Charlotte (NC) Mallard Creek HS

Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 265 lbs

Free Scout - Carolinas Trip: Day One

That is the home of North Carolina commitment Marquise Williams. I got a chance to watch him practice for a couple of hours and I was impressed by his leadership skills and attitude as much as anything else.

While it was fun to watch and evaluate him, I was there mainly to focus on the underclassmen. There is no question about who their top underclassman is and possibly their top overall prospect is right now, that is D.J. Humphries.

He is a 6-foot-5, 270 pound junior with long arms, great feet, nice balance, and he looked like one of the best at his position in 2012. Humphries was very impressive in practice and he looked like a future five-star to me. He has a long list of offers already and he is likely going to stay somewhere in the South to play college football.

In May, Mallard Creek offensive lineman D.J. Humphries attended a football camp at Virginia Tech and his life changed.

Humphries, who is 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds, was named the top offensive lineman at a camp that featured a strong field of top college prospects. ESPN?s recruiting website wrote that Humphries was one of the more advanced high school offensive linemen seen last summer at any grade and said he could be the nation?s top offensive tackle recruit in the class of 2012.

Rivals.com national analyst Mike Farrell agrees with that assessment, comparing Humphries to Xavier Nixon, a former Fayetteville Britt top 100 national recruit now playing at Florida.

Continued...

All are getting used to the heavy recruiting attention they're receiving. For Humphries, he?s gone from one offer - from Clemson - to more than 20 after attending the Virginia Tech camp.

He said that list of schools includes Clemson, Florida State, Louisiana State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

"I was getting some interest before," Humphries said, "but after I did that camp, it just went to a different level."

Humphries, 16, said he doesn't have a favorite or a short list. He said he does plan to graduate in December 2011 and enroll in college early.

Wow, this kid plays for a team in my old conference. Mallard Creek is a relatively new school (Opened in 2007), but they've been dominant, starting off 9-0 in 2008 before forfeiting their season, going 11-2 in 2009, and so far they are dominating and undefeated in 2010 and a favorite to win the title. Played against him last year... probably did my junior year as well. They have a senior QB in Marquise Williams who is committed to UNC, and several other players going D1... loaded program with a very short history.

This kid's an absolute monster... I played on the kickoff coverage team in addition to offense last, and he was so athletic that he was out there just blasting people. He was an absolute monster, he played SSE on defense against us in the playoffs and just dominated that side of the line, and on offense he opened holes practically a mile wide.

Rivals - The first five-stars: D.J. Humphries

3/17

D.J. Humphries, OT, Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek

Attributes: 6-5, 275, 4.92

Top schools: Offers from Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia Tech and others.

Analyst's take: "Humphries is an exceptional athlete for an offensive tackle with great footwork, agility, technique and athleticism. He gets out of his stance quickly, has a very polished pass protection set, a smooth kick-slide and he uses his arms well to keep defenders off balance. As a run blocker he comes off the ball low and strong, has good strength when he locks on and he can reach the second level to hit moving targets downfield." - Mike Farrell, Rivals.com

Why he's a five-star: "He may be the most athletic offensive lineman in the country. Humphries is a natural hip and knee bender and he has the feet to get downfield and make that extra block. You couple that with tremendous body structure making him the best pure left offensive tackle in the country." - Barry Every, Rivals.com

His coach says: "D.J. is so athletic for a player his size, he's about 6-6, 280 pounds now and he moves so well, gets downfield and he can hit linebackers as easily as defensive linemen. He hasn't given up a sack in two years and is the hardest worker I've ever been around. He does it all and has great God-given talent that he continues to improve with his work ethic. He's easily a five-star kid. " - Mallard Creek head coach Michael Palmieri

Odds and ends: Humphries played basketball until early in his high school career when he was convinced to play football as a defensive end. He then moved to tackle and now has emerged as one of the best players in the country. Humphries emerged at the NIKE Camp in Blacksburg last spring and protected the blindside of 2011 four-star quarterback Marquise Williams last year. Humphries father, also named D.J., played wide receiver at Presbyterian College and also played Arena League Football.

D.J. Humphries, OT, Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek

Humphries is an outstanding talent at offensive tackle. He has excellent feet and size and has been on the radar since early in his high school career. Humphries has more than 30 offers, but has a top three of Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina with the Gators in the lead. ?I just felt at home when I visited Florida,? he recently said. Should he end up at UF, it would continue a tradition of the Gators snatching top offensive line talent out of the Tar Heel State in the tradition of Carl Johnson (Class of 2006) and Xavier Nixon (Class of 2009).
