Everyone talks about the question marks on the D-line, but our safety play is just as questionable for me. There is a reason Jenkins had to play safety on passing downs.

This one should be as big of a no-brainer as the DL comparison.

I thought Coleman and Russell played quite well. Coleman was a true soph with some garbage time playing experience at corner the previous year and Russell was also a soph with only a few noteworthy games of experience. When they're that young and inexperienced it's a little unfair to expect much more than they did.

That said, Doss wins it by himself. Nickey is the cherry on top. Coleman and Russell may very well be All-American candidates if they stick together their senior years but you have to be a lunatic to vote for them in this poll.

Almost as easy as the DL pick. 02, hands down. Doss was one of the all time greats, and the heart and soul of the team. IMO, he accepted a slight change in his role for 02 that affected his stats a little, but helped the team win. Nickey was solid. He had a lot of near misses that could have boosted his rep. For instance in the Fiesta, if he makes the sack on the FS blitz, The MIA WR doesn't beat Doss for a TD, MIA probably punts (can't recall the down or yardage right now), and Dorsey leaves the game due to menstrual cramps. Allen and Salley proved to be starters in waiting. Allen had a great 02 season with some key INTs (UM). Salley, IMO, was not great at coverage, but he could lay the wood.

I'm hoping that Anderson plays in 08 like he did in 06 before the injury. He has the skills to be an elite college safety, he just needs to hang on to those INTs. Coleman needs to show in games what he does in practice. He's a good hard nosed player, but it seems like he dominates scrimmages, and sometimes disappears in games. I hope he has a breakout year, I really like that kid. Chekwa could be considered a safety, since he plays Nickel. He adds some strength in coverage. Jamario just needs to be consistent.

Really, you could pair Doss with any safety from the last 30 years and it would be one of the best safety corps of all time.

I'm not sure any '08 S has reached Nickey's level of consistent play, let alone the game-changing Allen and three-time consensus AA Doss. However, unlike the DL comparison (which is simply in another galaxy imo), I like the upside of our safeties to trend upward this season. It will be hard to be as special as Doss & clutch as Allen, but 21 & 4 can develop into a special bunch in their own right.

I imagine Allen will remain the greatest nickel back we'll ever see under Tressel, in terms of production for 1 season. INT sealing Cincy win, INT sealing UM win, blowing out pro-bowler McGahee's knee (unfortunate, but huge), etc. 03 wasn't bad either, stonewalling McLendon.

Presuming they all got together and bought a Juggs machine, right?
