The Lighter Side
I am guest writing the "Lighter Side" this week. I was asked on the condition that I pay proper respect to Penn State and their traditions and that I not make fun of Joe Paterno or his age.

When given those stipulations I have to admit - I almost pooped my pants. It was particularly disappointing as I was looking forward to using the word "antediluvian" in a sentence.

So I decided to talk about a topic that is a mystery to many. Just where is Penn State University?

The land on which the University sits is geologically complex and was formed between the Triassic and Permian in what is commonly called the Paternozoic period (part of the Jopanian era).

As it turns out, Penn State University is actually named PennSYLVANIA State University. So why don't they call it that?

It is because they don't want kids to know the school is located in Pennsylvania! And not just Pennsylvania - CENTRAL Pennsylvania. How is anyone going to recruit kids to play in central Pennsylvania? That's like West Virginia, but without the cool state song.

Fortunately it's not so hard to keep recruits in the dark. After all, the nearest airports are JFK and Quebec International. Half their Freshmen think Otto's Pub and Brewery is in downtown Manhattan and the rest are French majors.

If you listen to any of the ESPN talking heads you would think PSU is in "Happy Valley". But try finding Happy Valley on a map. It does not exist. (It is a depression era nickname for this supposed recession proof area.)

Per Wikipedia Penn State is located in Centre County Pa, lying in the State College "Metropolitan Statistical Area". (I used to live in a Metropolitan Statistical Area, but then my family moved to a County-Equivalent.) State College itself is a borough within the county and contains most, but not all, of the University. The rest is in College Township. I know this all sounds a bit confusing, but you can request clarification by writing directly to the school. Address your letter to Pennsylvania State University - in University Park, Pa.

If you look at a map you will see that the nearest major city to Penn State is Harrisburg - an hour and a half away. Harrisburg has two claims to fame: 1) Pam Beasley and Jim Halpert once went there on a weekend getaway. 2) It is an hour and 40 minutes from Philadelphia.

Little known fact: Philadelphia is also in Pennsylvania.

So what makes kids go to a school that is an hour and a half from the middle of nowhere?

Is it because the school was originally called Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania (it was renamed in 1862, not by JoPa, but by his eldest son). Is it because the band "Holy Mary, Mother of Bert" originated there? Is it because the State College Police Department takes free team pictures? Because players occasionally are allowed to personally clean Beaver Stadium? To hike nearby Mt. Nittany? Do they want to streak down Mifflin Road? See if their girl friend can crumble the Obelisk?

No. The reason has to be the Berkey Creamery.

Truth be known, I have been to ... wherever it is I was when I went to a Penn State game. And on the recommendation of a friend I visited The Creamery - an institution that serves over 750,000 hand dipped ice cream cones a year out of a single location. And it was good. It was very good (how can it not be good when the ice cream is four days from cow to cone?). But come on folks, how can you claim to have a serious football program if your ice cream tastes better than your nachos? (On the other hand, if you are a 140 pound Offensive Lineman what better way to bulk up than a steady diet of 14.5% butter fat?)

Little known fact: If Todd Blackledge went to the The Creamery and ordered one scoop of Hoary Joe Vanilla and one scoop of Primoridal Paterno Peach he would have to buy TWO separate cones. Because you can't mix flavors at The Creamery (a tradition that predates Wally Triplett).

Little known fact: Ben and Jerry of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (not to be confused with Ben and Jerry of Ben and Jerry's Frozen Pizza Rolls) "attended" Penn State. No, they didn't work at The Creamery. They didn't even attend class on campus. In 1974 they actually took a correspondence course in ice cream making. Do not ask me how this worked.

Along with learning a few little known facts, hopefully you now have some sense of where Penn State actually is. (Although if you really cared you could have found it in MapQuest much quicker than reading a page and a half of this drivel). And as already mentioned, I have been there - although where "there" was is still a bit of a mystery even to me. Which leads to a final note.

I will admit that some of my statements have the veracity of Nancy Pelosi speaking to Chris Matthews. But this one is factual. I took this picture at my hotel in Pennsylvania on my trip to ... wherever it is I was when I went to a Penn State game. I touched nothing in the room, it is as I found it. I don't know what it says about the people of the state and either their hygienic or recreational habits - although these are topics I now often contemplate. I leave it for your perusal ...
psutoiletbowl.jpg

I'm not sure what is more disturbing. The implications of the sign - or the thought that I might check in to a room and find that the lifeguard IS on duty.

Little known fact: The name "Beaver Stadium" evolved from the sobriquet given the coed-only south bleachers in the 1940s. (This fact is currently NOT documented in Wikipedia, but give me a day or two ....)
Traditions & Opponent Perspective

One would think a lion would stand so proud that traditions would be dripping off their mane. However, when talking with the Nittany Lion fans one thing was apparent, if they have rituals and traditions they aren't willing to share. Correction, they are willing to say they have traditions, just not willing to expound on what these "secretive" traditions entail. For instance:
  • "The Creamery" - no response, but we've since learned it's an Ice Cream place on campus
  • "Old Main" Again, ?
  • "Cowbell Guy" Yet another, ?
  • "Mellon Bank Blue Buttons" Huh?
When pressed for more details I was met with mere silence. Therefore, those must be the "Secret Traditions."

Now, for the more public traditions:
  • Blue and white, plain and simple, have been the trademark of PSU since 1890 although Black and Pink were their original colors.
  • Penn State's athletic symbol, chosen by the student body in 1906, is the mountain lion which once roamed central Pennsylvania. Penn State is believed to be the first college to adopt the lion as a mascot.
  • Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, the lion was designated as a Nittany Lion. In regional folklore, Nittany was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed. A later namesake, daughter of chief O-Ko-Cho, who lived near the mouth of Penn's Creek, fell in love with Malachi Boyer, a trader. The tearful maiden and her lost lover became legend and her name was given the the stately mountain.
  • With Beaver stadium and Mt. Nittany looming in the background, "Paternoville" takes life. The students gather, set up tents and camp-out sometimes as far out as 6 days before their weekend game, all to reveice a good spot in line to purchase tickets. HIPPIES!
  • The team rides in blue and white buses to the stadium, and walks through fans lined up on either sides of the walkway to enter.
  • The starting QB rides in the front of the bus with Paterno and gets off the bus to the stadium first.
  • JoePa coughs before he leads the team in running out onto the field (this sounds a bit more like mojo as opposed to tradition to me.) He sometimes does something else as he's running off the field.
  • The band plays the "Hail to the Lion" fanfare to the four corners of the stadium and the Drum Major does a flip.
  • Similar to our "O-H" "I-O" you will hear "We are" with "Penn State" as the response.
  • A recent tradition started in the last several years at Beaver Stadium has the student section hopping and singing in unison to the thumping dance number "Zombie Nation."
  • During home games, late in the 3rd or early 4th quarter the band plays, "Hey Baby" as the crowd sings along.
  • The Lion mascot does pushups for each point PSU scored throughout the game.
  • If Penn State is victorious, the victory bell is rung.
  • Lest any of us forget the tradition of the Lion roar.
And now, the most confusing tradition stumbled across, "The drumline coming out to a tap then playing the 'juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi, juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi, juckita, juckita, diggi, diggi' while the band runs out yelling 'Ohhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhh, ohhhhhhhhhhh LET'S GO STATE.'"
