College coaches have already begun to whisper about a sophomore quarterback from North Carolina by the name of Tino Sunseri. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, from Weddington High in Matthews has been the starting signal-caller since he was a freshman. Sunseri is putting up very good numbers in ’05 and now the mail is starting to roll in.

“I’m getting mail from North Carolina, Penn State and LSU the most,” Tino Sunseri said.

“I’ve been down to LSU for camp and I really liked it down there. I learned a lot from coach Jimbo (Fisher).

“The schools I like the most are Texas, Michigan, Florida, Ohio State, Penn State and LSU. I’m hoping to get to some camps next summer. Those schools are all sending mail as well.”

Sunseri is an outstanding dual-threat quarterback with a live arm and excellent quickness. So far in 2005, Tino has thrown for 700 yards and he’s rushed for 325 yards. Weddington has a 4-2 record on the season, losing last weekend to powerhouse Independence.

Sunseri also letters in basketball, where he can slam dunk, and baseball. He’s the son of a couple of University of Pittsburgh athletes. Sal Sunseri was an All-American linebacker for Pitt and he’s currently the defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers.

Before taking his post at Carolina, Coach Sal was known as one of the top college football recruiters in the country at Michigan State and LSU.

Tino’s mother, Roxanne, was an all-conference gymnast at Pitt. To say the gene pool is strong in the Sunseri household would be an understatement.

We asked Tino what kind of advice his father has given him about playing the game of football.

“My dad just tells me to keep a level head,” Sunseri explained. “My dad would always tell me to stay inside myself and do the best job I can. He told me to always play the next play. Not to worry too much about what I can’t control

“He shows me different stuff in our living room. He would always show me different things that I can use in games and what to look for. It’s definitely been a big help having a father who’s been around the game his entire life.”

With Sal Sunseri being an All-American linebacker for a National Championship Pitt squad that included the likes of Dan Marino, how did Tino end up playing quarterback?

“I always had the strongest arm,” Tino said. “I started playing flag football in grade school and I had the strongest arm so I was the quarterback. I’ve been a quarterback for as long as I can remember.”

Recruiting is evolving and college recruiters are getting an earlier start on recruiting underclassmen every year. Tino Sunseri already has several schools writing personal hand-written letters inviting him to camp. He’s also starting to receive invites to several combines that are held in the spring and summer.

Tino Sunseri is definitely a name to remember. He’s a fine dual-threat quarterback hat has the athleticism at 6-1 to dunk a basketball. With that kind of explosion, Tino could end up playing on the defensive side of the ball in college, just like his dad.

It has to be Pittsburgh Central Catholic. It's the football power of the city and former home to Dan Marino, Marc Bulger and Steve Breaston.

It's also very close to the Pitt Campus.

As big a name as Sunseri is at Pitt, is has to be PCC.

USC Interested In Pennsylvania QB

By Phil Kornblut
USC is among the schools showing early interest in QB Tino Sunseri (6-1 195) of Pittsburgh. Florida State, LSU, Nebraska, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State and Pittsburgh also have shown interest according to his coach Terry Totten. Sunseri is the son of Carolina Panthers assistant coach Sal Sunseri. Last season he passed for 1800 yards and 17 touchdowns. "He's a very accurate passer," Totten said. "He has flawless form. He throws a really tight, really good ball. He was the most accurate passer at the Elite 11 camp last summer." Sunseri has camped at USC in the past. "I went down to their one day session over the summer and threw for coach Spurrier," Sunseri said. "My dad is good friends with coach Lawing. They coached together at Michigan State. I'm also good friends with Stephen Garcia." Sunseri said he's wide open and won't decide on summer camps until he has a chance to throw in front of some coaches and see who's really interested.

Sunseri Checks Out Local Attraction

By Phil Kornblut
QB Tino Sunseri (6-2 200) of Pittsburgh Sunday made the short ride over to the University of Pittsburgh campus for an unofficial visit to watch a spring practice. "Everything went well," he said. "I'll probably get an offer from there next time I visit there. I'm going to Florida State this weekend. I'm hoping to get an offer from coach Bowden." Sunseri said USC also continues to show real interest. "Two of their coaches are planning to come up here to see me in April," he said. "And one of their assistants is going to watch me throw at the Elite 11 camp at Georgia Tech April 20th. They want to see me in person again and see me throw. I'm hopeful they will like what they see." The Gamecocks got a look at Sunseri in their camp last summer. Sunseri has not been offered. He says his top five are USC, Alabama, Florida State, Tennessee and Nebraska. He is also hearing from Ohio State and Louisville.

Rivals $

Film.

My Take: When I watched this one I saw a kid that obviously loves football. Tino is more polished than your average HS QB, has an above average arm, touch, etc....however, I see a kid near his ceiling. I don't see much room for growth. I'm not taking away from the kid's talent...its there...but I don't see him as a top tier recruit.

Is it fair to say that where Tino ends up receiving offers from hinges in large part on his Senior season?

Who knows, it might be somewhere very different from the schools in which he presently expresses interest.
