In my mind Madaris and Caleb are different types of players...as someone else stated, OSU is probably connecting with Madaris because they are concerned about one of the other WR recruits.
As satisfying and cathartic as firing Gene would be for all of us...he does know where the skeletons are buried, and the last firing of a major athletic department official (Jim O'Brien) did not work out too well for OSU. I am sure his departure is being "worked out."
I think what Thad meant was that the schedule was preventing them from having as much practice as they typically would have---which, in turn, is making it more difficult for Ross to get up to speed.
The short story regarding Bobby D was that it was one area where JT actually was being proactive and the athletic department staff undermined all that (IMHO).

I imagine Muschamp and Fisher (and Weis, and Dick LeBeau, and Wade Phillips, etc) basically fit that bill. Sometimes great coordinators are not great head coaches, and I'm not sure that Ohio State is the type of program that would take that risk.

Whether he has the title or not is besides the point. The question is whether we are comfortable hiring someone who has not had success as a head coach at another school.
