Evaluation

April, 2010: This young big body post is tough to handle in the lane when he is motivated. Coleman is talented and powerful. He scores through contact with ease and does a good job of drawing fouls. Coleman power dunks drop off passes created by dribble penetration or on any clear path to the rim. He is an excellent area rebounder on both ends of the floor and has the strength to take the ball out of smaller post player hands. He scores with power drop steps and half hooks and must be blocked out because he is pretty good at rebounding and finishing his own misses. He looks to be in decent shape but must make conditioning a daily priority. He touch inside is good and he can simply ware down opponents with his constant banging. Coleman must learn to play with urgency at all times if he wants to be a special player in which he is very capable.

Best big man: One could not ignore the presence of 6-10, 290-pound DaJuan Coleman from Syracuse, N.Y. He has been compared to incoming Ohio State big man Jared Sullinger, and justifiably so. But he was still No. 2 to 6-9, 220-pound Kyle Wiltjer from Portland, Ore. Wiltjer will have to be careful where he chooses to play, as he is far down on both the speed and athleticism lists.

But he's got the hands of a pro around the basket, rarely losing a potential rebound he touches. He has every tool on offense, from the short-corner jumper to the jump hook in the lane to a power post-up. He's automatic with the high-low play. Wiltjer won't go get a blocked shot, but he'll block whatever comes to him. And while he has average speed now -- and will likely get slower as he gets bigger -- Wiltjer does have "big moment" speed where he will blow past a defender who has been lulled to sleep.

Coleman dominates Super Showcase
Rankin By Reggie Rankin
ESPN Recruiting

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The U-17 AAU Super Showcase is loaded with talent as travel teams descended upon the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex from all over the United States and Canada. Great performances were plentiful as the tournament was played on over 30 courts throughout the greater Orlando area, featuring intense games and energetic players, coaches and fans.

Here are a few players who impressed on the first day of pool play.

Standout players

DaJuan Coleman (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt)
2012, C, 6-8, 280 pounds | AAU Team: Albany City Rocks
The big fella was aggressive right from the start, repeatedly finishing plays with power moves from the low block, tip ins on the offensive glass and rebounding everything in his area. This was all en route to scoring 28 points against Team United. When Coleman was not scoring, he was drawing fouls. He used his massive size to make it almost impossible for the defense to keep him from having his way in the lane. Coleman also displayed the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim from the low wing and short corner, where he simply power-drove defenders by initiating contact. When Coleman is focused and in attack mode, it is hard to deny him success at the rim or on the glass.

DaJuan Coleman Says He?s Wide Open
Posted on Jul 26, 2010

On the eve of the AAU 17U Nationals in Orlando, Fla., DaJuan Coleman and his Albany City Rocks teammates weren?t cooped up in a condo in Florida.

No, City Rocks coach Jim Hart took them in an air-conditioned van to see the Indians play the Rays at Tropicana Field.

When the City Rocks take the floor for their first game at 10:40 Tuesday morning, you can rest assured he will draw a big crowd of high-profile college coaches.

The 6-foot-10, 280-pound Coleman says his list includes Syracuse, Ohio State, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Louisville, UConn, Florida and North Carolina.?

?I?m wide open,? he said by phone.

BuckeyeGrove.com - Orlando: Hood stands out

DaJuan Coleman - If his guards threw him the ball every possession, he might go for 40 each game. Coleman is simply a beast of a human being who continues to get better. Due to the amount of basketball he has played he isn't quite as explosive now as he was earlier in the summer, but he still has unique athleticism for a kid in the neighborhood of 275 pounds, and runs the floor as well as anyone. Beyond that he has a good skill level for a center off the dribble and is solid form the foul line.

I work near Dewitt a few times every month, it's only about 15-20 minutes away from The Dome, so it's likely going to be hard to pull him away from Syracuse. With any luck I'll catch a game or two of his this year..

Top basketball recruit Coleman letting the game come to him
By Jim Halley, USA TODAY

ORLANDO ? Defenders double- and triple-teamed Albany Rocks center DaJuan Coleman whenever the ball swung his way on offense Friday, so he concentrated on scoring off his teammates' missed shots and contributing in other ways.

