The point is that it reflects Matta's lack of awareness of the need for rest. He's not only unwilling to rest his players during the game, he won't even let them rest when the game is out of reach!
Come tournament time he'll wish he'd have taken advantage of those minutes here and there.
They may not look tired tonight, but there's a cumulative effect of playing this many games with a bench of 1.5 players. Hopefully that cumulative effect won't kick in during the NCAA tournament.
Matta just doesn't seem willing to allow players like Sibert to develop so they can be part of the rotation. It's as if he plays every game like it's the National Championship.
Sometimes you have to sit your good players and chalk it up to helping them play better when they ARE in there.
I just don't think you can revolve your offense around a guy who weighs 280 pounds and give him as much rest as Sullinger gets. If Sullinger isn't fresh and can't fight for position in the paint, the offense starts to stall.
I think you have to wonder about the effect of having only one (or one and a half) bench player over the course of about 20 games. Come tournament time this team could fall flat on its face. Matta made the same mistake last year in the tournament.
I think Matta really needs to start spelling Sullinger with Lauderdale for short stretches. This offense needs to revolve around a physically fresh Sullinger.
Matta is starting to scare me with how much he relies on Craft and the starters other than Lauderdale. It's like last year when the tournament started and the bench disappeared. I don't think that's productive.
The most unreal one was when the redheaded guy faked a pass and then hit a three somewhat off-balance with about two minutes left. That would've been a key miss had we gotten the rebound and scored. But no, they make another fluke three.
