2008 Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon

It is usually around the first week of Aug. It hasn't cost anything to go...but I believe it's been closed to the public the last couple of years.

Media only. :(

You can call the football office (there's a listed number on the official athletic dept. web site) for more info, but with all the increased National Championship expectations this season, the mega-hyped freshman class (espec. TP) I would very much doubt Coach T opens it back up to the public this year.

Having the third consecutive year for an "open" Night Practice / Team Autograph Event is probably your best hope & opportunity to see the team before the season kicks off. But even that's not a guarenteed event I'd guess.

Will OSU's Tressel guarantee a third-straight Big Ten title?

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Thursday, July 24, 2008
Big Ten football coaches will be grilled by the media today, July 24, at the conference's annual kickoff event in Chicago, and I'll go out on a limb and make a few predictions on what to expect.
? Ohio State will be picked as the preseason favorite, and Jim Tressel will make like Muhammad Ali and guarantee a record third-straight outright league title. Just kidding about that last part. Tressel, of course, will remind reporters how tough the Big Ten is from top to bottom, conveniently forgetting the recent fortunes of Minnesota, Northwestern and Indiana.

Big Ten coaches, stars invade Chicago
Michigan's Rodriguez sure to face questions

By MATT MARKEY and JOE VARDON
BLADE SPORTS WRITERS
CHICAGO - While Amway salesmen and hedge fund traders meet in conference rooms on the levels above, the football coaches and star players from the Big Ten will gather two floors below the busy street level at the Hyatt Regency Hotel here today, to give the football season its unofficial/official start. Each summer, the league hosts a two-day, preseason session with the media, and the Big Ten essentially takes over the lowest level of the sprawling convention center. Ohio State is expected to be the favorite to win this year's conference title when the Big Ten releases the results of its preseason media poll. The Buckeyes have won the last two league crowns outright, and shared the title the previous year.

Yeah, Right!!!

For anyone stupid enough to think Tressel is going to make some outlandish "guarantee" about winning an outright championship; I've got some beachfront property in Arizona that I would like to sell you. See photo:

Trust me. It really is beachfront property; the tide is just out in this photo. And to "seal the deal", I'll even through in a "just like new" SUV for free.

Ohio State football: Buckeyes sweep Big Ten preseason awards
Posted by Doug Lesmerises

You were expecting Northwestern and maybe a Minnesota tight end?

In news of the obvious, Ohio State was tabbed as the preseason conference favorite this morning in media voting released at the Big Ten media days in Chicago. And the Buckeyes swept the individual awards, as linebacker James Laurinaitis and running back Beanie Wells were named the preseason defensive and offensive players of the year.

Laurinaitis was both the preseason and postseason conference defensive player of the year last season. His repeat preseason choice follows mentor A.J. Hawk, who was named preseason player of the year in both 2004 and 2005.

This is the first time that a Big Ten team has swept all three categories in the preseason voting.

In other voting, Wisconsin was picked to finish second and Illinois third. The Big Ten only conducts voting for the top three places.

Last season, Michigan was picked to win the conference, followed by Wisconsin and Ohio State. That wasn't exactly right. The Buckeyes won the conference, Michigan tied Illinois for second and Wisconsin was fourth.

By the way, Laurinaitis, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and quarterback Todd Boeckman are representing the Buckeyes in speaking with the media today and tomorrow. It's no shock that Jim Tressel brought three seniors while Wells, a junior, was left at home. But since the Big Ten media days began, every Big Ten player who went on to win the Heisman, has attended media days. So Wells has a trend to buck.

Zanesville TimesRecorder: Controversy eluding OSU heading into Media Days

5 'yawner' questions facing Buckeyes

Media event officially kicks off season

Without Maurice Clarett's dirty laundry to rummage through or John Cooper occupying one of the hot seats, Ohio State has managed to take all the fun out of Big Ten Media Days, set for today and Friday in Chicago.

What are those of us attending the convention supposed to ask representatives of a program that appears to have it all?

There are precious few hot-button issues on a team that has 20 returning starters, the nation's No. 1 high school recruit and a coach who, when he isn't climbing the New York Times' bestseller list, could beat Michigan wearing his sweater vest as a blindfold.

Where is the air of mystery? A hint of controversy?

With the start of training camp still more than a week away, there isn't even much suspense when it comes to naming team captains. Quarterback Todd Boeckman, linebacker James Laurinaitis and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins are making the trek to Chicago.

Typically the Buckeyes don't trot players out for the Midwest media at this gathering unless they have big plans for them in a leadership capacity.

Most years, coach Jim Tressel has four captains. Speaking for all my colleagues on the OSU beat, it would be nice to see that honor go to free-spirited offensive tackle Alex Boone.

He wanted to kiss everybody in the interview room after last year's win at Michigan. (I passed.) Boone could end up being a more outrageous quote than his former sidekick, the equally outlandish Kirk Barton.

Tressel probably was too afraid to turn Boone loose in Chicago. All it would take to bring Media Day to its knees is someone asking the 6-foot-8, 330-pound lineman, "So, how are you guys going to avoid soiling yourselves in a third straight BCS title game?"

Somebody got their facts wrong.

ESPN - Buckeyes sweep Big Ten preseason awards - Big Ten

It marks the first time a team has swept all three awards since 1996, when Northwestern was the favorite, running back Darnell Autry the preseason Offensive Player of the Year and linebacker Pat Fitzgerald the preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Ohio State football: Updates from Chicago
Posted by Doug Lesmerises July 24, 2008

* Cornerback Malcolm Jenkins missed Ohio State's round of interviews today because his flight from New Jersey was delayed. Like most of the OSU players, he went home during this off week, so he spent much of his day trying to make it to Chicago. He'll be there for Friday's two-hour session of interviews.

Quotable coaches
Sometimes, the first day of the Big Ten meetings can be interminable. Eleven coaches, one after the other, getting up and droning on about how excited they are about the season, etc and blah blah blah.

There was some of that today, but there were plenty of spicy moments as well:

*** Tops among them was Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez. My colleague Bill Rabinowitz is working on a story for the paper, so I won't go into great detail, but Rodriguez addressed many of the issues he's dealt with over the past seven months.

I thought personally he said more than he should have said, but hey, it's great copy, so I'm not complaining. One thing of local interest was he said the toughest thing to deal with was the allegation of "eroding family values" leveled by outgoing guard Justin Boren, a Pickerington native who transferred to Ohio State.

Rodriguez opened with an ill-advised joke. In February, Purdue coach Joe Tiller got upset with Rodriguez stealing a recruit from him, referring to "a guy in a wizard hat selling snake oil." Today, Rodriguez said, "I've been working all summer on my snake-oil concoction that I've been trying to give to Joe."

*** Penn State octogenarian Joe Paterno got fed up with repeated questions about when he might retire. Finally, flailing his arms, he screeched, "I don't know! Do you want me to spell that for you?" And then he did.

*** Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald on the increased expectations his program faces now: "Back in 1993 when I arrived (as a player), if we would have had six wins, we would have had a parade down Central Street, shut it down and had a big purple party here in Chicago. And things are changed and I'm excited about that."

*** Illinois coach Ron Zook acknowledged his challenge now, after a surprise 9-4 season, was to make sure the Illini aren't a "one and done" team.

*** If you're looking for who might be this year's Illini-like Cinderella story, I personally think Michigan State is a team to watch. They return a pretty decent QB (Brian Hoyer) and a stud running back (Javon Ringer), but most important, they are a sound football team under a very good coach, Mark Dantonio, entering his second season. The Spartans are building.
