hope he goes all out as a BUCKEYE. Gonna be a good next couple of years in the RB dept!!!

I just wonder how strong of a runner Berry is going to be. It seems to me that tOSU has had more luck with stronger backs instead of quick backs. Boom is a good combo of both...so was Beanie, and MoC. I'm hoping Berry can be like Pittman, and if that is the case, he is going to get a lot of PT next year I feel. Tressel never just sticks with one back for every play. And as far as Pryor...Vince Young was a 1000 yard rusher two years in a row...maybe Pryor can be as well.

One big difference is Berry will not often be asked to run into stacked fronts with 7 blockers & 7+ defenders.JXC;1380396; said:

Well they did do it with Mo Wells so I wouldn't put it past them...
Herron will be the #1 guy, and honestly I think Hyde will be the biggest impact new comer to the running back spot. Him and Perhaps Carter will be our freshman guys who step up IMO. Hyde will no doubt be that short yard back and inside the 5 yardline guy, much like Beanie in 06'. However, Hyde could be redshirted if they feel Berry is the better option.

When healthy, he's going to be a solid contributor, but Boom is fit to be a #1 tailback at this level. Many people don't realize that he has a ton of potential, and as I've said on other threads/boards, he's going to define himself as himself. In other words, he's not trying to be like anybody else. He's working on perfecting his style of football, which is running hard with little to no "dancing." Not that he doesn't have any moves, but his style allows him to hit the hole as hard as possible. Whether you support him or not, he's going to be better than most people anticipate.
As far as the incoming freshmen are concerned, I have been very impressed with their films. Hopefully, that translates well to the next level.

i almost hate to say it but i see a bit of mike hart in boom when he runs. they aren't really built quite the same, but boom runs low, he's tough as nails, and he holds on to the ball. i don't think his overall skill will top out at "Beanie" level, but i think he's going to be an amazingly consistent RB for us.
i know OSU fans are all about the bruiser types, but i'm just as content with a squirmy and tough "thumb" type RB who gets the job done
