Define "mediocre." There are plenty of programs that wish they had a coach as "mediocre" as a guy who makes the Dance every season and wins a game more often than not when there. During Holtmann's time at OSU, OSU is one of 3 high major programs with 20 win seasons each of those years.
I...
Sorry, I wasn't referring to you earlier, I was talking about the expectations of a core of the fanbase who think it should be easy to replicate Thad's best years or don't understand why OSU basketball can't be as dominant as OSU football.
It's fine to have higher expectations. Holtmann has had...
Beyond that, so many of our fans can't seem to grasp the concept of modern basketball parity. Even the elite basketball programs aren't as remotely dominant as the elite football programs.
My only issue there is these 2022 guys aren't necessarily one-and-done, instant impact guys. But they could be really good as sophomores and beyond. And if we fire Holtmann after their freshmen season, pretty likely they will be really good not-freshmen at other schools.
So hopefully we'd be...
As in if Holtmann doesn't win the B1G or make the S16, he's out?
To me it's 2023-2024. 2022 class with a season under their belts, add in GW3. Close to the end of Holtmann's contract. Doubt Gene blows it all up any sooner than that unless we really stink next season and some A+ candidate pops up.
I like Holtmann but was thinking all the same things this afternoon. He is in the unenviable position of following arguably the best basketball coach OSU has ever had. A lot of our fans have football perspective and simply don't understand why OSU can't win the conference and make Final Fours...
Does Juwan know that kid or something? Why is that even happening with Juwan and not the Tennessee coaches? Did Juwan see the cameras nearby and grab the kid? Sorry, excuse my cynicism.
Anyways, I hope that tweet was sarcastic but there has been a lot of genuine commentary the past day or so...
Definitely one of my biggest pet peeves when a very talented team for a program I dislike plays like trash all season, squeaks into the Dance, and then decides "hey let's try now."
Yeah, but I've watched them a few times this season and they looked like a legit team. They did not play smart against St. Peter's but also St. Peter's really left it all on the floor, every one of their guys. A few of UK's guys weren't giving nearly as much, especially defensively.
I just still can't get over the draw scUM was handed. When CBS tweeted that an "upset was brewin'" when scUM caught up with CSU, I rolled my eyes so hard I think I sprained something.
This is a stupid good match-up for scUM, who shouldn't even be in the Tournament.
Yes, I am peeved! I hope Colorado State can execute justice where the committee did not.
They got a gift wrapped match up in the first game (when they really, really should have been one of the play-ins, at best). They have like a 70% chance of winning, way better odds than we have in our game despite being seeded 4 spots higher than them.
Extremely annoying!
I like Holtmann. Seems like a good guy. Track record indicates an above average coach. OSU is not paying T10 or T15 basketball coach money, they are paying T25ish, and on the whole that's about what they're getting.
He has had terrible luck at OSU--with this season really taking the cake--but...
I think Holtmann is a good coach. He's bet a little too hard on injury prone players and he is paying for it, even though we are still a Tournament team and always have been under him.
We're never going to be great under him unless the defensive efficiency improves. That was Holtmann's thing...
Gonna be a close game. Always difficult to beat a conference foe twice or more in one season (but don't tell Tony Carr that), especially if the second game is the other team's last regular season chance to secure a Tourney spot.
Hope our guys figure out a way to come out on top.
