Illini aren't alone in recruiting Grant eighth-grader
Larry Austin has drawn interest from Purdue, Kansas
CHAMPAIGN ? He?s only a 13-year-old eighth grader at Grant Middle School, but Larry Austin officially has his own address on the college basketball map.

When Austin played against Washington Middle School on Thursday, Illinois coach Bruce Weber sat in the stands, another sign that Austin?s growing reputation already has become noticed by college coaches. While there still might be a recruiting battle over where Austin plays high school basketball, college coaches are already interested in the 5-foot-11 guard.

?It was exciting when I saw him walking in the door,? Austin said. ?I still had to play my game the way I usually play it. I never thought this would happen.?

Although Weber also stopped to watch Springfield High sophomore Willie Wiley during a practice Thursday, the coach?s appearance at Austin?s game was the likely real reason for the trip. Weber?s recruiting strategy is to build relationships with players early, but Illinois isn?t the only program already spending time and resources on Austin.

Purdue assistant coach Paul Lusk is expected to attend Grant?s game against visiting Quincy today, and Kansas has requested Austin?s summer schedule.

?It?s really picking up a bit,? said Austin?s father, Larry Sr. ?Things have been going well over the last couple of months.?

Illinois keeping an eye on basketball recruit Larry Austin Jr.

CHAMPAIGN ?

Freshman year is just under way for Springfield Lanphier High School guard Larry Austin Jr., but he's already dealing with college basketball recruiting.

Austin, who played a game at Grant Middle School last year with Illinois coach Bruce Weber in the stands, will make an unofficial visit this weekend to Illinois, where he's likely to play in open gym before attending the Illinois-Southern Illinois football game.

While interest will blossom for the 14-year-old Austin with his high school career under way, "he's not given it much thought,'' said his father, Larry Sr. "He's concentrating on the adjustment to high school, mostly on academics and making sure he's in the right classes, doing things he needs to do in his classes.

"He just wants to enjoy his freshman year, and he's trying to make sure he has his books under control. It's a big step from middle school to high school.''

2014, PG, 6-1, 161 pounds
Austin is a tough competitive point guard who plays with swagger and has leadership ability. He attacks defenders on the break, where he is a threat to deliver the ball to an open teammate or score himself. Austin also has excellent court vision and can beat his defender off the dribble with a great burst of speed. He can also hit the open jumper to the arc when set, which looks to have improved since we last saw him and he must continue to build his conditioning. Austin can run the team and is an excellent finisher in heavy traffic for his size. Ohio State, Illinois, Xavier, Virginia and Tennessee are in the mix for Austin right now.

Quick Dish: 2014 PG Larry Austin adds second offer
Thursday, September 8, 2011
Written By: Drew Brucker

Yesterday turned out to to be quite the day for Larry Austin Jr., a sophomore guard out of Lamphier HS (IL). It's no secret that Austin has quite the familiarity with the University of Illinois and late last night, Larry received an offer courtesy of the Illini. This offer serves as Austin's second offer currently with the previous offer coming by way of Bradley.

Many thought Austin may "take the bait" so-to-speak and commit instantly. That turned out to not be the case, at least not yet.

One of my close sources told me that Austin received the offer by phone (ala: Jerrance Howard). Austin commented on the offer by saying he wasn't going to commit and was planning on taking his time with the process while identifying other interested programs as well. Larry provided a decision timeline somewhere between his junior and senior years.

Illinois has had the inside-track on a guy like Austin but hoped to string him along while they could further analyze his play at the point guard position. However, with Larry's recent play with Team USA this summer and other schools getting in line, the Illini felt like they had to move quickly.

As of late, Austin is heating up on the recruiting trail for many schools and Illinois probably felt the urgency. While Larry is planning to visit the Illinois campus on the 17th for the Illinois-Arizona State football game, other schools have also thrown their names in the mix. Austin also plans to visit Xavier and Ohio State before the conclusion on this month. Other schools tied to Austin include Kansas and Kentucky where Austin will likely visit in the next month or two.

Larry Austin - 6-foot-1, PG, Springfield (Ill.) Lanphier, 2014: The top pure point guard in Chicago on Sunday was the sophomore from Team DRose. Austin is a floor general with leadership skills who plays a fundamental and heady all-around game and really competes. He's a speedy transition playmaker with great first-step quickness and the leaping ability to score above the rim through fouls. While not being a great shooter at this point in his career, Austin can score off the bounce while also being skilled as a distributor when the defense helps. Also a very good defender, the four-star prospect is being heavily recruited by Missouri, Kentucky, Memphis, DePaul, Illinois and Ohio State.

Would like to see some renewed interest by the staff in this kid. Probably would be a good idea to sign two PGs in the '14 class with Scott being a SR, when they come in, and most of the other targets potential one-and-done candidates.
