I’m old enough to remember that time when some thought it was genius to place Meyer on administrative leave. Outside of Meyer’s performance at B1G Media Days, that decision (to put Meyer on leave) has been the catalyst for all the bad press since that time. Total clusterfuck by Ohio State.

You don’t put your coach on leave unless you’re firing him. That’s the only result the media was going to accept from that point forward. And they were never going to fire him. All they did was damage him, the Program, and the university in the process.

At this point, everyone needs to just shut up because it’s going to be a year before this issue is behind us. Opposing fans will dig at it for a while but it’ll go away eventually.

Yes, this is what I believe. I think it would have been much better for the University and definitely the athletic department if they had done just that. Unless a major donor was threatening to pull support if they didn't say something publicly, they should have just let a few media outlets run some stories and wait for the next news cycle. Some firm "no comments" at media days and not near as much is said. There would be plenty of public and press bad mouthing Ohio State over it. I'm pretty sure those same people are bad mouthing Ohio State now.

This thing has exponentially gotten worse every time Ohio State has collectively opened it's mouth. Do an investigation? Absolutely, there were serious questions to be answered, but do it internally and quietly. Suspend or fire the coach? Sure, if you have a cause to, but don't talk about until he's on his way out the door. I think a big portion of Ohio State's "black eye" is self inflected.

But that's just like, my opinion man.
What should've happened after Media Day: Gene Smith should've issued a statement that Urban's comments were about the false reporting by Brett McMurphy that there was a felony arrest of Zach Smith in 2015. Announce that he learned of the 2015 incident before Urban did and that he was the one who informed the coach. Title IX was informed and there was no concealment by Urban of anything regarding domestic violence. "Out of respect for the privacy of Zach and Courtney Smith we will have no further comment on the matter."

Done. This whole mess could've been easily avoided if we had any kind of competent leadership.

Here's what I found interesting from that article (with my emphasis added):

So basically, Urban was suspended not for covering up domestic violence (media), not for failing to report to compliance (report), but for creating "needless controversy" by "botching" the answer to a question at Big Ten media day. Sounds about right.

So now Drake will be suspended for 3mo for botching how these findings were handled and packaged to media?
What a clusterfuck.
