He's back and better than ever!
  • So I went to work Yesterday. Got a call from My district Manager telling Me she needed to Meet with Me around three o'clock. The meeting I was told that I have three options with My job. a) stay a manager but move to wisconsin b) take a demotion to stay in columbus. or c) end my career with this company and take a 2 week severence package which would be two weeks pay.

I have until Weds to make the choice.

    Happy Holidays :)

Man, that has to be the pits. Even more so considering the time of year. Not that anytime would be good. How much of a financial impact would you be under if you stayed and accepted the demotion? If it's significant I would have to seriously consider the option of moving to Wisconsin. I hope it all works out for you my friend.

If you have to move to Milwaukee - you will love it there. Madison is also a very nice place to "live"... I know the UW fans are nuts...

Demotions rarely end up well I would think. You would have feelings of anger moving forward if you stayed with the company and took the demotion.

Time to update the resume either way... good luck.

I would guess you probably have lots to weigh with the decision.

Is it a company you want to continue to work for?
Will this move be a temporary one or will you need to learn to love cheese and brats?
Will it provide any advantage for future promotions?
Are you in a field you could easily find a comparable position in Columbus?
Will the pay be the same?
Is there a family that has to be considered with the move or is just you?
    Where in Wisconsin?

Good luck with the decision. I don't think Wisconsin is a terrible place to live, if you live near Madison, but it sure is not Columbus.

Man- As much as I've enjoyed Madtown... and Milwaukee for that matter... (talk about a city with great happy hour specials)-- who the hell wants to move there in the dead of winter?

Anyway... as much as you might be pissed... I take the demotion to ensure cash flow and start shopping for a job immediately... but that's just me...

I could see moving to Wisconsin for a PROMOTION... but... if you make that move... you've already got kind of a grip on how they operate... what's next... "Move to Tulsa or you're canned" Helena? El Paso? Yellow Knife? Calcutta? Kiev? I just don't see staying with a Company that uses job security as a motivator to move you where they want you. (Unless this was understood going in... which it doesn't sound like it was)

Fuck that place man... do what you need to to get by on the $ and get out.

About 8 degrees warmer and rougly an extra couple of inches of snow each month. Although summer weather is pretty even.

BTW - the summers in Milwaukee are like no other. I've lived in Chicago as well and THEY don't even compare to summer fun in Milwaukee.

I'm guessing the move to Wisconsin is out since I know you want to switch careers and get into teaching. With that being the case I think I would agree with AKAK and take the demotion in order to keep a steady cash flow, but begin looking for a new job immediately.

Call me this evening if you need to talk about it.

    buckeyefool,

I agree that you should take the demotion and start job shopping immediately. They probably assume that's what you will do anyways.

Also, look for a different line of work. Doesn't seem to me that you've had the best luck in the food service industry. Besides there's no fucking loyalty there anyways it sounds like.

The move was pretty much decided out about 2 seconds after it was presented to me. it's between 2 and 3. If I do 2, stay with teh company in a demoted role I will get paid 11 dollars an hour but no guarentte as to what hours I will get, option 3 is take the package and claim unemployment after that.

One thing is for sure is one I have already started sending my resume out, two that I will decide when I will be working not them, and three, fuck loyalty, I'll be loyal to My freinds and family and beyond that it's all about what gets Me ahead in life and nothing else.

OK. My experience with the job market is limited, so take this as you will...

loyalty is underrated. I had a job with Abbot Labs for a while, and they are HUGE on loyalty... I saw them bend over backwards to keep people happy and working there. They'll hire husbands/wives just to keep everyone in the same town and employed. They are great with promotions in-house (and finding the #2/3 candidates promotions or sideways moves to keep everything copacetic, if needed). They don't waste talent, and they are eating the competetion alive because of it (while I was there, they BOUGHT BASF's chemical division). I know you don't always have control over where you work, but don't underestimate the value of a compalny that looks out for its own.

Vpr - that is the exception, nowadays, not the rule. Oh, how I wish...but anymore, nobody gives a fuck about loyalty. At my last job, the company was sold, and the new owners immediately fired 60% of the staff. I was not one of them, yet the new owners seemed to think the remaining employees could handle the workload. Some of us "saw the light", and warned everyone else that the end was nigh, and the only reason we were still there was for damage control until they figured out what they were going to do with us. This "rumor" got to the new owners, who held a meeting and swore that "there was no other shoe", and we were all guaranteed jobs. Three months (to the day) later, we were all fired - every single one of us. So much for loyalty. Or even honesty.

    Other things to consider:

Will you have bene's if you stay (insurance: health, life, accident, disability, etc... retirement: defined benefit or defined contribution, also if you leave can you roll anything into another plan or IRA?? IE what is your vest schedule, and if you stay a while longer will a significant portion "vest" to you?... any other plans: stock purchase plan, stock option plan, deffered comp plans, profit sharing plans, etc... also, if you stay might you qualify for a bonus anytime soon?)

Two weeks pay isn't much, and if you can help it, stay out of the unemployment lines... usually better to change jobs without a lapse of work.

Do you like your current company? If so, might need to bite the bullet and stay... if not, I'd say take the demotion and start to shop for another job...

Not knowing the full situation I'd go with option B then A then C...
