I can't tell you how far off base this is. If you look at crime maps in New Orleans, you'll see that most crime actually occurs in the French quarter. Most of this is petty theft and various crimes fueled by alcohol. That said, I've never felt unsafe in the quarter. Locals would scoff at anyone...
