Power forward
Clarksville, Tennessee
Northeast
AAU: Georgia Stars

Ht:6'8"
Wt:215 lbs
Class:2012 (High School)

Strengths:
Poythress is a terrific long armed athlete that does a great job running the floor and attacking the basket on the break and in the half court. He can hit the open three with time and space but he is at his best when getting to the rim where he can finish through contact. Poythress is an excellent rebounder on both ends mainly because he can get rebounds in and out of his area. He has great hands is also a good passer and ball handler. Defensively Poythress did a great job of challenging shots on and away from the ball.

Weaknesses:
Poythress must continue to work to hone his overall skill set in the areas of scoring with his back to the basket and moves off the bounce in order for this combination forward to become a full time small forward. As Poythress continues to add strength his game will continue to blossom.

Bottom Line:
Poythress is an athletic combination forward that is a potential match up problem. His number one asset is his ability to attack the basket. He is a great rebounder and excellent two position defender. His skills need to continue to be honed to be considered a full time small forward. He is a high level athlete without a doubt.

Alex Poythress

Thanks to class of 2012 power forward Alex Poythress (#25) for doing the interview with us. He is a 6?8, 215-pound big man who attends Northeast High School and plays AAU for the Georgia Stars. He?s being recruited by the top colleges across the country from Kentucky to Duke to local schools such as Tennessee.

Which schools are recruiting you the hardest?

Vandy, Memphis, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, UConn, Duke, Kentucky, Ohio State, Stanford and some more.

What are you looking for in a school?

I?m just trying to find the best fit for me. I like an up-tempo offense where the point guards run a lot.

What has been your favorite part of the recruiting process?

Having all of the coaches watching you is pretty cool. Getting all of the calls from the college coaches is pretty cool too and just talking to them about their program and stuff like that.

Who has helped you the most in the recruiting process?

Probably my mom, my high school coach and my dad. They just help me figure out who?s telling the truth and who?s not. They have my best interest at heart.

ALEX POYTHRESS
School: Northeast
Position: Forward
Class: Senior
Height: 6-foot-8
Last season?s stats: 22.3 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 3.1 bpg, 1.4 spg, 1.2 apg
Division I offers: 15

When Alex Poythress was in sixth grade, he got cut from his middle school basketball team.

His twin sister, Alexis, made the girls team, and some of the neighborhood kids teased him because she could beat him shooting in the driveway.

?I was like, ?Alexis, just let him win. Please let him win,?? said their mother, Regina. ?But she beat all the little boys in the neighborhood. Alex was so disappointed when he got cut. He cried and cried. His body grew before he could be coordinated and he was wearing a size 14 shoe back then.?

A lot has changed since then.

Poythress has grown into his 6-foot-8, 215-pound frame, and coaches rave about his athleticism. The Northeast senior has blossomed into one of the nation?s top prospects, earning offers from defending national champion Connecticut, Ohio State, Florida, Louisville and Texas as well as Vanderbilt and Tennessee.

?Maybe after the summer I might narrow my list (of schools) down,? Poythress said. ?I?m going to try (to make my decision) before the season, but I have no clue. I?m just hoping to find the best fit for me.?

What's Poythress thinking?

There's always a few guys in each class who are a challenge to pick their brain. Alex Poythress (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) is a tough guy to tie down. Vanderbilt and Florida have the most coach involvement when it comes to his recruitment but the list of suitors is long. You know Tennessee is making a pitch. Kentucky, Duke, Ohio State, Louisville, Connecticut and Texas are interested.

Poythress sits squarely on the fence of playing the small forward or power forward, but he wishes to be recruited as a small forward.

Free Rivals - Hoop Mountain: Top 10 performers

012 PF Alex Poythress, Georgia Stars: One of the most explosive players at the event, Poythress could not be contained by the Florida Rams. He was getting to the rim for dunks, knocking down three point shots, and attacking the offensive glass for easy buckets. He's a bit of "tweener" right now but he's got the ability to play either position successfully at the next level.

Poythress, who's been nearly unstoppable this week, averaging 16.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and four assists in four games, has offers from Memphis, Connecticut, Florida, Louisville, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas and Vanderbilt.

A Tennessee Class AAA Mr. Basketball finalist as a junior last season, the versatile Poythress confirmed Memphis is in the mix for his services, but added he's not close to narrowing his list. Poythess made an unofficial visit to Memphis last season, sitting behind the Tigers' bench during the East Carolina game.

"(Pastner's) a pretty good coach. He knows what he's doing," Poythress said.

Life for Alex Poythress hasn't exactly been "normal" since he stepped inside Northeast High School as a freshman three years ago.

While most students worry about what college they'll attend, Poythress won't have that problem.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound senior has attracted the attention of some of the larger Division I basketball programs across the country. And now one of the elite programs in the history of the college game has thrown its cards on the table.

The University of Kentucky offered the Northeast High product a scholarship.

"It's exciting," he said. "Anytime you get a call from a school as big as Kentucky, that makes you take notice."

Alex Poythress needs to be more consistent from game to game, but the 6-foot-8 power forward has shown to be a big-time talent playing with the Georgia Stars this summer and last night that talent was on full display. He is a tough kid who plays through injuries and goes hard when he steps on the court. He has major ability to get to the basket off the bounce and can really take advantage of slower, larger four men. He handles the ball well for his position and has superb hands. Poythress knows how to score the ball and can even step out and hit shot from beyond the arc. A quality defender who is also capable of playing the three if needed, Poythress is a smart player who understands the game. It would serve him well to be more vocal on the court and command the ball when he is not getting touches.

Poythress mentioned last night Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Florida, Memphis, Louisville, Alabama, Ohio State, Connecticut, Texas and Duke as the schools he is considering and he will be working with his family to narrow that done in the very near future.

As for when he will actually cut his list, Poythress said, ?After Nationals I?ll talk to my parents.?

His on the court performance last night impressed many and it led to the final school on his list to offer that had not previously.

?They offered last night,? Poythress told NBE via text this morning, confirming the reports of a Duke offer.

His list will include five schools and he does not know any of them for sure yet.

Poythress has taken visits to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Memphis thus far. He said he will take trips to the five finalists.

Location will not be a factor for Poythress, who does not have a commitment timetable. However, he said, ?Academics will be big.?

On who is recruiting him the hardest: ?Probably Kentucky, Memphis, Vanderbilt and Florida.?

I like

Saw him and Parker on ESPN the other night.
Kid is long and with good bounce. Kid is active too, He seemed to be every where on the court last night. Tipping balls, deflections, put backs, shooting from deep. As another poster pointed out this was their second game of the day and he still seemed to highly involved so that tells you about his motor.

Kid is a perfect Matta four and can play some three. He has 3-point range, but can score in the lane and in the post. Runs the floor can defend on the perimeter and in the post. Would absolutely love to land him and might be my #1 choice (tough call with Jefferson and Parker) for this class.

Alex Poythress Cuts His List to 5
by Scott Anderson
August 15th, 2011

It has been well documented that 2012 recruit Alex Poythress loved his visit to Kentucky this past week, and his revised list reflects that.

Dave Telep of ESPN.com is reporting he has cut his list to Kentucky, Duke, Vanderbilt, Memphis, and Florida.

Many think Poythress could be the 1st commit of the 2012 class for Kentucky, but everyone also thought Archie Goodwin would do the same....

His recent comments of saying Kentucky has been his favorite visit so far does sound very good and I am sure Coach Cal will be right in the mix to the end.
