This morning's Women's World Cup semifinal from China was a shocker for the US team. They have been mostly dominant for the last decade, with only an occasional, close loss. Today Brazil, a team who the US beat in a friendly match in the US in June, clobbered our ladies 4-0. Unheard of. Really, the US team was never in the match. Few shots on goals, out run by Brazil, leaky defense, including an "own goal" and a misread by our goal keeper.
There was a big controversy about the coach's decision to substitute Brianna Scurry, Olympic heroine, in the goal for today. All the commentators could talk about. One will always wonder if doing so affected the entire team psychologically. In the short run we'll know Sunday in the consolation game against Norway. In the longer run, while we have presumably qualified for the Olympics or will, it will be interesting in seeing how the team psyche is affected by this drubbing, if at all. Also interesting will be to see how much heat the coach takes for not only the loss but for his controversial substitution.
In the world of professional sports, this team has been one of the more interesting to watch in recent years, along with the US softballers, womens golf, and other sports for women. (Better legs than the men, if nothing else ) Personally, I can only hope our team is not demoralized.
Go Bucks! Edit: Seems I got volleyball and women's soccer confused. Oh well, Hey...I'm an old guy. Don't hurt me. They all have decent looking legs.
