I would rather just have eight conferences each with eight teams, only conference champions go to the playoffs. Everyone else can play in the Carquest/Camping World/Dukes/Whatever bowl.
Drop the automatic bids, keep the first round home games. Top eight ranked teams get in. I think one big problem this year was unbalanced conference schedules. Too many teams that didn’t play each other ending the year with only two losses.
