2005-06 Official Big Ten bball Thread

I didnt want to start an individual thread on just Iowa, so I figured I would start one one the whole big ten, and we can keep it going all season.

After having a chance to get some idea of what teams have in the early go of the season, I really feel we should finish in the top 3 of the big ten.

After today I think you have to put Iowa at number 1. They were really impressive, they shoot it well and they have some guys down low that can really bang.

Illinois didnt have a very good performance two days ago, but they have some experience from being up at the top the past couple years so look for them to be in the top 4.

MSU - where to start, they have played really bad their first two games. They lost to Hawaii(save the cramps story it was Hawaii), and they were losing to Chaminade in the second half. I think they will turn it around, but you never know, something just isnt right here. Maybe it will be a down year.

Us - I know we have not played anyone to gauge where we are at, but I think we should roll butler by Double digits and then maybe do the same to va Tech. With the addition of Lewis and Mayes this year and Dials down low and Butler to orchestrate things I think we could have a big year. I am thinking only about 8-10 loses.

I think the wildcard in the big ten is IND. They had some young talent last year and believe brought back most of their team. I know White is hurt right now, but when he comes back they could be strong.

Not sure about the rest of the Big Ten, but we will see over the next couple weeks. Also I think we will move into the top 25 here within the next 2 weeks.

Iowa frightens the hell out of me, frankly. Horner may be the best guard in the Big Ten - the kid won't shoot 1-10 every night, and his passes are still lasers. Normally I'd say a team with that many white boys was doomed...at this point I'd say they're in control of the conference.

at this point I'd say they're in control of the conference.

I think its a little early to say they are in control of the conference.....Ohio State, MSU and Illinois will all have something to say about that.

I still believe this race will come down to Ohio State and Michigan State...

We play Iowa just one time this year on the road on 28 Jan. We play Illinois just one time at home on 12 Feb. We do play MSU twice.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota forward Vincent Grier will miss four to six weeks with a broken bone in his left ring finger.

Grier broke the finger in Friday's season-opening 70-57 victory over North Dakota State and will be in a cast until at least Dec. 2.

Coach Dan Monson said Monday he hopes the senior forward will be able to get some playing time before the Big Ten opener Jan. 7 against Northwestern.

Grier will most likely miss at least three of the Gophers' four highest profile non-conference games: Nov. 30 at Maryland, Dec. 5 at Arizona State, Dec. 10 vs. UNLV and Dec. 14 vs. Alabama-Birmingham.

Grier was an All-Big Ten selection last year, scoring 17.9 points per game.

I saw Iowa pulled off a win over UK...now that's impressive

Yeah watched the whole game, UK didnt have the stregth inside and at times they really stuggled and so did Iowa. Iowa is one of those team that will win ugly. Also their big guy Henson/hanson got in foul trouble 3 minutes into the game.

Also in my original post I forgot about Wisky, they have a great coach and I wouldnt be suprised to see them up there at the end of the year.

Sparty lost a really close game, that was probably one of the best bball games I have ever watched. Neither team could stop anyone, If MSU is running on all cylinders they may be tough to beat, but they are always so inconsisten it will be hard to tell.

Iowa will be tough, they are easily a top 10 team in the country and I look for them to stay there all year.

Iowa is the clear #1 at this point.

MSU choked against Hawaii (IIRC they had 4 starters cramping up). Their performance against Gonzaga was extraordinary. We may be able to play better defense, but we will have to play out of our minds if they shoot like that during their visit to the Schott.

MSU struggled a lot early last year, and it only made them stronger. I do not think they are nearly as deep this year, but never count out izzo and sparty (they are sort of the opposite of the fball team, they struggle early, and are extremely clutch as the season winds down and march begins)

I haven't seen any other teams to comment. Was driving during the butler game :(

another good game from the spartans. The hawaii game was ugly, tho 4 starters were taken off the court with bad cramps. The gonzaga game was a pretty stellar performance of two heavyweights slugging it out.

Yesterday, MSU beat #8 arizona in overtime. Their european bigman (who plays PF) was pretty solid (unlike the gonzaga game where he missed a gamewinning 3 foot layup). Shannon Brown stepped up, Paul Davis was absolutely clutch (I don't think he missed a FT), and Drew Neitzel is doing a pretty good job running the team (unlike last year's frosh who looked lost).

Any of you who just saw the 2-2 record will get the wrong impression. They just proved they can hang with the zags and arizona, and they are only in november. If they continue to improve, like Izzo teams always do, they will be very dangerous in march.

Illinois really struggled in this one.....

(15) Illinois 55, Wichita St. 54Preview - Box Score - Recap
November 25, 2005
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP) -- Back in his home state, Warren Carter helped Illinois stay there a little longer.

Carter, a junior from Dallas, hit the winning layup with 1.3 seconds left to give No. 15 Illinois a 55-54 win Friday over Wichita State in the South Padre Island Invitational semifinals.
Illinois (4-0) advanced to Saturday's championship against Rutgers, which beat Kent State 55-52 in Friday's other semifinal.

"Warren made a good catch, took his time and made the basket," Illinois coach Bruce Weber said. "Its a great win for Warren."

The Shockers' Karon Bradley hit a 3-pointer near half court after Carter's basket, but officials ruled he released it after time expired.

Carter, who was open near the basket, scored the last of his eight points after receiving an inbound pass from Rich McBride with two seconds remaining. It was Illinois' second lead of the second half, after James Augustine's jumper with 4:46 left briefly put Illinois ahead 51-50.

"It could have been better if I was in Dallas and all my buddies were there, but it's still a good feeling though," Carter said. "The coaching staff did a good job of drawing up the play. Dee (Brown) came off the screen so of course the team is going to guard him because he is an All-American. I just got open."

Augustine led Illinois with 14 points and Shaun Pruitt added 10. Paul Miller scored 18 points for Wichita State (3-1), which led for most of the second half after trailing by as many as 11 in the first. Miller also had five rebounds, one steal and was 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Kyle Wilson's layup with 1:24 left gave Wichita State a 54-53 lead before Carter's winning shot.

"We guarded our tails off all day," Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon said. "We got every stop we needed until the very end."

Wilson had 10 points for the Shockers, who shot just 35 percent from the field in the second half. McBride finished with eight points and hit a 3-pointer with 5:41 left that cut Wichita State's lead to one.
