VISTA, Calif. (AP) -- University of San Diego football coach Jim Harbaugh pleaded innocent Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.
Harbaugh's plea was telephoned to court officials by San Diego-based attorney Brian McCarthy, a technique allowed in misdemeanor cases.
Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback, was stopped early on Oct. 30 in Encinitas after allegedly running a stop sign. According to court documents, Harbaugh refused to take a field sobriety test after he was pulled over.
Harbaugh recently completed his second year at USD, leading the Toreros to a school-best 11-1 record, the Pioneer Football League championship. Judge Aaron Katz scheduled a Jan. 12 readiness conference and a Feb. 16 trial date.