Early in the AAU Junior Boys National Championships at ESPN's Wide World of Sports, Coleman found himself doubled after receiving a pass in the high post. He passed back to the perimeter, then stepped out to set a pick that knocked the defender nearly back to half court and saddled Coleman with a foul.

At times, he still looks like a basketball player who's trapped in a football player's body. At 6-8, 280 pounds, he's built like a tight end or a defensive end, the positions he played for the Jamesville-DeWitt (DeWitt, N.Y.) football team when he started on the varsity as a freshman. Though he gave up football after freshman year, the same skills that served him well on the gridiron, good footwork and good hands, are making him a hot commodity as a basketball player.

Coleman is considered the No. 2 player in the 2012 recruiting class by ESPNU and the No. 3 player in the class by Rivals.com.

"He's a great kid," said Albany Rocks coach Jim Hart. "He has such great footwork for someone his size and he's not spoiled. A lot of other guys would get frustrated when they weren't getting their touches, but he doesn't blame his teammates. DeJuan is going to have a long career. He takes care of himself and has a great attitude."

Coleman didn't play organized basketball until he was in the seventh grade and while football came naturally, he said he made himself into a basketball player by playing pickup ball.

"I wanted to be a point guard, but I kept getting bigger," Coleman said. "That's why I can still dribble. I fell in love with basketball and I quit liking football."

Coleman likes a six-pack of schools
Syracuse, N.Y., junior big man DaJuan Coleman has drawn a crowd of coaches this week.

The 6-8, 280-pound Coleman is a big-body player who is a load to handle inside. He plays for Albany City Rocks and has been one of the best Class of 2012 prospects this summer.

Coleman, who mentioned Syracuse, UK, U of L, Ohio State, North Carolina and Connecticut, is listed as the No. 3 prospect by both major scouting services.

While he said he's unlikely to make any visits soon, Coleman talked about making a trip to both locals schools at some point.

"I just have to get my list narrowed down," Coleman said. "I don't want to make ant mistakes on my decision. Since I have not taken ant visits, I am still open but I want to get to know the coaches a little better."

Coleman's soft hands and footwork wow college coaches

DaJuan Coleman (Jamesville-DeWitt basketball) ? Forget about the Biblical story of David vs. Goliath. Anyone taking on the Red Rams this winter will need to prepare for Goliath?s big brother. Coleman, ranked in everyone?s national top five basketball recruits in the upcoming junior class, checks in at 6-foot-9 and 280 pounds.

He was the MaxPreps.com national basketball Sophomore of the Year in 2009-10.

What makes him problematic for opponents, however, is that Coleman hasn?t even figured out yet how to get the most out of his size. Rather, he has wowed observers in the past two seasons with graceful footwork and soft hands, attributes that helped him average 18 points a game as a sophomore.

A sprained ankle briefly derailed his AAU schedule, but Coleman has been a big attraction for scouts on the summer circuit and will almost certainly become the most recruited upstate big man of the last quarter century.

Coleman said recently his current list of potential suitors consists of Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia. You can be certain there are 25 other Division I coaches prepared to drop whatever they are doing to come watch Coleman try to lead J-D to its fourth straight New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A championship next March.

Well, even with Syracuse in his backyard, I definitely wouldn't rule out other schools on this one, because Syracuse continues to stockpile big men. They got a commitment from a top-10 big man in the '11 class today (Rakeem Christmas) and have the #1 center in the 2010 class (McD's AA) Fab Melo (it bears mentioning Melo is fairly raw so he will likely be around a while there). So I think even though the distance is short, all that competition/perceived competition for PT has to hurt the chances of Syracuse landing Mr. Coleman. I don't know if OSU has a great shot at him, but I don't think he's a Syracuse lock as other people might. Will Syracuse land a top-20 nationally ranked big man three years in a row? That's appears to be what they'd have to pull off in order to get Mr. Coleman.

DaJuan and his pops seem to share metabolic rates.
I think you're wrong (I had posted something similar so I edited it just now after looking up the facts). DaJuan is not related to Derrick Coleman. That's what the ESPN announcers said during the Boost Mobile game. Here's an article that says he frequently has to inform people that he is not related to Derrick Coleman:
DaJuan Coleman proves to be state Federation basketball tournament's main attraction

I also read that both of DaJuan's parents are under 6' tall.

Coleman played on the same team as Scott and Ross at the Boost Mobile game last weekend.
