People to Punch, Pet Peeves, and General Vexations (mega-merge)

Came home from work the other day and there was a group of kids across the street in the park under a big shady tree that kids like to park under and hang out. I heard them yelling but didn't pay much attention as kids are always yelling. Came home today and they were there again and the yelling started. This time I heard words like "old", "ugly car" and a few other assorted insults and realized that they were yelling at me. I'd never seen these kids before and I don't know where they came from but this is the first time in 27 years living here that something like this has happened. Back in the old days this would have got them an ass whooping and a walk to their houses where they'd have gotten another one but I realized, these kids don't respect adults and apparently no adult has ever demanded their respect. I looked and one had his phone out recording so they were looking for trouble. They looked between 10-12. I decided to ignore them and went in the house. I don't spend much time around kids this young, is this normal nowadays?

Unfortunately this is more normal than in the past but not indicative of that age group as a whole.

What makes me sad is thinking how this is what our society has evolved to
Next time try this:

They're looking for a reaction from you (or the next guy or the next guy) so they can get something that goes viral. Spend some time on the shitty parts of Youtube and you'll find a bunch of garbage where people are yelling or wanting to fight. I don't think most of those were unprovoked. Not that the fighting is okay, but the videos never seem to show how the fight was started.

As far as "normal", I think Thump is right. This is becoming more normal, but it is far from "normal". My kids are 15 and 11. The 15-year-old would think fishing for a reaction is something only "dumb teenagers" would do. He doesn't watch those videos and seems to have no interest in them. The 11-year-old might watch those videos, but she'd have no desire to participate in making one. She's as shy as a... well... something shy. I dropped her off at a friend's house yesterday, and she wouldn't knock on the door.. she was too shy. She waited until the dog noticed her and started barking.

I think both kids know that if I found out they were making videos like that, or are otherwise being little shits, I'd have a fun time coming up with a punishment. And I'd be the only one having fun with it.

I just hope they don't catch my wife, she give them what they want and will probably call the police, make a scene and make us a target for vandalism
