Why do we have such a bad reputation?

I have posted a few "congrats on a great season and good luck"-type messages on ND boards. Each time, I have received responses from Domers saying that it is so rare to see class from Buckeye fans. My brother is an Northwestern grad who regularly attends games, and he insists OSU fans are the most obnoxious.

I would truly like to think we are better than our reputation. But I hate to say that there might be something to all the bad press we get. Comments?

northwestern fans have never had anything to be obnoxious about... and would naturally hate OSU (notice how UM fans seem to be more passionate in their hatred of OSU now that they are often on the losing end). Notice how cryami is no longer the focal point of hatred from many buckeye fans b/c they are now irrelevant.

there are more OSU fans than any fanbase right now, save maybe Texas and USC. Therefore, there will be even more idiots due to sheer volume. Flamers are often what stick with people after reading posts from another fanbase.

Well said. All it takes is one moronic Buckeye fan to venture on to another school's message board and the reputation for OSU is shot to hell. The law of numbers says that there will simply be more morons supporting OSU than other schools, so it all makes perfect sense.

you're assuming I do not do so regularly...

I worded that incorrectly, perhaps. NW fans probably do not hate OSU fans like UM/PSU/Wisky fans might...

however considering their elite academics, clean cut coach, and lack of success, I can see a natural holier-than-thou attitude towards OSU ("katzenmoyer academics", tressel "scandals", tons of success...).

The only thing I can add is that we have an extremely regional fanbase. When people surrounded by people that all think the same, they tend to succumb to groupthink. Perhaps that causes our fans to not blend in as well in other parts of the country because of this?

Also, Buckeye football is pretty much a religion so we may tend to demonize fans of other teams?

Or maybe it's just because the other fans are sick of seeing their teams lose excruciatingly close games to us!! :tongue2:

Maybe I'm on chips as well, well yes I am. I figured you saw the "ND" as being "NW"

In the national scope of thing, the fact that we fired Earle Bruce and John Cooper has given us a blackeye-regardless of the correctness of both decisions-yes on Coop, no on Bruce, but that's another discussion, combined w/ the NFL factory rep Cooper developed, a lot of fans nationally are going to view OSU like we view FSU, Miami, USC,etc. I agree w/ Incognito when he says this dislike is more of a national thing, than a rest of the Big 10 thing-although Wisconsin hates us w/ white hot passion, according to a couple of Badger people I have spoken with.

My take: I tend to recall the campus inferno of '02 after OSU beat Michigan to go to the Fiesta Bowl to add to a list. Ever since then, that's what people outside of Buckeye Country have commented to me about. Making comments like we're a bunch of savages with nothing better to do than flip cars, set couches on fire & break glass.
The people that rioted, set shit on fire etc etc are in fact idiots & it's sad that their actions reflected on the university as a whole. There's no excuse for the treatment that Texas fans recieved this year either. Kids are different these days. I don't understand what happened to respect. It's sad.

On the flip side... me personally... I think people are jealous of us...! Our team, our players, our coaches, our school records..... etc
They wanna be like us but they can't!! lol We're the best!!!!!!!!!
:oh::io:

great thread

In the mainstream media tOSU is in Hicktown. This and a few moronic koolaid drinking fans on message boards.e-mailng crap to our own players..writers etc. gives us a bad rep. Without the MC affair I think JT was on track to improve tOSU's rep, and still think that will happen barring idiot fans or another off-field incident.
