Exactly, the Diebler hire was the AD waving the white flag that they are ok with mediocrity in non football sports. I still care but it's hard to be enthusiastic with that message
I think there has to be a real concern for next year. Yea Thompson is a very high level HS recruit but even if he performs at a high level that won't be enough to carry the whole team. Replacing Bruce is going to be a near impossible task unless they get lucky.
Other guys who have eligibility...
I think the lack of NIL support for non football programs reflects the Athletic Departments relative lack of care for non football programs.
If Michigan had gone a Diebler type route they would not be having the same success.
Not just fan enthusiasm any enthusiasm anywhere. The AD proved they have zero care about the basketball program when they just handed the Keys to Diebler. You expect pockets to open when the AD doesn't even give a crap? You still avoid the question and can't give any real defense to the lazy hire.
If you aren't going to get high level NIL then you need a coach who can work well enough and actually with the talent he can get. Diebler so far has not shown that he is that guy. The team is constantly all out of whack on the court with no real direction which is a sign of bad coaching.
I...
If Diebler were showing he was a good coach but struggling cause of severe lack of talent it would be one thing but that is not the case
To this point he's only shown he is way in over his head as a head coach at a major program. The team constantly looks under prepared and like they have no...
Some people want to blame NIL alone but the NIL problem is absolutely created by the lack of care in non football sports by the Athletic Department. A serious hoops program doesn't just hand the keys to the assistant of the former failed coach.
I'm not expecting annual national title runs. But I think multiple year tournament droughts are not acceptable. We should be able to at least make the tournament more often than not. The fact that people are ok with potentially 4 tournamentless years before even considering firing Diebler speaks...
Maybe a head coach hire that actually inspired even just some enthusiasm would get some more NIL rolling into the program. I'd argue the athletic department has created the poor conditions for everything but football.
I think Diebler was cheap and he was right there so they didn't have to...
To the Diebler defenders how much time is "enough time"? Are you still ok with him if he misses the tournament again next year?
What about the conclusion of this year? They could realistically lose every remaining game. If the only win down the stretch is against Ped State are you ok with that?
Next year IMO might be ugly. Diebler has not shown that he can get higher level players in the portal. Thompson is a high level HS recruit but even if he plays at an elite level that won't be hear enough to carry the team
Ill disclose once against that Michigan is obviously more talented but there's zero excuse for them getting this many wide open uncontested shots. Just the result of a poorly coached team.
